The ParaGames

Paul MenninkHead Coach of the Dutch National Electric Wheelchairhockeyteam

On behalf of the Dutch National Hockey Association (KNHB), I would like to welcome all players, officials, participants and spectators to the ParaGames in Breda.Specially, a warm word of welcome to our Finnish guests.

During the ParaGames, the Dutch National Electric Wheelchairhockeyteam will play a Two Nationscup against Finland, bronze medalist on the European Championships in 2012, Nastola, Finland. For both teams it’s the first official tournament since the new classifications rules are applicable. In short, all players are classified depending their ability in four categories numbered 1 to 4. During the game a maximum of 11 points are allowed on the playing field. The classification gives a new dimension to the game and is an opportunity for new players to participate on the international level.

For those who’re interested in some more background information regarding Electric Wheelchair Hockey, see www.icehw.org.

I’m looking forward to see you in Breda on October 12 & 13!

The ParaGamesElectric Wheelchair HockeyA fast and exciting team sport, to play and to watch!

The game, athletes and equipmentElectric Wheelchair Hockey (EWH) is a fantastic sport for people, who use an electric wheelchair in their daily life or who need an electric wheelchair to participate in a team sport. The game is played five against five, on an indoor playing field, surrounded by boundaries with round corners. The goals are placed in the field, so that the players can drive around and the game keeps running. In combination with the speed of the electric wheelchairs and the great skills of the players it makes the sport very fast, and very exciting to play and to watch!

Four field players and a goalkeeper are on the playing field during a match. A team may have five substitute players. Many players play with light weighted Floorball sticks, as the players don’t have that much strength in the hands/arms, because of their severe disabilities. Other players play with a so-called ‘T-Stick’, a T shaped stick attached to the wheelchair of players who are not able to hold the stick in the hand, because of the limited muscle power. The goalkeeper and at least one field player must play with a T-Stick. The game is played with a light weighted ball, as used in Floorball.

Movement and speed (max. 15 km/h) on the field is a central aspect of the game. The athletes train and play a lot to become very skillful with their wheelchair, stick and ball. From a tactical perspective, tactics, such as screen setting, passing and other offence and defense playing systems from many other ball sports, are used in Electric Wheelchair Hockey. Criteria for the severity of functional impairments (”classification”, “minimal disabilities” and “players eligibility”) need to be met in order to be allowed to practice Electric Wheelchair Hockey. Players can use all their physical abilities in this sport. The sport is open for men and women of all ages.

The international movement. From the 1970’s in different places around the world, independent from each other, people with severe disabilities started to play a game with a ball and a stick. In Germany and the Netherlands it was named “Hockey”, related to Field Hockey, while Finland spoke about “Floorball”. In Canada and the USA the sport was named “Power Hockey”, linked with Ice Hockey. In the 1980’s the first national and international competitions were organised. In 2002 the international movement started, organized by the IWAS Committee of Electric Wheelchair Hockey (ICEWH). Since 2005 this committee is a sport section of the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS), the formal founder of the Paralympic Games. Every two years Sport Assemblies are held where international game rules, regulations and policy are approved by the participating EWH-nations. People can play in their own electric wheelchair, although electric wheelchair manufacturers have developed special electric sports wheelchairs, which are professional, sportive and fast.

The dream is to become a Paralympic Sport!
