Note from Pastor: On this fourth Sunday of Lent we hear once again the parable of the prodigal son in our Gospel readings. This is one of the most well known and loved of all the scriptures. It speaks to us on a very deep level about God’s mercy and the need for us to learn to forgive one another from the heart. Forgiveness is an issue that most of us will struggle with or confront at some time in our lives. For some of us, it may be a project that takes years and decades. We pray the Lord’s prayer so often that we may forget that the call to forgiveness is right at the heart of the prayer that Jesus gave us: forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. I have a few thoughts about forgiveness from my experience in my own life and working with many over the years. First, we have to think about it as a process. We forgive deep hurts and pains over and over and over. If you are working on forgiveness, don’t worry if you aren’t completely “over” the past hurt. You are forgiving one step at a time. Second, “forgive and forget” is not a good combo. We don’t really ever forget when someone hurts us or someone we love. And we shouldn’t. We learn from our past and we adjust accordingly. If someone has not changed or repented from a harmful act or attitude, we remember so as not to be in the same vulnerable situation again. Third, forgiving ourselves can sometimes be the toughest part of all. Maybe we have apologized to someone we hurt, gone to confession, and done what we can to make amends. But a broken relationship or a guilty conscience reminds us over and over of what we did. When we have done what we need to do in apologizing and repenting, sometimes the evil one likes to step in and keep reminding us of our failures. It’s in that moment that we have to remind him, and ourselves, that we used to be in a different place, but by God’s grace we are not there anymore. Just like the wayward son in the Gospel today, the father’s mercy is not because of anything we have earned, but it’s because it’s his very nature to love and forgive. And thank God for that! --Fr. Andy
