ARCHERY AUSTRALIA The sport of archery was introduced to Australia by the European settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries and is known to have been a flourishing social activity in the mid 1800’s. However, it wasn't until the late 1930s that archery was organised on an Australia-‐wide basis and first proposed by Dudley Preston, a leading archer in Western Australia. After an enforced interruption due to the Second World War, his proposal came to fruition at a conference of State delegates held in Sydney on 17-‐18 January, 1948. After the normal preliminaries, the first major item on the agenda was the motion that:
"The Archery Association of Australia be and is hereby formed." This motion was carried and therefore has to be regarded as the official date of birth of the Association. The meeting went on to consider matters of national and international associations and competitions, including a resolution to affiliate with FITA the International Archery Federation. The first Annual General Meeting of the Association was held in Sydney on the same weekend as the first National Championships -‐ 3, 4 and 5 October 1948. In 1993, the Archery Association of Australia changed its name to Archery Australia. The Association was for many years governed by a Board comprised of eight societies (Archery Society of NSW, Archery ACT, Archery Victoria, Archery Society of Tasmania, Archery South Australia, Archery Society of Western Australia, Archery Society of North Queensland and Archery Society of South Queensland). The day to day affairs of the association were managed by a part time Executive Committee. In 2001 the Board dramatically changed the constitution, allowing for a more streamlined modern structure following Best Practice Governance Principles. The Archery Australia Board now comprises of four elected and up to three appointed Board members. The day to day affairs of the association are managed by a full time Chief Executive Officer. Annually Archery Australia conducts National Championships -‐ Junior National Championships (Target Field and Clout), National Championships (Target, Field, Clout) in Open, Master and Veteran categories and Indoor National Championships. A wide variety of disciplines and equipment styles are catered for during National Championships. In 2008 Archery Australia introduced a new event “The Australian Open” which is an event modelled on the Olympic Games and World Championship Match Play Formats. This event is also open to any archer worldwide to enter and win. Australia first entered International Competition at the FITA World Target Championships in 1965 and its first international medals were won by Graeme Telford and Hans Wright in 1969 (bronze medals in the Target and Field Championships respectively). Australia was represented when Archery re-‐entered the Olympics in Munich in 1972 and has been represented at each Olympic Games since. Australia hosted the 29th FITA Target World Championships in Canberra in 1977 and the 34th FITA World Target Championships in Adelaide in 1987. In Adelaide the Grand FITA event was introduced, which was the first attempt at a progressive elimination competition and the forerunner of the current Match Play event conducted at National Championships, World Championships and Olympic Games. In 2002 the FITA World Field Championships were conducted in Canberra. For a full list of Archery Australia medal winners go to the Archery Australia website www.archery.org.au and look under Hall of Fame

How is Archery Australia Funded?
Archery Australia is funded from individual subscriptions paid annually. These funds are used to manage the day-‐to-‐day operation of the sport. Without such income the sport could not operate and archery and the interests of its members could not be represented to government and the sporting industry. The High Performance Program is partly funded from annual subscriptions although the majority of funding comes from the sponsorship of the Australian Sports Commission. Archery Australia principal sponsor. Australian Sports Commission
RGB Throughout this booklet you will have noticed the term RGB. It stands for Recognised Governing Body which is the regional divisions of Archery Australia although some people refer to it as Regional Governing Body.
