Dear Colleagues, We offer to your attention the 34rd volume of the Informational

Materials on the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which includes two volumes. This publication has been prepared by the EARAZA Zoo Informational Center (ZIC) based on the results of the analysis of the data provided by zoological institutions of the region.

The volume contains data on 115 collections of regional zoos and a separate section dedicated to significant zoo events, news and other activities that took place at the zoos, aquariums, breeding stations and other zoological organizations.

The volume also contains the latest data on the zoological collections of the CIS states, as well as some zoos of the Baltic states, Israel, Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic.

To make the publication timely and useful, the member zoos are requested to keep to the deadline for submission of the materials to the EARAZA ZIC.

We would like to remind you that the information on your zoological institution, taxonomic inventories of the collections (according to the taxonomy recognized by our issues and including scientific names), as well as the data on breeding of animals as of the 1st of January of the current year, should be sent before the 1st of February. Please note that the data from the institutions that have not submitted the required information by the deadline will not be included in the next volume.

Also, please try to observe the deadline when sending logotypes and guidebooks of your zoos for the general information section, as well as the notes on the zoo news and articles on education and methodical activities.

Please be aware that proposals for the Appendices "Surplus and Wanted List of Animals" should be sent to the EARAZA ZIC twice a year, with the data being shown as of the 1st of January and of the 1st of July of the current year.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that some changes have been made in the categories of the Red Book (IUCN)(see the Appendix No 1).

During the reporting period, the collection of the library of journals and other periodicals of different years, dedicated to particular taxons or groups of animals was continued. All the above sources are stored electronically in the PDF or DjVu formats, and just a few are available as web pages or in MSWord format, and may be copied onto CD or DVD disks. Following a long-standing tradition, the staff of the Scientific-Methodological Department provided assistance throughout the year to member zoos and other zoological institutions in preparing documentation on zoo construction projects, formation of zoological collections and reconstruction of existing zoo exhibits, and in arranging and conducting interzoo internships. Zoos and other interested organizations, as well as private individuals, were able to receive information, guidelines and manuals pertaining to the legislation on the husbandry of wild animals in captivity.

Totally, more than 200 requests for consultations from the zoos staff and representatives of other institutions, as well as from private individuals, were handled by the Scientific-Methodological Department. Among them, besides the EARAZA zoos, were many other state bodies and institutions engaged in conservation education.

Letters referring to the operation of currently existing zoos and on the design and construction of new zoos were sent out to the President and the Government of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russian Federation, as well as to executive and legislative bodies of Moscow Region, Kamchatka Krai, Penza, Perm and Smolensk. The EARAZA Information Center has created and maintains an electronic database on animal species included in International and European studbooks. As of 01.12.2014, it contained information on 47 species held by 64 zoos of Russia, CIS and Baltic countries. The new information on the animal species was sent to all keepers of the International studbooks. As usual, staff members of several EARAZA zoos continue keeping studbooks for several rare animal species, among them the Regional Studbook for the Amur Tiger kept by the Moscow Zoo and Regional Studbook for the Yellow-throated Marten kept by Novosibirsk Zoo. The European Studbook for the Steller's Sea Eagle is kept by the Moscow Zoo, for the Siberian White Crane – by Oka Natural Reserve, for the East Caucasian Tur – by the Tallinn Zoo. Staff member of the Tallinn Zoo is also acting as the EEP Coordinator for the European Mink. All the studbooks are managed by the Information centre. The members of the Group provided consultations and practical assistance to their colleagues from zoos of Kiev and Moscow. CD "Video of the EARAZA Working Group on Elephants " and the "White Elephant" magazine were issued. Collection of electronic library on elephant husbandry in captivity was continued. In 2014 many regional zoos participated in the following EARAZA International Conservation and Research Programs supervised by the Scientific-Methodological Department:

