1. Around one in four New Zealanders are infected with influenza or ‘flu’ each year. Many won’t feel sick at all, but can still pass it on to others. Getting an influenza vaccination before winter offers you and others the best protection.

You can transmit influenza without knowing you are infected Results from the 2015 Southern Hemisphere Influenza and Vaccine Effectiveness, Research and Surveillance (SHIVERS) influenza research serosurvey showed that around 26% of people in NZ had contracted influenza over the 2015 season and 80% off those people were asymptomatic.

Influenza, “the flu”, can be anywhere. It is easy to catch through coughs and sneezes. Influenza is much worse than a cold.

Some people are more likely to get very sick when they have the flu. They are young children, babies, pregnant women and older people. Also, people with some illnesses like asthma or diabetes.

Some people with flu need to stay in hospital for a while. A few people die from flu.

Three important changes to communicate for 2018

• Influenza vaccination may be contraindicated or need to bedelayed for people receiving some new cancer treatments.

• The immune-stimulant actions of Atezolizumab, Ipilimumab,Nivolumab and Pembrolizumab on the immune system increasea person’s risk of developing autoimmune conditions.

• It is not known whether receipt of an influenza vaccine whilst receiving these treatments or for up to 6 months after treatment has ceased increases a theoretical risk of triggering the occurrence of these side effects.

• Contact the person’s oncologist or 0800 IMMUNE BEFORE administering the vaccine.

2. History of egg allergy or egg anaphylaxis

Studies have shown that influenza vaccines containing less than one microgram of ovalbumin do not trigger anaphylaxis in sensitive individuals.

The residual ovalbumin in one dose of INFLUVAC® TETRA or FLUARIX® TETRA is significantly below this limit so these vaccines can be safely administered to people with a history of egg allergy or egg anaphylaxis at general practices, pharmacies or at the workplace.

3. Co-administration of an influenza vaccine

Can be administered with other vaccines, such as Tdap, the zoster (shingles) vaccine, pneumococcal vaccines or the childhood National Immunisation Schedule vaccines.

Must be given at different injection sites.