Members Information 2012/13 Page 5
In short it relates to the eight state governing bodies that make up Archery Australia. It was identified some time ago that the term “state body” was not appropriate such as with North and South Queensland in particular as South Queensland extends into northern NSW so RGB is used. Each RGB have an elected Committee of Management who manage the day to day affairs of the sport at a local level as well as conduct tournaments and carry out activities and programs for the growth and development of the sport in their state. Importantly the RGB is the channel of communications with clubs and individual members. REGISTRATION FEES Each year you pay fees to your club, you should be fully aware of how these fees are distributed. The fee you pay is split between your Club, RGB and Archery Australia. The club component, which is usually the majority of the fee, is used to manage the day-‐to-‐day operations of your club. The club sends a portion of your fees to the RGB; the RGB retains their portion of the fees and then sends the remainder onto Archery Australia unless of course if you have paid by Credit Card (through IMG) where the payments are split automatically, this fee formally registers you with the RGB and Archery Australia Inc. The RGB component of the fees is used to manage the day-‐to-‐day affairs of the RGB as well as carry out activities and programs, for the growth and development of the sport in the state. Importantly the RGB is the channel of communications between Archery Australia, clubs and individual members. The Archery Australia component of the fee is used to manage the sport as detailed in the previous section. Archery Australia is affiliated to a number of International Oganisations
World Archery (formerly known as FITA) Oceania Archery Confederation Australian Olympic Committee Australian Commonwealth Games Association Australian Paralympic Committee Asian Archery Federation World Crossbow Shooters Association Australian Archery Hall of Fame
ARCHERY AUSTRALIA BOARD
The National level of Archery Australia is managed by a Board who are elected every 4 years by the members (RGBs). The Board can also appoint up to 3 other members.
ARCHERY AUSTRALIA OFFICE Archery Australia maintains a national office in Sydney, which carries out day-‐to-‐day administration activities dealing with RGBs, Clubs, sponsors, government and corporate organisations, World Archery and other international archery organisations as well as the general public and media. All correspondence to Archery Australia should be sent to –
P.O. Box 54, Panania NSW 2213 Email [email protected] Phone 02 9772 2995 Fax 02 9772 2749
COMMUNICATIONS
Communications is a major issue and it’s very difficult to keep everyone informed and up to date. In the past communications has been through the RGBs, this will continue but information is also sent direct to clubs to speed up the process and reduce the administrative burden for RGBs.
Members Information 2012/13 Page 6
It is hoped each club will have a system in place that allows them to pass on such information direct to individual members, check with your club to ensure they have a system in place. Many clubs have set up internal email communications with members as well as a Notice Board at the club. Most information is also posted on the Archery Australia website www.archery.org.au under ‘What’s New”. We have also started up an Archery Australia Facebook page. We have found Facebook to be an easy and effective way of communicating with a large number of people. The Facebook page is intended to be a line of communications with members and anyone interested in Archery, it is not intended as a facility where people can chat and make personal posts. For this reason we do not accept people as friends. Facebook is simple and easy to use and very safe and secure despite the news reports about privacy issues, this only happens when you allow your personal information to be made public. In particular to ensure you obtain the latest communications from Archery Australia, your RGB and Club your email address should be up to date in the database, you will then receive regular communications. NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP DATABASE This year Archery Australia has introduced a National Membership Database. The database is proved by and managed by IMG Sports Technology Group for Archery Australia and includes a Website, National Membership Database, Online Shop, Online Tournament Registration System and Online Tournament Entry System. This new database provides Archery Australia, RGBs and Clubs as well as individual members with the ability to manage they own details in an efficient and timely manner.
Clubs will provide their members with a Password and Login, which will enable them to login to the database to view and update their personal details. Using the login and password members will also be able to pay subscriptions online by Credit Card. This system makes it much easier and much quicker to pay fees.
Instead of the many months it used to take to receive a membership card or for new members a member number, which in the past was due to the long-‐winded manual system that was in place, cards can now be issued within approximately 5 days of the member being entered into the database.
If you have not been provided with a Login and Password or have not been offered the ability to pay your fees on line, contact your club to ensure they have set you up in the system.

