St John’s Primary School was established in 1967 to serve the educational needs of catholic families in the Frankston East area. Over many years of local community support the school’s site was developed to accommodate buildings and facilities that provided quality programs and fostered the full and balanced development of each child. Currently there are 10 grades with 28 teaching and non-teaching staff who are highly skilled and dedicated to the ethos of Catholic education. Co-operation, respect and shared responsibility are values fostered through-out our school. St. John’s recognizes the partnership between parents and the school and we encourage participation in classroom programs, excursions, inter-school sport and parent committees and social events held across the year. As a catholic school we are committed to an education that is centred on the Gospel message of Christ. We work in unison with our Parish leaders and parents in promoting values and ideas that are central to our Christian beliefs. Our current policies and programs are constantly monitored and evaluated in light of changing needs and our staff have an ongoing commitment to excellence in education. I look forward to meeting with you in the future to discuss and expand upon the many qualities and features of St. John’s school. Paul Hartin Principal

The learning environment is supportive and productive Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning in an environment that is based on co-operation and mutual support. Teachers build positive relationships with children. They praise effort, contribution and student inquiry. Children are encouraged to take risks in their learning within a stimulating, engaging and safe setting. They respect both themselves and others by displaying an acceptance of individual differences.

The learning environment promotes independence, interdependence and self motivation

Children work collaboratively on tasks and projects in an atmosphere of cooperation, with a fo-cus on meaningful learning. We provide children with opportunities to become independent and self-motivated learners, who are able to think creatively about the world in which they live.

Students' needs, backgrounds, perspectives and interests are reflected in the learning program

Children are actively encouraged to participate in a range of meaningful learning activities that are designed to cater for their individual needs and assist them in reaching their full potential. We provide stimulating classroom environments that generate active interest in topics and utilise classroom strategies and programs that acknowledge gender, individual learning styles and personal and religious differences. The importance of family in each child’s education is strongly recognised at St John’s and we ensure that every effort is made to involve, support and inform families in an effective manner. We also value the diverse experiences and family backgrounds that children bring to the school environment.

Students are challenged and supported to develop deep levels of thinking and application

Our students are challenged and supported to develop higher order, flexible thinking. Teachers at St John’s have high expectations of achievement with an emphasis on quality teaching and learning. Inquiry-based strategies are implemented in order to develop creative thinking, investi-gative and problem-solving skills that can be applied across the curriculum. Students are pro-vided with learning experiences that encourage them to explore, question and engage with top-ics. Connections to life outside school are fostered in order to highlight learning as meaningful in a real-life context.

Assessment practices are an integral part of teaching and learning Evidence and data from assessment informs and drives future learning experiences whilst a va-riety of methods of reporting are used. Student learning is continually monitored and recorded. Teachers recognise the importance of students receiving frequent constructive feedback that supports further learning. Our assessment practices encourage reflection and self assessment by students. Assessment tasks are appropriately modified to cater for a range of abilities.

Learning connects strongly with communities and practice beyond the classroom

At St John’s, we recognise that learning needs to connect with the lives of students within the context of the local and broader community. Our school strives to maintain ties with the St John’s Parish community.

The Religious Education Program at St. John's is based on the Religious Education Curriculum Framework as developed by the Melbourne Catholic Archdiocese. Through our program we endeavour to -

- enable our children to discover the presence of God in (a) the events of their lives (b) their relationships with other people (c) their world (d) their faith community

- awaken and encourage in our children a personal relationship

through Jesus with our loving and compassionate God, and to re-spond to Him in prayer, celebration and service.

- teach our children the knowledge, attitudes and values necessary in their development as Christians.

As we acknowledge that Religious Education. is a synthesis of the faith and life of all members of our school community (children, parents, staff, Parish Priest and parishioners ), we endeavour to ensure that all are informed and involved, to varying degrees, in the faith development of our children. School Liturgy: Every First Friday at 9am and on special Feast Days throughout the year, the whole school joins in the celebration of the Eucha-rist. Individual classes are responsible for preparing the Liturgy and leading the school community in the celebration. Parents are always invited and welcome to participate.

