The HBCU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Collaborative will be a cohort of 15 HBCUs (both private and public) that are committed to participating in a multi-year collaboration that will foster innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship on their respective campuses.

Selected universities will have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative community.

This cohort of HBCUs will be able to access current and future funding opportunities that will be available only to those universities that commit to participate in this unique collaborative.

This collaborative will build off of the momentum that was established by the UNCF lead 2013 HBCU Innovation Summit that was held at Stanford University.

Collaborative seeks to increase innovation and entrepreneurship across disciplines (i.e., Agriculture, Business, Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology, etc.) in order to build an innovation ecosystem.

Ecosystem will include HBCUs (administrators, students and faculty), federal agencies, associations and private industries.

The institutions that are selected to participate in the HBCU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Collaborative will kick off their participation at the 2014 Symposium in conjunction with OPEN 2014-the NCIIA’s 18th Annual Conference– that will be held in San Jose, California March 21-22.

This pre-conference symposium is funded by the Lemelson Foundation and is being hosted jointly by the APLU, the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA), the United Negro College Fund, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Several partnering organizations will also be a part of working with us on this initiative.

Develop innovation and entrepreneurship strategic plan for the participating HBCUS.

Create campus-wide courses and extracurricular programs at HBCUS to ensure that students and faculty can participate in the commercialization of funded research by moving ideas out of the lab and classroom and into the marketplace.

Develop HBCU students to enhance the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem on their campuses.

Collaborative Objectives

Build relationships between participating institutions and partners (associations, federal agencies and private industry, etc.) to build an innovation ecosystem in mutually beneficial areas (.i.e. energy, agriculture, computer science, etc.).

Increase metrics that show improvements in innovation, entrepreneurship, commercialization, public-private partnerships at participating HBCUS (e.g., intellectual property, faculty and student start-ups, licensures, etc.).

Develop multi-campus pilot projects that will drive economic development, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization at HBCUs.

REQUIREMENTS

Participating HBCUs must establish teams that are composed of at least two (2) faculty members, one (1) student and, one (1) administrator to participate in this collaborative.

Universities will need to identify innovative and entrepreneurial:

Administrators

faculty (particularly those with significant research funding, licensures or intellectual property)

students (particularly those undergraduate or graduate students that are already participating in research, tech transfer, intellectual property efforts or other entrepreneurship efforts.

Requirements

Institutions selected to participate must make a multi-year commitment to participate in this collaborative and must establish one senior-level administrator to serve as the lead contact (who may or may not be the administrator who participates on the team).

All HBCU team members must be able to attend the entire HBCU Innovation and Entrepreneurship Collaborative 2014 Symposium Activities from March 19-23, 2014 (No exceptions will be made).

Institutional teams will also be required to submit a strategic plan to increase innovation and entrepreneurship on their campus.

Institutions that are selected to participate will receive funding for (2) faculty members and (1) student to attend the Symposium

The symposium builds from the UNCF led 2013 HBCU Innovation Summit that was held at Stanford University.

The 2014 Symposium will bring institutional teams (students, faculty and administrators) together to learn the essential components needed to build an innovation ecosystem. (see Draft Agenda)

Students will participate in the University Innovation Fellows Program.

All Participants will attend NCIIA Conference.

Institutional Teams and partners will gather to generate and present ideas for collaboration and partnerships.
