Dear readers,
Most German high school students will have
completed their “Abitur” (high school leaving
certificate) by the end of May and for most
universities the application process for the
winter semester 16/17 is in full swing.
In this issue ...
... we will be focusing on the application
requirements and helpful links. Furthermore,
we have had many recent events and would
like to give you an insight where the DAAD
was represented or where you can meet us in
2016 if you need more information on
studying in Germany.
Last but not least, for this issue, we met and
interviewed two young polytechnic students
who are part of the very interesting dual study
programme „Poly-goes-UAS“.
We hope that you will enjoy reading this
edition of our newsletter. If you have any
queries, feedback or ideas regarding the
content, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Anglo-Chinese School Career Fair
On 9th March, the DAAD attended the
popular Career Fair at the Anglo-Chinese
School (Independent).
Students who were about to complete their
A-Levels or IB had a chance to explore study
opportunities within Singapore as well as
abroad. Among many booths, the DAAD
presented studying in Germany as an option
for their higher education. We had a great
response and throughout the day, students
got a chance to ask questions and explore
the opportunities of studying in Germany.
NTU German Week
On 16th March, Claudia Finner from DAAD
attended the NTU German Week. Sascha
Kienzle, Head of the Science and Technology
Department of the German Embassy in
Singapore, welcomed the students before
Claudia Finner presented the opportunities to
do a Master’s in Germany. Students were
particularly interested in the admission
process, German language requirements and
the cost of living and studying in Germany.
They could also ask any remaining questions
in a Q&A session following the presentation.
NUS “Die Deutsche Sphäre“
Also on 16th March, Claudia Finner attended
an event organized by the “Die Deutsche
Sphäre”, the NUS Student’s German
Language Society, speaking about doing a
Master’s and living in Germany.
Delegation Stifterverband
From the 20th-22nd of April a delegation or-
ganized by the German Stifterverband visited
Singapore. DAAD was happy to assist in or-
ganizing this visit and support the delegation
during their time in Singapore. The Stifter-
verband is a network with the goal to develop
higher education, efficiency in science and
smart innovation in Germany. German
university leaders visited Singapore as part of
a study trip that included Malaysia and Hong
Kong to learn more about the Asian approach
to ‘Digitalisation in Higher Education’. During
their stay in Singapore they visited various
education and research institutions.
Their visit concluded with a gathering of local
educators and researchers at the Residence
of the German Ambassador to Singapore.

Visit by students of the Nanyang Polytech-
nic German Language Optional Elective
During their visit of the Goethe Institut on
25th May, 16 students of the Nanyang
Polytechnic dropped by the DAAD Office to
briefly gather some information on studying in
Germany.
We hope that many of them consider continu-

Note: Typically, most polytechnic students
will need to attend a 1 year foundation course
at a Studienkolleg prior to commencing their
university studies in Germany.

Study in Germany
Apply now for the winter semester 16/17
By the end of May, most German students
have completed their Abitur tests (German
High School Leaving Certificate) and are
waiting for their results. Now is the time to
apply to universities for German and
international applicants alike.
For most universities the deadline to apply is
15th July.
Below, we have compiled a list of useful
links where you can find information on the
application process:
Application
Many universities now rely on uni-assist.de
to process their application documents.
Uni-assist ensures that the application
documents are complete and meet the
requirements to study in Germany and then
passes on the application to the university. If
you apply to several universities there are
even added benefits such as paying less
fees for additional applications (75 Euro for
the first, 15 Euro for every subsequent
application).
Check if the university of your choice is
listed with uni-assist: http://www.uni-
assist.de/uni-assist-en.html
For more information you can check the
latest webinar by uni-assist: https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc40oI9uaMc
Should the university not be listed on uni-
assist, they will have their own application
procedure posted on their website.
Note that submission dates vary and check
directly at the university website or with their
international office for the exact dates.
For questions regarding applications to the
university of your choice, contact the
International Office (Akademisches
Auslandsamt) of the university.
Documents
Documents such as school leaving
certificates or grade reports are typically
accepted in English, but may have to be
authenticated or notarized. This would also
apply for Germany translations if they are
needed. For notarization or authentication,
please contact the German Embassy.
Language
Even if you are planning to study in English,
some German will go a long way to help you
communicate more easily.
You can check out courses at the local
Goethe Institut or for intensive courses in
Germany check out FaDaF.
If you have any further questions regarding
studying in Germany, feel free to email us or
schedule an appointment with us at our office
in Neil Road.

Interview -
Pun Hao Lim & Joey Chua -
Poly-goes-UAS Programme
Recently, we spoke to Pun Hao Lim and Joey
Chua, both students from Nanyang Polytechnic
who are taking part in the Poly-goes-UAS
(University of Applied Sciences) programme.
Both students were coming from their class at the
Goethe Institut where they have been learning
German for the past year. With only a few weeks
left before their departure to Germany, they were
excited about their new prospects.
“I wanted to learn a new language and it’s good
to receive a degree from Germany which is
internationally highly recognized”, said Joey
who, like Pun Hao, holds a Diploma in Digital and
Precision Engineering. “Also, I want to travel and
find it interesting to learn more about the
differences between Asian and Western
characteristics.”
“Germany is the leader in Engineering and I
studied German during my Polytechnic years,”
added Pun Hao when asked “Why Germany?”
Pun Hao will study Electronics in Mannheim on a
6-month rotational schedule while doing the
practical part of the dual education at Heraeus in
Hanau.
Joey’s schedule requires a switch every 3
months between studying Mechanical
Engineering in Lörrach to her practical training at
SICK. She was already enrolled in a special
internship programme, so while attending
German classes in the morning, she was getting
to know her colleagues in Singapore.
„This gave me the opportunity to fully focus on
learning German and my studies instead of
worrying about living expenses“, said Joey.
Like any other student going to Germany, both
were looking forward to travelling. „The
Oktoberfest, skiing, hiking... things you cannot do
here in Singapore“ appealed to Pun Hao while
Joey had many cities on her list to visit:
Hamburg, Heidelberg, Freiburg and Cologne
came to her mind immediately.
ABOUT Poly goes UAS
The Poly-goes-UAS programme gives
polytechnic students from Singapore the
opportunity to follow a ‘dual‘ study path where
they will be studying for their Bachelor‘s and
working at a German company on a 3 or 6 month
rotational schedule. The companies are part of
the „Mittelstand“, small to medium sized German
companies which also have a presence in
Singapore. They are often family–owned
engineering companies and leaders in their field.
Prior to their studies in Germany, the polytechnic
graduates spend one year taking German
classes at the Goethe Institut in Singapore, often
already completing an internship at the German
company as well.
During their studies, their companies will pay
them a monthly allowance and sponsor one flight
back home per year.
After the completion of the programme, there is
no bond with the companies, yet, students may
still need to serve their previous bond time from
their polytechnic studies here in Singapore.
To learn more about this programme, check
