DIRECTORS BIO4
DIRECTORS STATEMENT
The story of Dede is based upon and dedicated to my grandmother’s real life experience. As such, itwas important to me to retain a palpable sense of authenticity and to show a community and a wayof life which has not been seen on film before. I worked with Svans (native peoples from the region),some of whom had no acting experience. They speak the native language, Svanish (a Georgian dialect, spoken by about 15, 000 people in thatarea of Georgia), and live in the harsh, remote but astoundingly beautiful Caucasian mountains.Working with local people in the place I was born has been integral in making the film that I wantedto make. It’s something of a paradise there, and this is the reason why the locals don’t leave thisplace, even though life can be difficult. And this is certainly the case for the character of Dina – she is a woman who finds her life dictatedby the weight of tradition, but who is deeply rooted in her community nonetheless.

1992. Dina lives in a remote village high in the Georgian mountains where century old traditions rule day to day life. Her grandfather has arranged for her to marry, but when handsome Gegi returns from war, she falls in love with him and they elope. Four years later Dina is estranged from her family but lives happily with her husband and young child. Then Gegi is tragically killed.
In traditional Svaneti culture a widow must marry the first man who asks for her hand, Girshel proposes and she must accept. Gegi’s family claim his child. So Dina must leave her home and little boy behind forever. She cannot forgive – until later that winter when Girshel saves her child’s life. For the third time Dina must fight tradition but this time, together with Girshel, she takes her child back.
