BlackBerry Bold
Your new BlackBerry Bold has many useful features. One of those features allows you
to tether your BlackBerry to your laptop via the USB cable and use it as your wireless card to obtain Internet access. While tethered, you can receive and make phone calls without interruption of your Internet activity. Also, the phone battery will charge while tethered.
We have tested the Bold devices extensively. Most users have found that the Bold in tethered mode is faster and easier than using an AirCard.
The instructions in this Quick Card will help you set up a BlackBerry Bold device in tethered mode. If you have any ques-tions or problems with tethering, you can submit a trouble ticket in ServiceNow. Note that tethering will only work if you have a data plan that supports it.
The first time you tether:1. Print out these instructions for easier reference. Then, exit
all applications.
2. Make sure your Bold is not already connected to your PC.
3. If you already have the AT&T Communication Manager installed, launch it and verify it is version 6.9 (or newer).
a. Select Help, click About Communication Manager to see the version you have installed. Close the AT&T Communication Manager.
4. If you already have the BlackBerry Desktop Manager in-stalled, launch it and verify it is version 4.3 (or newer). Once launched, the version # should be displayed at the bottom left corner of the screen. Close the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
5. If either AT&T Communication Manager or BlackBerry Desktop Manager is not installed or at the proper version, submit a ticket to IT using ServiceNow and request installa-tion. Once installed, you can proceed to the next step.
6. Connect the Bold to your laptop via the USB cable (see Figure A).
7. Wait a few minutes to allow the laptop to automatically discover and configure the new device. You will see confir-mation messages in the bottom right corner of your laptop screen.
8. Once you see the message that the device is ready to use, launch the AT&T Communication Manager.
9. You will see a message Initializing please wait. (The first time may take a few minutes. Future initializations will be faster.)
10. When you see the Ready to Connect prompt, click Connect.
11. Once connected, go to Tools, Settings, Acceleration and choose High. Doing so will give you the best performance possible. (See the Troubleshooting section of this card if you are using VPN while tethered.)
12. Begin using the Internet.
After the first time you tether:1. Connect the Bold via the USB cable (see Figure A).
2. Launch the AT&T Communication Manager.
3. When you see the Ready to Connect prompt, click Connect.
4. Begin using the Internet.
