Executive function and self-regulation skills enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, filter distractions, prioritise tasks, set and achieve goals, control impulses, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. When children and young people have issues with executive functioning, any task that requires planning, organisation, memory, time management and flexible thinking becomes a challenge. Different forms of executive function skills start to develop shortly after birth with growth continuing into early adulthood. Children aren’t born with these skills - they are born with the potential to develop them. Children need good relationships with adults and a healthy environment, both physical and mental, or their executive function skill development can be seriously delayed or impaired. Neglect, abuse and/or violence, both experienced or witnessed, may expose children to stress that impair the development of executive function which can have a negative effect on learning. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Parents and Caregivers

Tuesday the 10th of March is a Student Free day so make sure you have this on your calendar. Staff will be spending the day at Murray Bridge High School along with approximately 250 other educators from across the district. We will be learning about executive function and the impact on learning. Executive function is like the CEO of the brain. It’s in charge of making sure things get done from the planning stages of the job to the final deadline.

LITTER-FREE LUNCHES

HELP US TO CUT DOWN ON LITTER IN OUR SCHOOL AND SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT!

On Clean Up Australian Day and Schools Clean Up Day (held each year in March), hundreds and thousands of students and volunteers across the country clean up their local environment and reduce the amount of rubbish polluting our beaches, parks, creeks and streets. We can do our part too! Schools can also greatly reduce rubbish (litter) by cutting down or cutting out the amount of packaging used for lunches that students bring to school. Many schools have regular “wrapper free” or “litter free” lunch days which not only helps clean up schools, it also saves the environment, helps families to save money, and encourages kids to eat less packaged (processed) foods that are often higher in fat, salt or sugar than fresh foods. Some tips for packing a “wrapper free” or “litter free” lunch are: 1. Use alternatives to plastic and foil food packaging like:

paper bags or wrap (choose recycled paper) reusable plastic containers grease-proof paper (which can be re-used) washable and reusable sandwich (zip lock) bags

2. Reuse and refill existing drink bottles from home with water instead of purchasing boxed juice or plastic drink containers.

Little Things Matter We have purchased a large number of class take home books for children to read each night. This is great …. BUT…. we need them to be covered in contact. The teachers and SSOs have been taking them home to cover and the pile just doesn’t seem to be getting smaller. The sooner we can get them covered the sooner they are available for the children. Here comes the grovel… If you could spare an hour or so on Friday of Week 7 (13th March) to come in to the LOTE room and cover some books it would be fabulous - bring a friend(s). Liz - one of our book covering gurus will give a demonstration - so don’t worry if you are not experienced. Catherine Bruce’s Year 4/5 will provide cups of tea / coffee and biscuits. Due to swimming and Sports Day we will not hold an Assembly until Friday, Week 11 of this term. It will be held in the performing Arts Room at 9.05am followed by a morning tea in the LOTE room. Swimming is going swimmingly. However, there have been some concerns raised. I have spoken with the instructors regarding these concerns. I have asked all teachers who observe the daily swimming lessons and they are all very pleased with the quality of instruction and the participation of the students. I have asked the students who have been this week and almost everyone was happy. Ms Record and I have been down to the pool often and we are very pleased with the progress in the children's skill level and instruction. I am amazed at how much more skilful and confident the children are after only 5 swimming lessons. The instructors have said how well behaved the students are - something to be proud of. Thank you for the support you give the school. I appreciate when you come and discuss concerns because, while I can’t always change things, I need to at least be aware and have the opportunity to try. Don’t forget to let us know when you are pleased as well - teachers work very hard to meet the learning and social needs of the children in their care and it is nice to sometimes get a kind word or a thank you.

Can you help your child learn their tables? This week we are working on 4 x tables. Years REC and 1 keep working on counting in 2, 5 and 10. Year 2 can start counting in 4s, while others need to know them forwards, backwards and sideways.

Have a good week - see you at sports day

CMASSA SWIMMING 2015

Congratulations to all competitors who participated in the CMASSA swimming carnival at Loxton on Tues-day February 17th, competing against Swan Reach Area School and East Murray Area School. It was fantastic to see everyone put in such an effort for the MCC team, encouraging and helping each other out. Some students were also happy to swim in ‘extra’ events to support the East Murray Area School team. Thanks also to the group of senior students who came along as ‘helpers’ and took on their roles responsi-bly.

The weather was perfect, the atmosphere was great and the sportsmanship displayed by all students was excellent. Thank you to the parents and caregivers who came along on the day and offered support and helping to create a great cheer squad.

A special thanks to Mr Wilsdon for coordinating such a successful event. Congratulations to the following trophy winners:

INFORMATION FOR YOU (cont)

CHILD RESTRAINT LAWS

When travelling in a motor vehicle in South Australia, all children under 16 years of age must be restrained in a suitable approved restraint that is properly adjusted and fastened. The law is specific about what type of restraint is to be used at different ages and where children must be seated in a vehicle. The aim of these laws is to reduce the risk of injury caused by restraints that are unsuitable for a child's size. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers are correctly restrained. Penalties include expiation fees and demerit points.

Children up to the age of 6 months Must use an approved rear-ward facing infant restraint. Must not travel in the front seat of a vehicle that has two or more rows of seats.

Children 6 months up to 4 years Must use either an approved rear-ward facing infant restraint or a forward-facing child safety seat with an inbuilt harness. Must not travel in the front seat of a vehicle that has two or more rows of seats.

Children 4 years up to 7 years Must use either an approved forward-facing child safety seat with an inbuilt harness, or a booster seat with a properly fastened and adjusted lap-sash seatbelt or child safety harness. Must not travel in the front seat of a vehicle that has two or more rows of seats, unless all the other seats are occupied by children who are also under 7 years.

Children 7 years up to 16 years Must use either an approved child restraint (a child safety seat or booster seat depending on their size), or a seatbelt that is properly adjusted and fastened. An adult seatbelt won't generally fit a child properly until they are at least 145cm tall. Children should remain in a booster seat until they can wear a seatbelt safely. Seating children in the front seat Children aged under 4 years must not travel in the front seat if a car has two or more rows of seats. Children aged between four years and up to seven years may travel in the front seat if a car has two or more rows of seats, provided they use an approved restraint (e.g. a booster seat) and only in the following situations: all rear seats are being used by children aged under 7 years. there is not enough space to put a third restraint in the back seat. In this situation you will need to use a booster seat that is manufactured without a top tether strap as anchorage points are not available for the front seat. Children aged seven and over may legally sit in the front seat of a motor vehicle that has two or more rows of seats, providing they are appropriately restrained for their size. However children are at a greater risk of serious injury when travelling in the front seat. The National Child Restraint Guidelines recommend children 12 years of age and under are safest in the rear seat, regardless of the type of restraint they are using. If your car has only one row of seats (for example, a ute) children may travel in the front row provided they use an approved child restraint or booster seat. If a child must travel

CHILD RESTRAINT LAWS (CONT)

in the front row where there are airbags present, you should always follow the instructions from both the child restraint and vehicle manufacturer. A rearward facing child restraint must not be used in the front seat where there is a passenger airbag. You will also need to check whether an anchorage point is available (for rearward and forward facing child safety seats) before the restraint can be used. Children are safer when travelling in the back seat. So no matter what your child's friends are allowed to do or how much pressure your child is putting on you to sit in the front, keep their safety a priority and buckle them up in the back seat. The law may not require them to sit in the back seat once they turn seven years old, but you can. - See more at: http://mylicence.sa.gov.au/road-rules/seatbelts-and-child-restraints#sthash.Gl33VxFy.dpuf