ARCHERY AUSTRALIA 'S POSITION ON DOPING
Archery Australia condemns the use of performance enhancing drugs and doping practices in sport. The use of performance enhancing drugs and doping practices is contrary to the ethics of sport and potentially harmful to the health of Athletes. Archery Australia has developed an extensive Anti Doping Policy which has been approved by ASADA and the Australian Sports Commission; all members are expected to comply with the policy. A copy of the policy can be found on the Archery Australia website www.archery.org.au Athletes and their physicians must take every care to ensure that the therapeutic use or administration of substances does not contravene this policy. The only legitimate use of drugs in sport is under the supervision of a physician for a clinically justified purpose. Archery Australia aims to stop doping practices in sport by:
• Complying with ASADA, WADA, FITA and ASC anti doping policies • Educating and informing persons about drugs in sport issues, and • Supporting the drug testing programs and education initiatives of AUSTRALIAN SPORTS DRUG
AGENCY (ASADA) and other Drug Testing Authorities. For more information contact the Anti Doping Controller [email protected] or see the Archery Australia Anti Doping Policy on the Archery Australia website www.archery.org.au.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Each year Archery Australia conducts the National Youth Championships and National Championships as well as the Australia Open. These championships are hosted by local committees usually under the control of an RGB on behalf of Archery Australia. The National Youth Championships caters for all youth age divisions and equipment categories while the National Championships caters for Open, Masters and Veteran divisions and all equipment categories. The philosophy behind the Youth National Championships and the National Championships is an event for all, catering for all ages and equipment disciplines while maintaining the history of the sport by conducting Target, Field and Clout events. The Australia Open has a focus on elite competition catering for only Recurve and Compound archers only with events that are contested at World Championships and World Cup events. The Australian Open attracts elite archers from around the world and offers prize money as well as value in kind awards. Each year we have also conduct a separate National Crossbow Championships aimed at enhancing and grow this discipline.
Members Information 2012/13 Page 8
The National Indoor Championships is also conducted annually and is held in conjunction with the RGB State Indoor Championships. As shooting conditions for indoor can be controlled this enables us to conduct an event in many locations allowing many hundreds to compete and be involved. NATIONAL TEAMS Each year Archery Australia supports teams to International Events. Due to funding limitations teams are usually self funded, although we do provide financial support with entry fees and uniforms. The Australian Sports Commission through our High Performance Sponsorship, provides funding support for archers attending major events such as World Championships and World Cup events. We have clear guidelines on team selection both for World Championships and Non World Championship events these can be found on the Archery Australia website www.archery.org.au in the Policy and Procedures section. Teams to major events such as World Championships and Olympic Games are selected following a selection process. For minor events such as the Oceania Championships and Trans Tasman, selection is based on either specific selection procedures or the Non World Championship selection procedure. AUSTRALIAN and NATIONAL RECORDS Archery Australia maintains an extensive list of Australian Tournament and National Championship Records. Australian records are records shot by members in registered tournaments while National records are shot at National Championships. Archery Australia also operates National Ranking Lists; these lists can be viewed on the Archery Australia website www.archery.org.au To provide greater opportunities for archers to shoot qualifying and ranking scores as well as shoot regularly in competitions which will assist in improving and raising the standard of archers, Archery Australia allows clubs and RGBs to conduct QRE tournaments. You can also claim Australian records at QRE tournaments as long as the event is under the control of an AA Judge. Scores shot at FITA registered tournaments anywhere in the world can also be submitted for qualifying and ranking purposes.
TOURNAMENTS AND CLUB EVENTS
RGBs and Clubs conduct regular tournaments and events catering for all divisions, genders and abilities. Most clubs on a weekly basis conduct regular club shoots and activities again catering for all divisions, genders and abilities. Ask your club about their calendar of activities and events and improve your performance and enjoyment of the sport by claiming awards by getting involved with these activities.
QUALIFYING and RANKING EVENTS (QRE) Archery Australia operates a number of National Ranking Lists as well as providing funding support for elite archers who maintain high performance standards. Archers seeking selection into National Teams need to shoot the necessary minimum qualifying scores (MQS) to be eligible. These MQS’s can only be shot in tournaments. QRE’s have been developed to provide archers with additional opportunities to obtain these scores as well as provide additional competition training. QRE tournaments can be organised by clubs, RGB’s or approved organisations.
Members Information 2012/13 Page 9

QRE’s must be shot strictly to World Archery rules and any additional requirements noted in the guidelines. Ideally a Judge should be in attendance. There must be a minimum of 4 archers competing. Clubs and RGB’s are invited to apply to Archery Australia to conduct QRE’s and assist in growing and developing the sport, information can be found on the Archery Australia website or ask your RGB or contact the Archery Australia Ranking Coordinator, Lindsay Webb on [email protected] INSURANCE Archery Australia offers members, RGB’s and clubs a range of Group Insurance coverage, the fee for this insurance is covered by your Archery Australia registration fee.
