Chad! What springs to mind when you think of a republic in the heart of the African Sahel? Failed harvests and poverty? Goats, millet and peanuts?

Chad is the fifth-largest country in Africa, encompassing part of the Sahara Desert in the north and thick bush land in the south. Chad is also people – people among the poorest in the world who, despite their struggles with disease, hunger, a harsh climate and periods of unrest, welcome those who come to live in their midst.

WEC is part of a network of missions under the Evangelical Church of Chad. The Co-ordinating Committee of Missionary Activity encompasses more than 80 missionaries from various agencies. This includes about 10 members of WEC whose focus is church planting among unreached Muslims. We have particular burdens for the Maba, Masalit and Tama peoples, the Arabic-speaking nomads of eastern Chad, and for urban outreach to people from a multitude of ethnic groups. Our team members use their various skills to build relationships with local people. Teaching, medical help, leprosy care, work with the handicapped, student centres, language work and translation are used alongside visiting and friendship.

Would you care to join us on a mat in our neighbour's house to drink strong, sweet tea containing peanuts and mint? Or dip your hand with ours to eat hot millet dough and a pungent chilli sauce at a friend's house?

God is at work in Chad. Several groups of believers from Muslim backgrounds are currently being discipled. Join us and be part of building God's kingdom in this corner of His world!

As-salaam aleykum (Peace be upon you!) is a frequent Arabic greeting, but peace and unity are hard to achieve in Chad. The population of some seven million people includes about 18 different people groups, each with its own language. French is used widely in schools and offices, but Chadian Arabic, rather than French, is spoken by the majority in the centre and north. Away from major towns one may hear only tribal languages.

Chad is a secular state with freedom of religion, but about half the population is Muslim. There are more totally unreached peoples in Chad than any other African country. Although many churches have been established among the Animistic peoples of the south, for many years there was little outreach to the more resistant Muslims.
