Appre ntice shi ps and Empl oyment

Apprenticeships through Group Training Organisations

Registering with a Group Training Organisation (GTO) is one strategy to try when looking for an apprenticeship. GTOs employ apprentices and trainees and place them with a host business until the apprenticeship or traineeship has been completed. For more information about GTOs, visit the Group Training Australia website at http://www.grouptraining.com.au/. This site includes a list of GTOs and their contact information.

Labour market snippets

Some health science graduates may have difficulty finding employment - The federal government’s industry employment projections data show that the Health Care and Social Assistance sector will be the leading provider of new jobs in the Australian labour market. However, according to an article on the My Health Career website, not all students who study degrees in health will find it easy to gain employment at the end of their course. Why might dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, optometry and nursing graduates be at risk? Visit https://www.myhealthcareer.com.au/career-university-dept-of-employment-projections-to-2019 to find out more.

The hidden jobs market

The following points are adapted from ‘Where are all the jobs? The hidden jobs market’ written by Marni Williams.

The hidden jobs market consists of jobs that are available but aren’t advertised.

It is estimated to be from 50 - 80 per cent of the entire jobs market.

To access the hidden jobs market you need to network.

Networking is not just about meeting lots of people.

Effective networking means being focused by first deciding what sort of work you want.

Then you need to identify employers who offer that sort of work. A helpful website that lists large employers in Australia is Job Adviser at http://www.jobadvisor.com.au/. Your social network (family, friends, friends’ parents, neighbours, etc.) can also help you identify employers.

Put dollars at the bottom of your priority list, particularly when you're starting out.

You may not get your ideal job first up. It is more important to find an employer and job that gives you a path you want to take.

Approach employers who look promising. There's a fine line between being persistent and being annoying, so always be very conscious and respectful of people's time.

If you say you want to work for an organisation, have a clear set of reasons why – saying, ‘because you look like a cool company’ isn't a very strong reason. Instead think about their values as a business, the market they operate in, their reputation, how they fit in with your own vision.

The full article can be accessed from the Career FAQs website at http://www.careerfaqs.com.au/news/news-and-views/where-are-all-the-jobs-the-hidden-jobs-market-revealed/.

You register to sit for the test on the UMAT website at https://umat.acer.edu.au/. On time registrations close at 5 pm on 5 June 2015. Late registrations are accepted up to 5 pm on 19 June 2015 (a late fee applies). The test date is 29 July 2015. Results will be available in late September 2015. Some important points are:

It is essential that you read the entire UMAT 2015 Information Booklet on the UMAT website before you register

UMAT scores can be used for admission only in the year following the test (do not register for UMAT 2015 unless you are planning to apply for a course commencing in 2016)

You can only register to sit for UMAT 2015 if you have already completed or plan to complete Year 12 in 2015 (Year 11 students or students in the first year of a two-year Year 12 cannot sit for UMAT 2015).

Year 12 students – time is passing

This year is passing rapidly. There are less than four months left until the QTAC online application is activated (4 August 2015). You need to begin serious planning for 2016 if you have not already started. If you haven’t a clue where to start or aren’t aware of your options, make an appointment with your school guidance officer/counsellor ASAP. Starting this term, you will have many opportunities to explore your options. For example:

29 – 30 May 2015 - Brisbane Careers and Employment Expo at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. See http://careersemploymentexpo.com.au/. Also, careers expos will be held in regional centres throughout Queensland (see http://www.qtac.edu.au/courses---institutions/open-days-expos).

From May to August most of the institutions have open days at which you can obtain information about courses and check out the campuses. See http://www.qtac.edu.au/courses---institutions/open-days-expos for a list of dates.

Study Skills

Staying motivated

With the pressure of assignments, exams, social events (who should I take to the formal?), and career and course decision making, it is easy to lose sight of the goals you set yourself for your senior studies. The following suggestions for regaining your drive and motivation are adapted from the Chartered Accountants website at http://www.charteredaccountants.com.au/Students/Study-resources/Staying-motivated.