1. The Steller’s Sea Eagle

The Steller’s Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus Pallas, 1811) is endemic to Russian fauna and is included in the Red Book of Endangered Species of the Russian Federation (2001), IUCN List of Threatened Species, Appendix II of CITES (Annex A of the Council Regulation (EC)), Bonn Convention (App. I), and Appendices of the two-sided Agreements on Protections of Migratory Birds between Russia and the USA, Japan, China and Republic of Korea. The Program was launched in the time when the species was not on the verge of extinction, which is especially important in view of the existing threat of ecological catastrophes (such as AIV breakout in 2006). During 10 years, 26 Steller`s Sea Eagle specimens were captured in the Lower Amur Region under the project of the creation of artificial population in zoos and breeding centers. In 1995, European Studbook on the Steller’s Sea Eagle was started at the Moscow Zoo and approved by EAZA. Organization and keeping of information in the unified

database allowed to accurately calculate the number of birds kept at national and foreign zoos and breeding centers, and also to determine sex and age distribution, and origin of the birds. Coordinator of the EARAZA Program and European Studbook keeper for the Steller’s Sea Eagle Lubov Kurilovich collected material on the status of the European population of the Steller’s Sea Eagle as of 01.01.2014. The 15th volume of the European Studbook for the Steller's Sea Eagle was compiled and sent out to all participants of the program via e-mail. 1. Collection of biological samples of the captive Steller’s Sea Eagles was continued for genetic study and compiling DNA profiles of the birds.

2. Transfer recommendations have been prepared and circulated to the zoos and breeding centers of EARAZA and EAZA. 3. Due to financial support of EARAZA, monitoring of the Steller’s Sea Eagle population in the Lower Priamurye Region was continued by PhD Vladimir Masterov (Lomonsov State Moscow University). Publication of the expedition reports is planned in the 24th volumes of the Yearbook on Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos and Breeding Stations.

2. Mountain ungulates of Eurasia

The number of zoos keeping mountain ungulates has not changed significantly. Offspring was

obtained in the most zoos, having in their collections mountain ungulates. Successful breeding of argali (Ovis ammon ammon) in Novosibirsk Zoo, Marco Polo Sheep and the Sichuan Takin in the Moscow zoos was achieved during the reporting period. Within the Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia EARAZA Program Tallinn Zoo sent the group of 16 (8.8) blue sheep to the Breeding Centre of Rare Species of Mountain Ungulates "APECA" (Slovakia). As of 10.12.2014 in zoos around the world argali was kept only in Novosibirsk Zoo (1.3).

In 2014, representatives of the Moscow and Tallinn zoos participated in the work of the EEP/EAZA Sheep and Goat TAG. At the meeting of

the Group numerous issues of cooperation within the programs of EAZA and EARAZA including conservation of rare species of mountain ungulates were discussed. It was noted that cooperation between the EARAZA and EAZA zoos is extremely difficult due to the problems with obtaining permits for import of ungulates to the EU. Nevertheless some zoos overcome these bureaucratic procedures and obtain permits for the importation of animals from Russia to the EU. Thus, Tierpark Berlin managed to import from Moscow a couple of Sichuan takins. In December 2014, several species of mountain goats (Siberian ibex, Markhor, East Caucasian tur) were transferred from the Moscow zoo to Tallinn Zoo. Despite the existing problems, the work on the Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia Program should be continued.

For information on participation in this EARAZA program, please contact its coordinator Vladimir Fainstein (e-mail: [email protected]) or Tallinn zoo (address: Paldiski mnt 145, 13522 Tallinn, Estonia).

Currently within the EEP/EAZA Sheep and Goat TAG the following programs for the species, kept in the EARAZA zoos, are active:

Takin Budorcas taxicolor ESB Keeper – Douglas Richardson, KINGUSSIE (GB) East Caucasian tur Capra cylindricornis ESB Keeper – Vladimir Fainstein, TALLINN Markhor Capra falconeri heptneri EEP Coordinator – Nina Trontti, HELSINKI West Caucasian tur Capra caucasica ESB Coordinator – Jitka Vokurkova, OLOMOUC Nubian ibex Capra nubiana ESB Keeper – Patrick Roux, OBTERRE (FR) Long-tailed goral Naemorhedus caudatus ESB Keeper, KINGUSSIE Muskox Ovibos moschatus EEP Coordinator – Mikkel Stelvig, KOBENHAVN-ZOO Blue sheep Pseudois nayaur ESB Keeper – Jean-Luc, PARIS-JARDIN.

Undoubtedly, activities within the Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia Program need to be coordinated with already active programs, primarily EAZA programs.

