  • Furca The soldier's kit was tied to the two poles of the furca and carried over his right shoulder.

    Loculus

    The loculus or satchel is made from goatskin and coated with oil to make it waterproof.

  • Leather bottle The bottle would have been used to carry water and sour wine. The sour wine would kill any germs in the water making it safe it drink.

    Rope The rope would have many uses such as in building, making shelters and tying prisoners up.

  • Net bag It is not known what the net bag was used for. It might have been used for carrying food or wet clothing or even to catch fish or hunt animals.

    Languncula The languncula is made from iron and bronze. It might have been used to carry oil or water. The inside smells of honey as it is lined with beeswax to stop the iron rusting.

  • Dolabra The dolabra is a pick axe. It could be used for chopping wood and digging. It is not a weapon for fighting. It is decorated with a brass blade cover.

    Patera

    The patera could be used as a pan to cook food and as a bowl to eat out.

  • Situla The situla would be used as a cooking pot, as a bucket to carry water or as a basin so the soldier could wash and shave.

    Bag The bag is made from goatskin. It was used to carry the soldier’s clothing and other equipment.

  • Subligaculum The soldier’s underpants, worn in a similar way to a baby’s nappy.

    Towel The towel is made from a fabric called linen.

  • Tunic The soldier would carry a spare tunic. This one is made from linen, which is cooler, lighter and not too itchy but most were made from wool.

  • Cloak The soldier could use the cloak to keep warm and dry in bad weather. It could also be used as a blanket.

    Pouch of spares

    The pouch contain: a wool patch, linen thread and bronze needle for repairing clothes or stitching wounds; hobnails for repairing sandals; hook and line for fishing and spare leather throng for armour and other uses.

  • Firelighting set Contents: striker, flint, tinder The striker was used to hit the flint to make a spark. The spark set the tinder alight.

    Sickle The sickle was used for harvesting seasonal crops such as wheat.

  • Hand saw The saw could be used to cut wood.

    Leather strap The strap could be used for lots of different jobs such as lifting grass turfs or logs and binding items.

  • Oil flask The soldier could use the oil for cooking food, cleaning his skin, polishing his armour or for burning in lamps.

    Knife

    A general purpose knife that could be used in lots of different ways — for preparing food and perhaps even for shaving!

  • Bag of grain The soldier would have to carry enough grain to last for three days. The grain could be made into stews, porridge, bread or baked into biscuits called bucatellum or hard tack.

    Cup The cup is made of wood to avoid breakages.

  • Wooden spoon The spoon would be used when cooking and eating food.

    Pouch The pouch holds the soldier’s personal items. Money to buy food or beer Dice to play gambling games Statuette of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom Brooches for fastening clothes

  • Dried beef The beef could be added to stews.

    Bucatellum The bucatellum or hard tack was made from wheat. It could be eaten as a biscuit or used to thicken stews.

  • Letter from home The letter has been written with ink made from soot. The writing tablet is made from birch wood. (The text is paraphrased from a find at Vindolanda on Hadrian’s Wall).

    Bag of ground pumice The ground pumice would be mixed with oil and used to polish the soldier’s armour.
