CREATION AND DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION

Information is created in many original forms, to satisfy the creator and to sit the user. Once created, the information is disseminated using a range of media and means of transmission.

SUBSETS OF INFORMATION NEEDS

1. Information demands (or requirement)- It refers to the demands which may be vocal or written and made to a library or to some other information system.

2. Information wants (desire)

INFORMATION NEED

Taylor (1968) posits four points along the need continuum:

1. An actual but unexpressed need (visceral)

2. A conscious description of the need

3. A formal statement of the need

4. A compromised need.

INFORMATION NEEDS

But it was bolstered by Rees (1963) Rees agreed with these points. Taylor concentrated on the individual involved; Rees emphasizes the interface between the user and the library. Yet both discussions help to reveal the process of information seeking for the purpose of satisfying needs.

INFORMATION NEEDS

Once basic assumption behind the discussion of information needs is that, people need information.

Nehnevajsa (1966) begins at this point and further states that “The question is that whether men need information, for they do. Rather, the issue is whether the information available for them is of the right kind and quantity, of acceptable accuracy, and of appropriate timeliness.- This time Nehnevajsa speaks now of the QUALITY of the information.

INFORMATION NEEDS

In spite of the difficulty inherent in definition, the search for answer continues, Established systems are aware of the community. These same systems know that effective change must respond to needs.

HOW IMPORTANT IS SATISFACTION TO OUR USER. I would give you an example for this,

CASE ANALYSIS

One of the study in Charles Bourne (1973) found out that at least 70% of the

population in USA never uses a library (library public service),

As a result, library budgets are declining

because the society does not feel that the library is meeting the needs of the public.

So as the response the library created programs and services to meet the needs of the public especially those in sub-communities.

It is clear that continues study of information needs is vital and that information agencies must become aware of the general patterns of information needs that have already been formalized. From the generalizations which can be determined from many studies of information needs, come the guidelines for planning information services. Information agencies can serve both information demands and information wants.