3. Eurasian Bustard Conservation The project targets three species of the family Otididae occurring within the territory of Russia and Northern Eurasia: - The Great Bustard (Otis tarda tarda, O.t. dybowskii). Both subspecies are globally threatened. In early 2013, the population of the Western subspecies of the Great Bustard in the regional zoos comprised 41 (19.21.1), with 8 (3.5) birds being kept at the Moscow Zoo's Breeding Station. So far there are no birds of the Eastern subspecies kept in the regional collections. In 2011, no clutches were obtained from two females at Moscow Zoo. It should be noted that in 2013, about 10 eggs were obtained, but all of them were infertile. It is necessary to fill up the group of the Great Bustards in the Moscow zoo and other zoos with birds of the Western subspecies, so that the work on their breeding could be more active. One of the possible variants is to consider the birds which inhabit the Crimea, as this population is settled and it could be easier adopted to the artificial breeding, which is also confirmed by successful work of our Spanish colleagues with birds of the Spanish settled population. We hope that our further work aimed at breeding the Great bustards in captivity will help to achieve, as a result, a full value artificial population of this very interesting and valuable species, which has changed its status from game-birds to the rare and endangered species. - The Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax). The species is globally threatened. There are three birds

(1.2) of this species kept at the Breeding Station of the Moscow Zoo. Unfortunately, so far there have been no cases of breeding, though the male was observed showing mating behavior several times. At the beginning of 2014, 3 birds (2.1) were kept at the Karasuk Breeding Station of the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences)and Novosibirsk zoo, and work aimed at the future breeding of the birds has been carried out. Two birds (1.1) are kept at the Rostov-on-Don zoo and Penza zoo, equally. It is necessary to have more birds to continue work aimed at their breeding.

Page 73: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf-34-eng.pdf.pdf · INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ... Eurasian Regional Association

219

- The Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii). The species is globally threatened. At present, one male is kept at the Karasuk breeding station of Novosibirsk zoo, and his spring mating behavior has been observed. In Shymkent zoo one bird of an unknown sex is kept at present. The regional zoos need additional birds for developing natural captive breeding techniques. Both in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, breeding stations for the Houbara bustards are functioning. They are operating under the guidance of their sponsors, specialists in falcons breeding from UAE. One of the goals of these breeding stations is the release of a certain number of young grown up birds into their natural habitat in Central Asia. 4. Rare and Endangered Geese of Eurasia The goals of the project are: the development and implementation of the conservation strategy and recovery of rare species of Anseriformes with the help of intensive captive breeding and further reintroduction into the wild, and establishing the required number of stable and genetically viable breeding populations of rare Anseriformes in zoos and breeding stations. The following species have the highest priority for the program: - Swan goose - Anser cygnoides. This species breeds successfully at the Moscow Zoo and other zoos of the region. A stable breeding group of Swan geese has been created. The reintroduction

project is now hampered only by the lack of the interested nature conservation organizations that could carry out wildlife education activities among local people and hunters in the areas of potential reintroduction, prevent mortality of the released birds and implement monitoring of the wild population.

- Lesser white-fronted goose - Anser erythropus. In order to create the Scandinavian population of this species, together with Swedish ornithologists, birds from wild populations in the north of the European part of Russia have been captured. The birds were given over to the Swedish side for establishing breeding stock and further reintroduction of the young birds into the wild. The first positive results have been received. EARAZA zoos are also involved in the work aimed at the breeding of the Lesser White-fronted Geese. A hybrid of the Lesser white-fronted goose and the Red-breasted goose was born, and turned out to be a viable male. Its breeding ability is not known yet, but it is likely to be absent, since it is an intergenus hybrid.

- The Bewick's swan Cygnus columbianus. The Bewick's swans have not been breeding recently at the Moscow Zoo’s Breeding Station. At the Tallinn Zoo, the swans of the western subspecies breed from time to time. In other EARAZA zoos this species is not breeding. It is necessary to create suitable husbandry conditions for keeping and breeding of the Bewick's swans in these zoos, as well as in the other regional zoos.

