Complying with legislation
The Ecodesign Directive is already phasing out energy
inefficient lamps and gear as part of its EU-wide rules
for improving the environmental performance of energy
related products. The RoHS and REACH Directives also
restrict the use of certain hazardous substances. Our
planet-friendly alternatives can help you comply with all
three, improving the energy efficienc y of your building and
meeting, or even exceeding, new industry standards.
Green building certification
Our comprehensive portfolio of lighting solutions can
also help you to achieve green building certification. Many
of our staff are accredited professionals in Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or licensed
assessors in BRE Environmental Assessment Method
(BREEAM). We are also taking the lead by certifying our
own premises, including our Paris headquarters that is
Haut Qualité Environnementale (HQE) certified.
Upgrading makes adifferenceSustainability is an important business issue, not only to minimise environmental
mpact but also to conform to legislation, save on energy costs and improve your
green credentials. Upgrading your lighting installation is a quick and easy way
to significantly reduce your carbon footprint without affecting output. We can
help with a wide range of solutions that are already field-proven by the world’s
eading industrial operators.
Unlock the value of lighting
Whether you’re ready for a complete refurbishment or
just want a simple lamp replacement to save energy, we
have the right solutions for you. Our sustainable lighting
solutions can be as easy as uplamping to energy-saving
alternatives or as comprehensive as installing the latest
LED solutions with intelligent controls to maximise savings.
And with our turnkey services, including energy audits and
financing, improving your green credentials couldn’t be
simpler.

The results are clear
With better lighting performance can be improved
by speeding up tasks and reducing failure rates. It also
makes a positive contribution to safety and accident
rates, absenteeism and general health and well-being.
When industry workers were shown the statement
“Good lighting has an influence on my work”, the positive
response rate was extremely high with over 94% of
subjects asked responding positively *.
Effects of increased lighting levels
For example, research* shows that increasing light levels in
the metal industry from 30 0 lux to 2000 lux increases task
performance by 16% and reduces the number of rejects
by 29%. Productivity increased by about 8% and improved
lighting also showed a clear reduction in the number
of accidents by 52%. All of which could make a clear
difference to business, whatever your industry.
Effects of preferred illuminances at the task area
The latest research** shows that industrial workers
appreciate higher illuminancess that can be adjusted by
themselves: in field tests employers saw productivi ty
increases of up to 7.7%, while at the same time reducing
the energy consumption by applying dedicated energy-
conscious industrial lighting schemes.

Industrial lighting andproductivity Good lighting in the workplace with well-lit task areas is essential for optimising
visual performance, visual comfort and ambience, especially with an ageing
workforce. And the beneficial effects of good lighting extend much further than
t was originally thought. In fact, over the last two decades medical science has
consistently shown that light has a positive influence on health and well-being.

Safer for processes
At Philips we’re constantly looking for ways to improve
the safety of our lighting solutions. For areas where
contamination from lamp breakages could be disastrous,
closed luminaires and lamps with a protective coating
keep glass and lamp components together. We also
have waterproof luminaires to help you maintain a
clean and hygienic workplace. And our Electromagnetic
Compatibility Service will minimise the interference
that any lighting solutions you install will have with other
electric equipment.
Safer for people
When it comes to looking after your people, we’re just
as careful. Our design consultants can create a bespoke
lighting scheme that meets your exact requirements from
warehouse environments to production areas and staff
offices. We’ll tailor our solutions to optimise light levels
according to each task area. So you can be sure that your
staff have the right light levels to work efficiently and safely.
Our solutions respect all relevant norms and with easy
installation they’re safer for maintenance staff too.
Safety Safety is paramount in industrial environments. Our lighting solutions can make
yours a safer place for people and production processes.

ComparingtechnologiesMany light sources are suitable for industry from linear and point sources to TL,
HID or LED technologies. Each have their own features and benefits, but your
optimum choice will depend on a number of considerations including building
type, the nature of your industry, energy bills and maintenance costs.
Grolsch BreweryEnschede, the Netherlands
Luminaires and light
Different lighting choices will influence the number of
luminaires you require, the quality and uniformity of the
light and any modelling effects that you may experience. In
general, point sources require fewer luminaires but result
in more shadows, whereas linear installations will give a
more uniform light but require more luminaires. Colour
temperatures and rendering will also vary. Luminaires with
a high colour rendering index will provide a better quality
of light in production environments to improve employee
safety and well-being.
• The number of luminaires for a point source installation
will be significantly lower than for a linear light source
installation.
• Installation costs can be reduced by integrating power and
lighting in trunking systems.
• A wide range of fluo rescent lamps are available with
different colour temperatures, colour rendering and
lifetime. The range of HID lamps is more limited.
Low cost installations
Another trade off will be between the initial investment
and any ongoing costs. The operating hours and
temperatures will also affect the choice of lighting and
how much maintenance it will require. For example,
linear fluorescent lamps will not ignite at temperatures
below -10°C whereas HID and LED luminaires are almost
ambient temperature independent. Philips has a wide
range of sustainable solutions for industry. The following
table will give you an overview of the technologies that are
available.

Audi
Audi refurbished their three-storey office building with a modern
and efficient lighting concept to give staff the very best working
conditions. 1,650 recessed luminaires were replaced with Philips
luminaires, downlights and accent lights. A control system dims the
lights and turns them on and off according to time of day, daylight
conditions and people presence. The solution now provides high-
quality lighting at a lower cost with a better eco-balance.

John Deere
As part of a company-wide refurbishment, the world leader
in agricultural technology installed new lighting in its offices. A
combination of different types of Savio, SmartForm and Celino
TL5 lamps with patented, micro-lens optics were chosen. The
innovative solution provides a pleasant, natural ambience that
complies with all office norms. Stylish Fugato downlights also
provide attractive accents. The new office solution saves up to
50% in energy with additional savings generated by the daylight-
responsive control system.

good visibility and no pockets of shade.
Our solutions are designed to control light
distribution, illuminating large areas and
