PG Monitoring System AB and Wonderware Help Prevent Leaks in the City of Stockholm

Goals• To increase safety using a more effective

warning system to prevent leaks by detecting decomposition at an early stage

• To streamline the implementation phase for new projects

Challenges• Geographically dispersed PLCs and

continuous development of Stockholm’s district heating network require a high degree of flexibility and a comprehensive overview

• With approximately 10,000 I/Os, a system is required which provides operations personnel with information that is updated in real time

Solutions and Products• Wonderware® InTouch® HMI Software• ArchestrA® System Platform

Results• Thanks to a greater degree of insight, leaks

are avoided which would otherwise have cost anywhere between five thousand and several million euros

• Wonderware’s scalable software solutions mean that it only takes a few days to develop and configure the monitoring system in a new geographical area by reusing modules that communicate with the PLC units

• An improved overview and a wireless Geo SCADA system warn operations personnel of potential leaks within a minute rather than them performing manual checks a few times a year

Stockholm, Sweden — The City of Stockholm’s district heating network comprises 1,200 km of pipes that pump heat and warm water to a large proportion of Stockholm’s population in a resource-efficient way. The district heating network has been successively expanded and is part of the City of Stockholm’s plans to be fossil-free by 2050.

Due to the fact that PG Monitoring System AB offer complete monitoring systems for district heating networks, they were hired to install an advanced network monitoring system for Fortum Värme, a company co-owned by Stockholm’s stad AB. As PG Monitoring System AB work in large, geographically dispersed areas, they are experts in modern and wireless technology.

From Repairs to Prevention

Leaks in a city’s district heating network can have devastating consequences, both economic and social. In order to monitor these pipe networks and detect problems early, a system is required that is flexible and easy to expand as the network expands and also provides an immediate overview. Since 2002, PG Monitoring System AB have worked together with Fortum Värme to monitor the City of Stockholm’s district heating network.

PG Monitoring System AB first involved Wonderware in the monitoring of the City of Stockholm’s district heating network in 2005, when they installed Wonderware® InTouch® HMI Software in order to improve and simplify the user interface. As the monitoring system developed, so too did the need for updated information and, therefore, newer technology as part of a complete solution.

PG Monitoring System AB turned to Wonderware which, with their System Platform, could offer a SCADA solution that provided an overview of the approximately 500 PLC units that are specially designed to measure moisture in district heating systems. Wonderware’s SCADA solution was also adapted for use with a wireless GPRS network, which gave operations personnel even more freedom in their monitoring work. From manually checking the network a few times a year, the operations personnel are now alerted within a minute of a leak being detected in the new integrated system.

Håkan Klarin, CEO of PG Monitoring System AB, emphasizes how the new system has affected the monitoring of Stockholm’s district heating network:

“To begin with the new system was viewed as a way of cutting back on staff, but instead it has helped create a totally new way of thinking at most energy companies. By preventing problems and working with the maintenance of the pipes, they can detect and repair problems they never knew existed.”

Choosing the Right PartnerWhen PG Monitoring System AB took on the assignment of monitoring the City of Stockholm’s district heating network, they realized that they needed a complete and object-oriented solution which could be integrated with existing PLCs, measuring devices specifically designed to measure moisture in pipelines and new technology such as wireless solutions.

Fifteen moisture alarm units that monitors up to 4 km district heating pipes in each direction, a total of 8 km of pipes. Flow and return in two directions. Can send

different alarms from SCADA to SMS, pager, email, etc.

PG Monitoring System AB recommended Wonderware as it was able to offer scalable solutions which were compatible with those already in place. Wonderware® InTouch® HMI Software and ArchestrA System Platform are designed to provide a clear and immediate overview; they are user-friendly and increase safety by offering backups, among other features, allowing the system to be reset almost immediately in the event of a problem.

A Design to Build On

The City of Stockholm’s district heating network, just like the monitoring of its pipes, is developing at a very rapid pace. One of PG Monitoring System AB’s requirements was that Wonderware’s software solutions should be able to support this development and that it should be possible to quickly install additional modules and PLC units in the ever evolving monitoring system. Due to the fact that Wonderware’s solutions are object-oriented, basic programming modules can be reused and quickly support new instrumentation, which provides the freedom to develop and configure the monitoring system in a new geographical area almost immediately.

By integrating the solutions already in place with Wonderware’s solutions, and by developing this scalable system for use in Stockholm’s district heating network, PG Monitoring System AB have a ready-made system to hand, ideal for new projects too. The system allows new projects to get underway within a short space of time and means upgrades can be managed effectively.

Operating status of various devices in the field such as temperature, pressure and flow in the

network. Here the operators can see if there are operational and/or communication alarms.