The Program also focuses on other rare Anseriformes species (the Red-breasted Goose, the Brant Goose, the Aleutian Canada Goose, the Emperor Goose, the Bar-headed Goose, the Baikal Teal, the Marble Teal, the Common White-eye, the Mandarin Duck and the White-headed Duck). Some of these species breed successfully at the zoos and breeding stations of Western Europe. The other species regularly breed at the EARAZA zoos, but yet attention should be paid to all of the listed species and studies of husbandry and

Page 75: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf-34-eng.pdf.pdf · INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ... Eurasian Regional Association

221

reintroduction methods should go on. Moscow Zoo's Breeding Station continued breeding the Barnacle geese (Branta bernicla) from the birds raised in artificial environment from eggs collected on the Kanin peninsula in the Arkhangel region in 2004 and 2005. In 2014, the Breeding Station of the Moscow zoo obtained offspring of the Canada geese (Branta canadensis leucopareia) whose founder stock has been received from N.N.Gerasimov from the Breeding Station of those birds, located in the town Elyzovo in Kamchatka region. Unfortunately, this Breeding Station ceased to exist due to financial and other reasons. However, its 20-year long work resulted in the restoration of the wild Canada geese population which disappeared from North Kuril Islands 70 years ago. Now, in accordance with our Japanese colleagues' survey conducted in the wintering grounds of the birds, there are more than 500 of them. The birds also started breeding at the Kuril islands, and some of the birds without rings have been observed there.

Novosibirsk Zoo and Karasuk Breeding Station of the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences continued activities aimed at establishing breeding population of the White-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) representing one of the rare ducks of Eurasia. Hybridization with introduced Ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis), which is observed in the European part of the White-headed duck range, may result in further loss of the gene pool of the species. Therefore, establishing artificial

population of the White-headed duck has a high conservation importance. The species is included into the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Red Book of Russia and the Appendix II of CITES. 5. Eurasian Crane Conservation The network of zoos participating in the program continued to expand. In order to establish new pairs, the Siberian white cranes have been sent from the Oka reserve Breeding station and from the Moscow Zoo to the Ivanovo zoo, the "Limpopo" zoo and to Orto-Doidu zoo, Japanese cranes were transferred from the zoos of Izhevsk, Lipetsk, Moscow and Rostov-on-Don to Samara zoo, Saransk zoo, Novosibirsk zoo and "Madagascar" zoo and the Breeding station of the Oka reserve. Some of the Japanese and White-naped cranes, unsuitable for breeding in captivity, have been sent to private zoos. Breeding in zoos During 2014, three rare crane species (the Siberian crane, the Japanese crane and the White-naped crane) bred in 25 zoo centres. The Siberian cranes bred in the Moscow zoo, in Podkrushnogorsk, Tallinn, Yaroslavl zoos, in Roev Ruchei zoo, in the "Dodo" zoo and at the Oka reserve Breeding station. From 16 females, 21 fertile eggs were obtained, and out of them, 13 fledgelings were raised (mostly at the Breeding station - 12 of them). For the first time, young pairs started breeding at Podkrushnogorsk zoo and Yaroslavl zoo. Out of 30 breeding females of the Japanese crane, 24 laid 40 fertile eggs, out of which 22 fledgelings were raised. As far as the White-naped crane is concerned, 15 breeding females laid 18 eggs, out of which 8 fledgelings were raised. It should be noted that the sex ratio among young cranes born at the EARAZA zoos, varies for different crane species. Thus, females prevail in the offspring of Japanese and White-naped cranes during the last 10 years. This is a problem that prevents establishing new breeding pairs ( there are

Page 76: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf-34-eng.pdf.pdf · INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ... Eurasian Regional Association

222

11 bachelor females at 8 zoos) and the reasons for that should be studied in detail. The situation in the Siberian cranes is vice versa (there are 6 bachelor males), but this situation can be partially explained by the high rate of females' deaths. Internship and training. Within the frames of the EARAZA Program for Eurasian Crane Conservation, 12 members of staff from 7 zoos participated in the internship and training on the transportation of live eggs and practices of comprehensive medical examination of cranes at the Breeding Station of Oka State Biosphere Reserve. Releases into the wild. The Japanese crane. Four eggs of Japanese cranes and two eggs of the White-naped cranes were transported to the Rare Bird Reintroduction Station of the Khingansky Reserve (further on - the Station) for raising and subseguent release into the wild in May. Two of them turned out to be infertile, embryos in the other two died, and one fledgeling hatched successfully, so the chick of the Japanese crane was raised. After the first winter at the Station this crane will be released in the places of habitat. Two fertile eggs of the Japanese crane were also transported to the Station. However, this transportation also was not succesful - the embryos stopped developing inside the eggs. Two Japanese cranes, raised from the eggs laid by birds kept at the Breeding Station in 2013, were successfully released into the wild in April 2014. The White-naped crane. Four young birds, raised at the Station and having survived the first winter, were released into the wild in the protected zone of the Khingansky Reserve. The Siberian crane