10

Participation in the life of the Parish is an important part of your child's faith development. Families are invited to celebrate with the Parish community at any of the following times. Mass Times: Weekend Masses Saturday 7.00p.m. Sunday 8.30a.m. and 10.00a.m. Weekday Masses Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 9.00a.m. & Tuesday 7.30p.m. Rosary: Monday and Saturday after 9.00a.m. Mass Reconciliation: Saturday 9.30a.m. – 11.00a.m. and 6.15p.m. – 6.45p.m. Exposition of Blessed Sacrament: First Fridays except school holidays 9.30a.m. – 11.20a.m. Assemblies and Prayer Services: The liturgical seasons of the year e.g. Advent and Lent are highlighted at special assemblies and prayer services. These form part of the Religious Education Curriculum and are opportunities for members of the school community to pray together and share their life of faith.

11

At St John’s we strive for mutual respect, courtesy and care in order to create a welcoming, happy and secure environment. Our educational program is implemented in a safe supportive manner that ensures that children reach their full potential. Therefore, we seek to develop a responsible attitude in each child towards: - self - others - their own property - the property of others Bullying in any form is not tolerated and students are made aware of consequences of their actions. All staff members encourage and consistently reinforce co-operative and thoughtful behaviour. As part of our Pastoral Care Program all children have a buddy from another grade level. The purpose of this program is to provide the opportunity for children to develop their sense of responsibility and their awareness of the needs of others. Junior children, by having a special buddy, become more able to relate to the older children without being intimidated by them. They feel more secure in the school situation and are greatly enriched by the positive interaction with their buddy. There are a variety of activities that buddy grades share: - sharing and reading stories, poems, etc. - special class activities e.g. family week, maths activities, art activities etc. - sitting together at Mass and assembly - special lunch times, afternoon teas and end of year celebrations. The program encourages friendly, caring and thoughtful interaction between seniors and juniors, both during timetabled activities and recreation times on the playground.

12

This learning area is concerned with the development of: reading, writing and speaking and listening. The Literacy program at St. John’s provides engaging and purposeful learning opportunities. These opportunities are designed to cater for the individual needs of all students. Literacy is taught on a daily basis during a two hour block. Students participate in whole class, group and individual activities. Students access a wide range of written and spoken texts in print and electronic forms. Parents are invited to participate in Literacy training. This training enables parents to assist during the Literacy block. Literacy skills are reinforced through homework activities and regular home reading.

13

In mathematics, children’s learning focuses on the areas of, number, measurement, space, chance and data, working mathematically, and structure. Mathematics is taught on a daily basis with the emphasis on developing in our children a positive attitude and knowledge of mathematics. They are made aware of the role mathematics plays in our everyday life, for example, telling the time, using money, and measurement. Through a range of teaching approaches, children engage in activities involving the use of a variety of concrete materials and technologies. Children are actively involved in whole class, group and independent investigations to attain and re-enforce mathematical concepts. Mathematical skills and concepts are taught through problem solving situa-tions, in which children develop a range of strategies to make the learning process more meaningful. Through regular practise and homework tasks these skills and concepts are reinforced. Students are provided with knowledge, skills and opportunities to understand and practise what it means to be a citizen in a democracy. At St. John's Civics and Citizenship is taught bi-annually according to the Victorian Education Learning Standards, commencing at Prep and progress-ing through to grade 6. The approach used includes acquisition of knowledge; and the development of research, critical thinking, co-operative participation, clarification of values, presentation, communication, and decision making skills.

14

Physical Education and Sport are components of the curriculum at St. Johns. The students have many opportunities to be involved in physical activity throughout their time at St John’s. St John’s sports uniform is worn on your child’s P.E lesson days and at other sporting events as required. Some of the activities your child will be involved in are as follows: • Bike Education - Year 4 to 6 during term 3 • Swimming Program — Prep to 4 during term 4 • Football Clinics • Basketball Clinics • Skip-a-thon — Prep to 6 during term 3 • District cross country and athletics —Year 3 to 6 • District swimming • Inter school sport—Year 5 to 6 during terms 2 and 3 • Grade cricket/football matches throughout the year • St John’s Basketball Club—played on a Saturday morning • St John’s sports day • Weekly Physical Education Class— timetabled for Prep to 6

The science curriculum at St. Johns encourages students to identify, classify, describe, explain and analyse. Science provides students with the opportunity to make decisions about their learning, develops ideas, knowledge, skills and attitudes. It encourages an enthusiasm for learning and develops an understanding and appreciation of our natural world. The opportunity exists for our students to be involved with the local Catholic cluster schools and John Paul College.

