KETOGENICTHE

DIET

Learn more about . . .

A special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that

may help control seizures in some people with epilepsy.

Requiring careful measurements of calories,

fluids and proteins, it is prescribed by a

physician and monitored by a dietitian.

WHAT IS THE KETOGENIC DIET?

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

The body usually uses carbohydrates (e.g., sugar,

bread, pasta) for fuel. Since the ketogenic diet is very

low in carbs, fats become the primary fuel

instead.

One of many theories for how the diet may decrease

seizures is that ketones have a direct

anticonvulsant effect in the brain.

FOR WHOM DOES IT WORK BEST?

Doctors usually recommend the diet for children

whose seizures are resistant to medicine,

particularly for children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

It’s typically not prescribed to adults, as restrictive

food choices make it hard to follow. However,

a modified Atkins diet can be used to

successfully achieve the same effect.

FRUCTOSE & GRAINS

"ketogenic" means it

produces “ketones” in the body.

(keto = ketone, genic = producing)

A “ketone” is an organic compound containing a

carbonyl group =C=O bonded to two hydrocarbon groups,

made by oxidizing secondary alcohols.
