SJSM St. Vincent AMSA MembersPresented at the 22nd AnnualProject, Research, and ExperienceExhibitionOn Friday, February 24th, two research teams from SJSM St. Vincent presented their findings at the 22nd
Annual American Medical Student Association’s Project, Research, and Experience Exhibition at the Hyatt
Regency Crystal City in Washington, DC. Ahmad Hamade, Mashood Abbasi and Simran Gill presented their
poster, “Efficacy of Ketogenic Diet Effects and its Clinical Applications”; Sharjeel Qureshi and Chloe Waters
presented their poster, “Analysis of Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption as High Risk Factors for Cancer
Prevalence in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.” Dr. Rana Zeine, SJSM Associate Professor and Science Day
Coordinator, served as mentor for both teams and provided unrelenting support for each team's success.
The teams used their Science Day research as a chance to inspire colleagues and fellow physicians-in-
training, as well as receive valuable feedback which can be incorporated into the ongoing evaluation and
execution of their current and future research endeavors.
Research as a physician-in-training is valuable as it sets the foundation for implementing skills and tools that
support evidence-based medicine. The research opportunity at SJSM St. Vincent is preparing students not only
for the competitive match of residency, but also preparing them to meet the immediate needs of their patients
and future needs of the community.
CAAM-HP WorkshopBy Joseph Chavez
In March 2017, a contingent of SJSM representatives attended the
CAAM-HP Capacity Building Workshop. More than 30 CARICOM
medical schools also attended the workshop. Presentations were
made by representatives from the CAAM-HP, GMC, WFME,
ECFMG and a group of Caribbean medical students who are also
going through the accreditation process at their respective schools.
The workshop concluded with all of the attendees breaking into
groups and discussing case studies to create a better understanding
of the processes that accrediting bodies like CAAM-HP have to go
through. Maintaining and advancing accreditation is a vital and never-
ending process to which SJSM is actively committed.

POLICY UPDATES
Fall 2017 ChangesIn an effort to improve our program and outcomes, Saint James' Academic Council has approved several
curriculum changes that will take effect in Fall 2017:
AICM will no longer be offered, and it will be replaced by semester 5 on the island.
Effective September 1st, any student that wants to be certified for the USMLE Step 2 CK will
be required to complete all six core rotations before being allowed to take the NBME Clinical
Science Comprehensive Examination.
The Pharmacology course will move to semester 5 and the Epidemiology course will move
to semester 3.
AnguillaResidencyPermit FeeUpdateFrom the Summer 2017 semester forward, the $600
residency permit fee, required for students to legally
reside in Anguilla for their studies, will be added to all
new students' first semester tuition invoices. Please
note that the Anguilla Residency permit fee is non-
refundable once the immigration application has been
submitted for processing. This only applies to students
who will be attending SJSM Anguilla.
Course DropPolicyThe Saint James School of Medicine Curriculum
Committee recently approved a Course Drop policy
which allows students to drop a course during the
semester with little to no impact on their overall
academic performance. A copy of the policy can be
found in the new 2017 Student Catalog which is
published on the school’s website. In order to drop a
course, the form, found in the Resources-Downloads
section of the website, must be completed and
submitted to the Dean of Basic Sciences.
Clinical Rotation CancellationPolicyDuring the MD program, students are required to complete 80 weeks of Clinical Science. The 80 weeks are to
be completed as 48 weeks of core rotations and 32 weeks of elective rotations in SJSM’s affiliated clinical
facilities. Students must contact the Clinical Department in order to be scheduled and placed in clinical
rotations. Certain documents are necessary for this process and need to be sent to the Clinical Department.
When all or some of these documents are received, the Clinical Department will schedule the student for the
rotation, and notify the hospital and the student of the precise start date.
Cancellation
Rotation slots in US hospitals are highly competitive. As such, canceling a scheduled rotation will result in one
of the following outcomes:
If a student cancels/reschedules a rotation for any reason within nine weeks of the start
date of the rotation, a rotation cancellation fee of $500 will be issued plus any third party
fees resulting from the cancellation. In certain exceptional cases, a student may
cancel/reschedule a rotation up to nine weeks before the start of rotation if they provide a
valid reason (sickness, death in the family, etc) that is approved by the Clinical Department.
It is at the discretion of SJSM to determine and approve the validity of the reason for
cancellation. If not approved, a rotation cancellation fee of $500 will be charged.
In the event that the student cancels/reschedules the rotation with more than nine
weeks notice with approval of the Clinical Department, a fee of $250 will be charged to the
student’s account.
