THE STORY OF A traVELLING LIFE

Ines De Leucio was born in Adelaide to an ltalian family that immigrated to Australia. Her family’s native land is Terranova Fossa Caeca situated in the province of Benevento.

In this ancient land, full of clay deposits, even the stones speak of old legends. Along the walls of the medieval village, the oral tradition recounts the mystery of a hidden treasure.

This is where Ines De Leucio’s creative and rebellious spirit developed thanks to the ancient tales narrated by her grandparents and by a few local centenarians. Ines gives form, in what we may define a creative hideout, to the legends that spoke about persons living on the edge of history and who have always been seen as unpleasant and subversive individuals.

Ines went back to Australia in 2012.

She states: “For a sensitive man it is impossible not to return to the piace where you were born, it’s impossible not to return to the place where you’ve lived. lt’s like being born twice. Your third life is the ancestral memory of your ancestors. Ori gin: there you will find everything.”

AN IMPOSSIBLE WOMAN

The little witch. The nose and lips drawn with sharp lines represent the figure and the signature of Ines’ portrait. There’s only one large eye in all of her lovers, animals, martians and imaginary beings. At times the eye is seen as a spirai in order to emphasize a descriptive hypnosis for whom sees the world as an al legory reality. The witch is shown as a woman impossible to dominate or to hold down in a restricted environment. She is a modern and positive depiction of nature’s mysterious and nocturnal strength.

The purses are manufactured with materials selected by the customers and come with an owner’s manual. When we ask Ines: “What’s the name of that bird? Of that flower?” She answers the same way Braque would: “I don’t know. Ask the experts that know the names of things. I want an object to lose its normal purpose; in this way only art can grant its universal character.”

Work assigned by the city of Arpaise (Benevento) in 2010for the sanctuary of the holy martyrs Cosma and Damiano

located in Terranova F.C.The stoups are placed in the left nave on the sacred heart altar.

A third stoup, which completed the triptyche, was donated to the Arpaise community in New York

for the David Pope cultural foundation. Outside the sanctuary, there are two display cases paved with majolica tiles donated and assembled by the artist.

The tiles were realized in the workshop situated in Montesarchio (Benevento) where Ines worked from 1999 to 2003.

The figures of the saints Cosma and Damiano have always fascinated the artist.

These immigrants who came from Orient were miracle workers, “anargyroi (without money)”, protectors of the family, of healing herbs,

of surgery and of peace among people. Their lives and works have been studied for centuries.

According to a legend the saints appear in dreams whose aim is to heal and communicate. This is how Ines started her way towards

the lives of the two martyrs who, thanks to a recurring dream have been accompanying

her since her early childhood.
