“An educational institution must be able to instill confidence and an undying smile in every student. If you are confident, you can create wealth anywhere; if you have an undying smile, you are able to take up any challenge.”

Preamble: Over the years, a paradigm shift has been observed in the landscape of science. This
is attributed to the enormous amount of new challenges encountered by scientists such as
discoveries, employability, cutting edge research, and ever-increasing demands of this rapidly
changing modern society. Henceforth, a more pragmatic approach has been felt, necessitated, and
implemented in today’s science education and research to counter these challenges. Consequently,
cross-, inter-, and multi-disciplinary research fields have emerged, leading to a convergence of
ideas, knowledge, and expertise. Therefore, knowledge and expertise in basic science and
computational/soft skills are necessary at under- and post-graduate levels to prepare the students
to thrive in this highly competitive and complicated environment. It is in response to this
background, B.Sc. Physics (Hons.), B.Sc. Mathematics (Hons.), M.Sc. Physics, M.Sc.
Mathematics, M.Sc. Integrated Physics, & M.Sc. Integrated Mathematics programs are
envisioned by the Department of Physics & Mathematics. These programs are tailored to
incorporate the essential ingredients of the multifaceted education system of the contemporary
world. They (i) provide the much needed and strong foundation in Physics/Mathematics so that
students can develop the ability to apply the subject knowledge in any allied fields, (ii) help
students to develop programming proficiency with high-end software for both computation and
automation, (iii) give students an opportunity to use advanced laboratory equipment, and (iv)
offer necessary soft skills to students to build their professional careers.
Salient features: These programs are designed to cater and to meet the needs and aspirations
of contemporary UG & PG students in Physics and Mathematics. The salient features are:
A. Learning Outcome-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) & Choice Based Credit System
(CBCS) as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.
B. Advanced Experimental and Computational Labs.
C. State-of-the-art classrooms and Technology Enhanced Learning.
D. Holistic and pedagogical teaching-learning process.
E. Extra-curricular activities.
Objectives: The objectives of these programs are to
1. Provide – (i) Pedagogical and content knowledge of the subject & (ii) Technical and soft
skills.
2. Create thinking abilities.
3. Train to ‘Read-to-Learn’ and ‘Learn-to-Read’.
4. Make ‘Learning-while-Doing’ a realistic process.
5. Develop ‘Problem Solving Skills’ (PSK).
6. Develop proficiency in software/hardware programming.
7. Connect science and technology with society.
8. Prepare for various national/international level competitive/entrance exams (NET, GATE,
JAM, & Subject GRE) for higher studies (M.Sc./Ph.D.).
9. Improve self-efficacy.
Outcomes: After completion of the program, students will
1. Have – (i) Conceptual understanding of the subject, (ii) Broad view of the world of science
and technology, & (iii) Critical thinking & analytical ability.
2. Be able to – (i) Understand other scientific topics, (ii) Answer & solve basic & conceptual
questions and problems, (iii) Handle/tackle challenging problems, (iii) Apply the concepts in
daily life, (iv) Communicate scientific results effectively and fluently, (v) Connect science
and technology with society, (vi) Apply concepts of physics/mathematics in society
(sociophysics, econophysics. etc.), (vii) Study & understand research-related articles, (viii)
Handle & trouble sophisticated instruments/software, develop code/ low-cost as well as high-
end instruments, (ix) Get involved easily with research lab, (x) Pursue higher studies in
physics/mathematics and other allied branches, and many more
Laboratory: The Lab. of SSU is a unique one. The lab. is operated beyond the scheduled hours
to make the "learning while doing" a holistic process. It is built to impart both pedagogical and
technical training to contemporary science students and is, therefore, equipped with several
sophisticated experimental set-ups (both PC and non-PC based), high-end computational & data
analysis software (Origin), DAQ, and PCs. All PCs are connected with high-speed internet. Many
of the experimental set-ups are imported from USA/Germany (Pasco/3B scientific). Several
experimental set-ups such (a) Newton's laws of motion (velocity, acceleration, momentum,
conservation of energy/momentum), (b) Static and Kinetic friction, (c) Acceleration due to
gravity, (d) Centripetal force, (e) Rollercoaster, (f) Projectile motion, and (g) Spring-mass system

with various springs and masses, (h) Dielectric constant, (i) Faraday’s law, (j) electronics, and
many more are available in the laboratory to train the students.
