• Around 100 library sites at the University of Oxford

– Centrally run Bodleian Libraries

• Includes the Central Bodleian, Law Library, Social Sciences Library and the Radcliffe Science Library

– College Libraries

• Only accessible to College members

– Departmental Libraries

• Small, specialist collections. Usually only open to department members.

• Oxford Bodleian Libraries are entitled to a free copy of every book and journal published in the UK – since 1610

• If it’s British we should have it

• Normally reference only

Library Regulations – Main Points

• Please do not eat or drink in libraries

• Please do not steal or deface library materials

• Please be considerate towards other users

• No talking on mobiles in the reading rooms

• Your University Card is your library card – needed for borrowing– 15 items– 1 week loans– High demand items overnight– College libraries will vary

• Renew online before overdue

• Fines charged for late return (20p standard loan / 50p/hour overnight)

Copyright Regulations

• Must be observed!

• Applies to printed & electronic materials

You can only copy or permanently download:

• 1 article per periodical issue

• 5% of total work, or 1 chapter

Scan & Deliver

• Request scans through SOLO.

• Scan sent to you within 24 hours.

• Charge of £4.75 (via PCAS).

• Available for ~6 million items held in storage.

• 1 Chapter/1 article for a book/journal.

Search Tips• Synonyms and abbreviations

– Global Positioning System / GPS

• Wild-cards– Use symbols to substitute for letters– Useful for alternative spellings and finding variations– E.g. pal?eo / pal$eo (Finds either palaeo or paleo)– seism* - Finds seismic, seismological, seismicity etc.

• Phrase searching– Use quotation marks to enclose expressions you wish to search as a

phrase– E.g. “Isotope fractionation”

• Boolean operators– AND, OR, NOT– “Global Positioning System” OR GPS

Database Extras - REST

• Refining– After you run your search, you can further refine your

results by date, author, topic or document type

• Exporting – Send your searching results to E-mail, print them out or

push them over to a reference manager

• Search Alerting– Allows you to run a search automatically every week or

month– Need to set up a free account in the database

• Trending– Use citation information to identify highly cited papers easily

• You can link from many of our databases directly to full text

• Look out for the ‘Find it @ Oxford’ button in your search results

Google Scholar

• Great for quickly locating a specific paper

• Lacks sophisticated searching tools

• Not selective – little quality control over contents

• Few ways to sort or refine search results

• Google can’t see everything! – some subscription

services are closed to crawling by Google
