Information for Submitting Articles to Law Reviews & Journals_____

July 2014The following are two charts useful for the law review/journal article submission process. The firstchart contains information gathered from the journals websites about the following topics:

Methods for submitting an article (such as by e-mail, ExpressO, or regular mail); Any special formatting requirements; How to request an expedited review; and How to withdraw an article after it has been accepted for publication elsewhere.

The second chart contains some information about rankings of the journals and the law schoolsassociated with them. The first three columns are the overall ranking, academic/peer assessment score, and lawyer/judge assessment score for each school from the most recent U.S. News & World Reportrankings. The other three columns are data about each journal from Washington & Lees law reviewranking website. The citation ranking is the total number of citations to the journal over the pasteight years. The impact factor is the number of citations per article per year. The combined ratingis a weighted combination of the total citations and impact factor rankings. You can find more detailedinformation about this data on the Washington & Lee website at http://lawlib.wlu.edu/LJ.We hope this information is helpful. We provide it with several important caveats:

o First, the charts cover only each schools general law review, not specialized journals.Obviously there are excellent specialized journals on many topics. Anyone submitting anarticle to law reviews will want to consider the specialized journals relevant to their article andparticular area of expertise.

o The charts cover 203 schools and their journals. We have tried to be comprehensive; anyomissions are inadvertent, and wed be happy to hear what we missed so that we can add them.

o We do not mean to imply anything about how much importance, if any, should be given tonumerical rankings of law schools or law journals. These sorts of rankings are certainly anincomplete, if not badly flawed, way of evaluating schools and journals. We provide theranking information because it is something that many people consider to some extent in thesubmission process. Obviously each author can decide what to make of it.

Weve also posted a list of links to the submissions information on each law journals website. Thatlist can be found at http://www1.law.umkc.edu/Faculty/rostron/law_review_submission.htm.For a helpful and more detailed discussion of the submission process and related issues for lawprofessors, see Nancy Levit, Scholarship Advice for New Law Professors in the Electronic Age,16 Widener L.J. 947 (2007), at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=939007.