On October 9, eight young Siberian cranes were shipped to the Astrakhan Nature Reserve and released into the wild in the gathering grounds of waterfowl and wetland birds in the Volga delta where migrating Siberian cranes of the Western population had been noticed before. As usual, the birds got used to the new place very soon. The staff members of the Astrakhan Reserve continued to monitor the cranes till they flew away in autumn.

The annual issue of the International Studbook for the Siberian crane was compiled in September (authors: T. Kashentseva, Oka reserve Breeding Station, Russia; and R. Belterman, Weltvogelpark Walsrode, Germany). It contains information about 377 individuals kept at 60 collections of 13 countries of the world, demographic and genetic analysis of the artificial population, and also historical data about more than 1000 Siberian cranes, plus almost complete bibliography of research works published about this species. Research Work on creation of genetic database on the cranes and sexing of them continued in cooperation with the N.I. Vavilov Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2014, the genetic analysis of blood samples for 129 cranes of nine species was done. For 96 birds of six species sex was determined, and the data was included into the new edition of the international studbook in 2014. 6. Establishing Reserve Populations of the Siberian Spruce Grouse Falcipennis falcipennis Coordinators and the main executors of the program - Cand.Sc.(Biol) V.A.Shilo and S.V.Klimova (Novosibirsk).

Contemporary range of the Siberian Spruce Grouse is presented by three isolated areas located on the vast territory, from Yakutia on its west part to Sakhalin on the east, and Primorye on the south. However, human activity in these areas leads to the fragmentation of the habitat. The population numbers are very low and the population is reducing dramatically. Formation of the new West-Siberian population of the Siberian Spruce Grouse In 2014, the Karasuk Breeding Station of the

Novosibirsk Zoo and the Institute of Animal Taxonomy and Ecology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences continued working on breeding the population of the Siberian Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis falcipennis) in the enclosures complex. For the husbandry of adult stock previously developed and proven methods were used. As usual, most of the chicks hatched from naturally incubated eggs. Staff of ecological inspection and hunting survey continue to monitor the birds previously released into the wild. Data on meeting reintroduced birds, coming from different places, are analysed. 7. Study, Conservation, and Breeding of the Pallas’ Cat Irina Alekseicheva, zoologist of the Moscow Zoo, is the coordinator or the program. During 2014, the following has been done: Work at the zoo The main goal of the program is creating a sustainable population of Pallas' Cats in captivity. In 2014, special attention was paid to the choice of medicine for vaccination of the Pallas' cats, instead of the vaccine Fel-o-vax, the production of which ceased. Our colleagues from the zoos of

Europe and America have consulted us on this issue. The work aimed at developing the preventive measures and methods of treatment for Pallas' cats was continued. Three animals, born at the Moscow zoo, were transferred to the zoos of Novosibirsk (1.1) and Chemnitz (Germany)(1.0). The work together with the Severtsov Institute on the definition of the hormone status of Pallas' Cat's females was continued. Education work. On March 3, 2014 the scientific and educational departments of the Moscow zoo took part in organizing the Cat's Day. On May 24, the Pallas' Cat's Day was held on the territory of the Moscow Zoo. In the frames of the youth movement project of the Russian Geographical Society "Lectures in the Moscow Parks", on August 23, 2014, the lecture about the Pallas' Cat was organized at the Krasnaya Presnya Park, and a lot of various events were offered to the Park's visitors: question competitions, drawing pictures etc. All these events were organized by the staff of the Mammals' Department of the Moscow Zoo in the frames of the program "Study, Conservation and Breeding of the Pallas’ Cat". At the conference "Rare and Endangered Species of Mammals in Russia", held in Khakassia on July 1-3, 2014, reports were made on the role of the zoos in conservation of biodiversity and on the EARAZA program as well. Also, at the 2nd scientific and practical summer school for the youngsters of the Russian Geographical Society, held at the Kaluga region on July 20-28, 2014, the report was made on the EARAZA program for the Pallas' Cat. Work in the Wild. Financial aid (with the sponsors' money) was given to the program of the Siberian ecological center for studying and conservation of the Pallas' Cat in the wild. 8. Conservation of Amur tigers and Amur leopards EARAZA continues cooperation with the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance (ALTA), participating in the activities of the Alliance on conservation of the Amur tigers and Amur leopards, as well as coordinating the EARAZA program on conservation and breeding of Amur tigers and EEP on Amur leopards. The leading world specialists engaged in conservation of feline populations, decided to create the Global Species Management Program (GSMP) for the Amur Tiger, in the frames of which