15

Art and Craft at St. John's aims to develop the child's creativity, educate him/her for recreation, encourage appreciation of art and create an interest and love in the child for all things beautiful. Art/Craft is integrated throughout the entire curriculum. Music is an important element of our curriculum. Our program aims to encourage appreciation of and participation in all types of musical activities, so that children may extend their range of skills and interests; discover more about themselves and their abilities, and participate in and respond to a variety of music with confidence and enthusiasm. Musical elements are explored through the experiences of singing, listening, creating, playing, moving, reading and notating to provide an enjoyable and valid learning experience. Drama and Dance are mediums of expression which enhance personal development, self esteem, creativity, confidence and the ability to work constructively as a group towards a common goal. At St. John's many imaginative forms of role-play and movement are incorporated into the school curriculum and are experienced at all levels. Every second year our grade 5 and 6 children perform in a major production. LOTE is introduced throughout the curriculum and the Italian language and culture is taught to students once a week in Italian classes. LOTE is taught from Prep – 6.

16

The aims of the Library Program are to encourage a love of literature and fulfil staff and student information needs. Students have weekly library lessons where they are involved in learning information, research and study skills that will help them function independently in libraries and resource centres. All students are encouraged to appreciate literature and act responsibly with any resources that are borrowed. At St. John's we see computers as a powerful tool and aid to the learning process in all curriculum areas. Rather than teaching our children about computers, we endeavour to give them the opportunity to use computers in ways which enhance their education, and familiarise them with the technology in a practical "hands-on" way.

17

We encourage our children to value the wonders of creation, appreciation of others' creative work, and products of their own enterprise, endeavour and creativity. Therefore, children are encouraged to show and talk about things they have made themselves, favourite books, songs etc., natural wonders they have found, and so on. They are discouraged from bringing expensive toys. Thus we hope to emphasise the importance of each and every person rather than their possessions.

Homework is given in all grades from Monday through to Thursday. Generally the homework in Grades P and 1 is the nightly signed reading sheets. Grades 2 - 6 are given written and assignment work. In addition to set homework, daily reading is encouraged at all levels. Homework is to be signed by parents to communicate to the teacher that parents are aware of the standard being submitted. Please Note: Individual teachers, levels, etc. have particular expectations regarding homework. At the beginning of each year parents are informed re these expectations via information circulars, newsletters or interviews.

18

Excursions are an integral part of the school curriculum and are planned carefully with due consideration to cost. Consent forms are compulsory, as children cannot be taken out of the school grounds without parental permission. It is important that parents take careful note of departure and return times, particularly if trains are used. Normally school uniform is worn so that children can be identified more easily. Children not participating in the excursion are expected to attend school. If your child requires any medication, please ensure that both the medication and clear written instructions are given to the teacher in charge.

St Johns has a Prep to Grade 6 camp policy which consists of the following program:

• Prep & Grade 1 - Afternoon tea and games session following school.

• Grade 2 - Sleepover at school. • Grade 3 & 4 - Three day, two night camp. • Grade 5 & 6 - Held at the start of the school year – duration 4

days at an accredited camp.

Camp environment provides opportunity and further encouragement for children to consider others, work co-operatively and take responsibility both as part of a group and individually, when completing camp chores or partici-pating in the varied educational program provided by staff. School camps allow students to study first hand the natural phenomena and historical significance of the local area, providing a basis for work across the curriculum prior to, during camp and upon their return to school.

19

St John’s values and welcomes parental involvement at different levels. To foster the partnership between parents and school, we encourage your involvement in school programs such as English, Mathematics, Art, Library and Physical Education/Sport. School maintenance, the canteen, excursions and camps are also areas in which parents can assist. At the beginning of each school year, an option sheet is sent home where you can identify your areas of interest in assisting the school. It is now a Government requirement that parents who are involved in the school have a Working with Children Check. This form can be obtained from the School Office or your local Post Office. Each class has two parents who undertake the role of Hospitality Represen-tatives. They meet once a term as a group and liaise with the Classroom Teacher regularly, helping out with school events.

Committees Parents' & Friends' Auxillary (PFA) is an organisation with two main aims; to support the school, financially by raising vital funds and secondly to provide a social group to enable school families to meet and enjoy themselves. The PFA has an elected committee and its monthly meetings are open to all. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month. Maintenance Committee: An active group of parents that co-ordinate Building and Grounds improvement programs for St John’s that meet once a term to plan and discuss projects and Working Bees. Parish Education Board: The Parish Education Board meets once a month and aims to: (1) Act as a forum for discussion concerning education in our parish

schools. (2) Support the principal and staff of St John’s in the education of the

children and in the development of school policies. (3) Liaise with the local regional Catholic Secondary College - John Paul

College. (4) Support the faith development of parish children attending local

government schools.