One step at a time - Getting motivated again takes a little time. So, just pick a small task, and address that. Break big projects and assignments into smaller ones, and tackle just one, then another - before you know it, you’re starting to feel like you’re achieving something, and that will boost your confidence.

Be realistic - Lack of motivation can sometimes happen when you doubt your ability to achieve your goals and projects. Maybe you’re demanding too much of yourself. Look at what you’ve got on your plate: is it realistic? If not, try and reduce the workload by talking to teachers, guidance officers/counsellors and parents. They’re human too!

Take a break - Sometimes, all you need to motivate yourself again is to take a break. Go for a walk, catch up with friends, treat yourself to a movie or a meal. It’s amazing how walking away from the immediate issues can help you see them with fresh eyes when you get back to them.

Reward yourself - Go on, have a treat! You may think you’re not doing so well, so think about what you have already achieved, and reward yourself for that.

Remember the dream - If you’re losing motivation, you’re probably caught up with the day-to-day detail. Just remind yourself why you’re doing this - to live a comfortable, successful, independent life. Now picture what that will be like. Feeling better?

Ask for help - If you’re not clear on an assignment, ask your teacher or a fellow student. Just discussing the issues may make it clearer and kick start your energy.

Read a biography - Many of the famous, successful people we admire faced difficulties and failure in their lives. A biography will put your current challenges in context, and allow you to see you’re not alone.

27

Phone a friend - One of the oldest ideas in the book, but it really does help to talk with someone who can give you a positive point of view regarding how you are feeling. Talk to someone who is empathetic NOT sympathetic.

Year 12 Que stions

Questions from Year 12 students

Q. - How do I apply to university for next year?

A. - You apply through QTAC for most Queensland tertiary courses. Applications to tertiary institutions in other states are through tertiary admissions centres similar to QTAC (see http://www.qtac.edu.au/applications/apply-here/applying-interstate for information about interstate applications). You apply directly to all other institutions.

Q. - What is QTAC?

A. - The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) is a public, not-for-profit company that manages the application and offer processes for a number of universities, TAFE institutes and some private colleges in Queensland (three interstate institutions are also included). QTAC does not make the rules about entry to courses. The institutions make the rules and QTAC administers these rules.

Q. - How many courses can I apply for through QTAC?

A. - You can apply for up to six courses from any of the institutions that use QTAC. You receive only one offer (if you meet the prerequisites and have a competitive OP or Rank) at any given offer round.

Q. - When will I receive my QTAC application form?

A. - The QTAC application is an online application. It will be activated on 4 August 2015 on the QTAC website at http://www.qtac.edu.au/. The ‘on-time’ due date for applications is 30 September 2015. After this date a hefty late fee is applied.

Q. - How are applicants selected for courses through QTAC?

A. - There are usually more applicants than available places for many of the courses. Selection is based on meeting minimum entry requirements (prerequisite subjects, folio, audition, etc.) and on merit (OP or Rank). Once minimum entry requirements are met, applicants compete on the basis of merit.

Q. - What are cut-offs and how are they derived?

Page 29: INFORMATION BULLETIN - EDITION 6 Queensland …...INFORMATION BULLETIN - EDITION 6 Queensland 21/04/2015 to 01/05/2015. 2 ... Scientist; Biotech Research Associate; Research Scientist;

29

A. - A cut-off for any specific course is the OP or Rank of the last applicant to be given a place in the course before all places in the course are filled. Normally, cut-offs are not predetermined by the institution offering the course. They are the result of supply and demand - the number of places available, the number of applicants applying for the course and the OP or Rank of those applicants. Because of this, cut-offs can change from year to year and offer round to offer round.

Q. - What is the difference between undergraduate and postgraduate courses?

A. - The term ‘undergraduate’ is normally applied to diploma, advanced diploma, associate degree and bachelor degree courses. ‘Postgraduate’ usually applies to courses you can study after completing a bachelor degree, e.g. graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters and doctorate.