Page 79: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf-34-eng.pdf.pdf · INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ... Eurasian Regional Association

225

regional associations of WAZA (World Association of Zoos and Aquariums) must together manage the population of this species in captivity and support the programs of the Amur Tiger conservation in the wild. Co-convenors for the GSMP for Amur tigers: Tara Harris,(the coordinator of the North-American program for the Amur Tiger reproduction) and Tanya Arzhanova, (the coordinator of EARAZA program for the Amur Tiger). According to the opinion of GSMP initiators, this global program can play an important role in coordinating regional conservation programs for the Amur tiger and also in supporting the projects of nature populations conservation. EARAZA Program and EEP for Conservation and Breeding of the Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) GSMP co-convenors: Sarah Christie, Zoological Society of London ([email protected]) Tanya Arzhanova, EARAZA ([email protected]). EEP Coordinators: Jo Cook, Zoological Society of London Tanya Arzhanova, EARAZA ([email protected]) The status of ex-situ population of Amur leopards: As of December 2013, the EEP population equalled 110 (60.50) animals kept in 44 institutions. In 2013, in six EEP zoos 10 cubs were born (4.5.1), two of which were born dead. In the litter of cubs born in Prague zoo, one of the cubs had the melanism gene. As the EEP approach means that only those pairs of animals which do not have the melanism gene, should reproduce, the pair of animals in the Prague zoo will not be given recommendations for reproduction any more. In 2014, according to the data, 10 cubs were born in 5 zoos (3.7.0).

Page 80: INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL …earaza.ru/wp-content/uploads/inf-34-eng.pdf.pdf · INFORMATIONAL ISSUE OF EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ... Eurasian Regional Association

226

In 2013, in the population of leopards 7 (2.4.1) animals died, two of which were born dead, two other animals who died were more than 16 years old, and one female which had been born with a cataract and was totally blind, was euthanized. In 2014, only one animal died - a leopard born in 1994. In 2013, 7 transfers of animals between zoos were made, including the transfer of one male from one region to another (from the zoo of Novosibirsk to Kobe zoo in Japan). All the transfers were made in accordance with recommendations of the program coordinators. In 2014, 7 transfers of leopards were made, and four of these transfers were made with the aim of forming new pairs of animals. New EEP participants - EARAZA members In 2014, two zoos - EARAZA members - submitted their applications to participate in EEP for Amur leopards: the "Priamursky" zoo and the Primorsky Safari-Park. The applications were made in the proper form, with all the necessary grounds, but the EEP Committee still refuses to approve the suggestion about participation of these zoos in EEP. The EEP coordinators hope for the positive decision of this issue for both zoos and plan to continue the discussion of it with EAZA administration. The great amount of work aimed at conservation of Amur tigers and leopards became possible thanks to the constant financial aid from the zoos and private individuals. All in all, 160 428 Euros were collected for the nature conservation activities, and three quarters of this sum was given by the zoos. It should be noted that a great role in such charity actions is played by one of the EARAZA member zoos - the Tallinn Zoo. 9. Conservation of Rare Eurasian Sturgeon Species of the Palearctic In the autumn of 2014, monitoring of two reserved groups of the Sakhalin sturgeon (generation 2008) kept in captivity in Aleksin (Tula region) and in Vologda was carried out. During the ultra-sonic investigation it was found out that several females were pregnant carrying developing eggs and there were several sexually mature males. The females and the males have been marked. Experimental work at the breeding of the Sakhalin sturgeon brought up at the warm waters' collection will be a unique experience in the world, and it is scheduled for 2016. The received material is supposed to be given for free to several collections on the territory of the European part of Russia, and also to the Russian Far East - the Luchegorsk breeding station (Primorsky region). In December 2014, the State Biological Control organization of the Uzbekistan Republic gave a permission to the Mamun Academy (the city of Khiva) for catching the Big Amu Darya shovelhose in the Khorezm region, with the aim of creating a reserved maternal flock and working out the technology of artificial reproduction and keeping in the water pool conditions. This project is being carried out in the frames of cooperation between the Mamun Academy and Tashkent and Moscow zoos. A large sample of the Big Amu Darya Shovelhose, with body mass about 800 grams, was caught. The fish was placed into the water pool (constructed with the assistance from the Moscow Zoo) in the building of the Mamun Academy in Khiva. For now, it is the only sexually mature fish of large size, caught by the researchers for keeping in captivity.

