THE DIOCESE OF SHEFFIELD
The Diocese of Sheffield is called to grow a diverse network of Christ-like, lively and
sustainable Christian communities in every place which are effective in making disciples and
in seeking to transform our society and God’s world.
Appointment of Project Officer for St Peter’s College We are seeking to appoint a part time Project Officer to work on the scoping, designing, branding
and publicity for the new virtual learning community of St Peter’s College
The Diocese
The Diocese of Sheffield serves almost 1.2 million people across South Yorkshire and adjoining areas.
The Diocese was founded in 1914 and contains the whole of the city of Sheffield, the Borough of
Rotherham and the Borough of Doncaster. In addition, it contains much of the Borough of Barnsley
and areas of East Yorkshire around Goole.
The Diocese currently has 176 parishes (205 churches and 150 benefices). These parishes are served
by 140 stipendiary clergy; around 30 self-supporting ministers and over 400 licensed Readers and
other lay ministers. There are twelve deaneries and two archdeaconries in the Diocese. The
Diocese has 39 primary schools and one secondary school.
The Diocese contains many contrasts in terms of relative wealth and poverty with very many areas
of both urban and rural deprivation. The churches vary significantly in terms of ecclesial tradition
and size.
The Diocese of Sheffield is a dynamic and forward looking Church of England diocese with a bold and
confident vision for the future. A new vision statement was agreed in November 2009 following the
appointment of the present Bishop of Sheffield. We have four agreed strategies which amplify this
vision statement:
Growing the Body of Christ (on evangelism and making disciples)
Salt and Light (on the transformation of society)
Reimagining Ministry for Mission (our strategy for ministry) and
A Little Letter on Giving (on stewardship and sustainability)
Copies of all of these documents can be found on the diocesan website.
We are currently renewing our strategy for ministry and a new booklet will be published in early
2016.
The Diocese seeks to work ecumenically through Churches Together in South Yorkshire.

St Peter’s College
The Diocese of Sheffield plans to create a virtual learning community, St Peter’s College, as a way of
focussing, branding and drawing together all of the training for mission and ministry offered by the
Diocese
The purpose of St Peter’s is to encourage and affirm the flourishing of lay and ordained ministries
among the people of God. The vision is that of a learning community that discerns, develops and
forms the gifts that the people of God bring to the mission and ministry of the church. It aims to
provide high quality training that is both relevant and appropriate as we seek to grow a mixed
economy church in the Diocese of Sheffield.
The St Peter’s College portfolio will include: formation for Christian ministry generally and also for
authorised and licensed lay ministries; Initial Ministerial Education for ordinands (mostly for
permanent, self-supporting ministry); preparation for lay pioneer ministry; Initial Ministerial
Education for curates and Continuing Ministerial Development for the lay and ordained.
It is expected that the St Peter’s brand and concept will be in its final stage of design, ready for the
building of the website, by the time the Project Officer is in post.
Role of the Project Officer
Primarily the Project Officer will work as a key member of the team tasked with the launch of St
Peter’s College. The purpose of the role is to work closely with the Director of Formation for
Ministry, the Diocesan Communications Manager and external Web Consultants in the scoping,
designing, branding and publicity needed to launch St Peter’s at the beginning of September 2016 as
the learning community for mission and ministry in the Diocese of Sheffield.
The Ethos of St Peter’s College
As previously noted the purpose of St Peter’s is to encourage and affirm the flourishing of lay and
ordained ministries among the people of God. The vision is that of a learning community that
discerns, develops and forms the gifts that the people of God bring to the mission and ministry of
the church. It aims to provide high quality training that is both relevant and appropriate as we seek
to grow a mixed economy church in the Diocese of Sheffield.

Being equipped and formed for ministry and mission takes a life-time! This process of life-long
learning is to encourage the people of God to grow and develop in important areas of discipleship
and ministry. The Church has identified these as1:-
Christian Faith and Discipleship
Mission, Evangelism and Growing Disciples
Spirituality and Worship
Personality and Character
Relationships and Community
Collaboration and Shared Leadership
Vocation and Ministry within the Church of England
Within each of these areas there are three important facets namely2:-
Being: This is concerned with who a person is, what motivates and energises them and what
habits they have. The goal is developing Christ-like character and therefore underpins
all other giftings in service and ministry. This is often discerned relationally and
developed through a combination of learning, experience, reflection and prayer.
Knowing: Knowledge and understanding are signposts to the learning that is needed to equip
people for discipleship and service. The people of God are called to learn and be shaped
by the Holy Spirit within the community of faith.
Doing: The skills and abilities necessary for effective service and ministry. While natural skills
and abilities may be an indication of gifting for ministry, skills can and should be further
honed, practised and reflected upon.
It is only when these are also present that genuine formation for ministry occurs.
At the heart of the St Peter’s College are the following principles and values:-
To be a Christian disciple is to be a learner - it’s a life-long process and a life-giving spiritual
virtue
Learning is set in the context of worship and is considered to be part of our worship - as it
involves a giving of ourselves to God and others; learning more about God, the world and
others; a living out of our individual and communal callings
Learning is transformational as it requires a willingness to be challenged and changed,
leading to personal transformation and the transformation of practice
We learn as the Body of Christ not as a collection of individuals. Hence we are a learning
community and this community is at its most effective when participants are committed to
the mutual flourishing and edification of every member.
1 As stated in ‘Forming and Equipping The People of God for Ministry and Mission’, Ministry Council of the
Church of England(2014) 2 Ibid p3

In the learning environment we aim to value the life experiences and insights of all
participants - for all contribute to the learning experience.
We encourage learners to be teachers, and teachers to be learners too!
We aim to provide a safe space where participants are open to learn from those who are
different from themselves and are willing to step out of their comfort zone in order to
review what they believe and why. This therefore asks participants to be vulnerable,
respectful and hospitable towards new ideas and others
Learners are encouraged to study at a level appropriate for them and the calling on their
lives.
