Child (Age 1-8 Years) CPR
1. Make sure the scene is safe
2. Tap the child’s shoulder and shout,
“Are you okay?”
To protect both you and the victim, avoid contact with body substances or fluids, known as Body Substance Isolation (BSI), whenever possible. BSI procedures
assume that all body fluids are a possible risk; use gloves and/or breathing barriers, if available, and always wash your hands after care.

Breathing Tips
• Do not tilt head back too far to
avoid blocking airway
• If your mouth is too small to cover the
infant’s mouth and nose, put your mouth
over the infant’s nose while plugging
the infant’s mouth
Unit Three, Lesson Three - Infant and Child CPR Slide 17
Breathing Tips (cont.)
• If the breath does not go in, reopen
the airway (tilt head and lift chin)
before giving the second breath
• Stop breaths when you see the chest rise
and remove mouth so that the air expels
naturally from the lungs
Unit Three, Lesson Three - Infant and Child CPR Slide 18
Breathing Tips (cont.)
• Gasping is NOT breathing
• If infant/child vomits, clean out his or
her mouth with a clean cloth and/or
your finger and continue breaths
Unit Three, Lesson Three - Infant and Child CPR Slide 19
Compression Tips
• If possible, place the infant/child
on a surface above ground, such as
a table, to ease giving CPR
• Kneel at the victim’s side
Unit Three, Lesson Three - Infant and Child CPR Slide 20
Compression Tips (cont.)
• Make sure the victim is on his or
her back
• Push hard and fast (100 times per minute)
• Push straight down 1/3 to 1/2 the
depth of the chest (sternum only to avoid
breaking ribs)
Unit Three, Lesson Three - Infant and Child CPR Slide 21
Compression Tips (cont.)
• On a child, be sure to keep your
arms straight and your shoulders
above the victim’s heart
• If the child is large, use two hands for
compressions, placing one hand directly
on top of the other
Unit Three, Lesson Three - Infant and Child CPR Slide 22
Compression Tips (cont.)
• COUNT out loud (i.e., one and
two and three and…)
• Always keep skin-to-skin contact