10. Sexing birds by DNA using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) During 2014, O.Nesterenko, Moscow Zoo researcher, used PCR method for sexing birds from collections of 10 zoos: 1. Kaliningrad zoo - 10 birds 2. Samara zoo - 4 birds 3. Ivanovo zoo - 23 birds 4. Seversk wildlife park - 14 birds 5. Perm zoo - 9 birds 6. Station of reintroduction of rare species birds of Khingan Reserve - 8 birds 7. Yaroslavl zoo - 3 birds 8. Khabarovsk zoo - 3 birds 9. Rare cranes breeding station of the Oka State Biosphere Reserve - 10 birds 10. Novosibirsk zoo - 27 birds 11. Long-term project for the conservation of the Przewalski’s Horse The Moscow Zoo and other EARAZA zoos participate in building a breeding station for the Przewalski’s Horse under the Long-term Project for the Reintroduction of the Przewalski's Horse in the Orenburg Region. This project constitutes part of the Conservation Strategy for the Przewalski's Horse in Russia. The participants of this project are: the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, A.N.Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Steppe Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, EARAZA and other instituions. The restoration of the Przewalski's Horse wild population in the remaining areas of the Orenburg Steppe not only guarantees the survival of this species, but will also contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in steppe ecosystems and to their stability and rehabilitation. The curator of the project is N.Spasskaya, Cand.Sc. (biol.), Scientific-research Zoological Museum of Moscow State University named after M.Lomonosov.

The project, approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources in 2005, is aimed at creating the wild population on the Przewalski's Horse in the Orenburg Region. In 2013-2014, the Steppe Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Orenburg department of the Russian Geographical Society, with the support of the Board of Guardians of the Russian Geographical Society regional department, the first section of the enclosures for the steppe animals Breeding Center was opened on the territory of 36 hectares. The Center is located at the protected zone of the State nature reserve "Orenburgsky" and comprises 5 enclosures of various size (from 2,5 to 10 hectares) and several quarantine enclosures, all of them have corridors for moving the animals. There is a water stream going through the enclosures and a slit for the artificial drinking place. In May, 2014 the first animals were delivered to the Center: a young female of the Przewalski's horse (born in 2012) and a pair of adult kiangs (the male born in 2007 and the female born in 2005). The animals were transferred to the steppe animals Breeding Center by the Moscow Zoo in the frames of cooperation in the project "Orenburg's Tarpania". The female was named Alexandra, and the kiangs were named Fyodor and Fedora. After the adaptation and quarantine period the animals were released into large enclosures. During the summer and autumn of 2014, the infrastructure of the steppe animals Breeding Center was built, including the construction of winter facilities, etc. At the end of July, a pair of Bactrian camels with an offspring born in 2014, arrived at the Center. The animals came from Kazakhstan as a present to the head of the board of guardians of the Orenburg regional department of the Russian Geographical Society, Yu.Berg, who donated them to the Center. In November, two more specimen of the Przewalski's horses were brought to the Center - a male (born in 2012) and a female (born in 2008) from the zoo enclosure complex in Khotynets natural park (Orlovskaya region). Now preparation for constructing the second section of the enclosures for acclimatization of the reproductive group of the Przewalski's horses is going on, and discussions with various zoos of EARAZA and other breeding centers of Russia and Europe about selection of the Przewalski's horses for the group of the future population founders and creating the exhibition collection of the steppe animals of Eurasia, are continued.
