Tubeline – A Case Study with a similar the System

Background of the project:

• Temperatures as high as 47°C were recorded during summer;

• Feasibility of blown air systems investigated;• It must not add extra heat into the tunnels;• It must retrofit to existing trains;• Breathable quality of air is essential.

• Students to describe control functions taking into account full consideration of risks, hazards and the efficient use of energy.

Forming the Groups

Groups were formed by the module team during one lecture;

Group size: 7 students (6 students in 2011/2012);

Students typically chose within a range of up to 3~4 students;

Groups were completed by merging small groups together or by allocating students individually.

Forming the Groups

*not quantified

Diversity in groups is not enough to attain the gap between BME and White students – students could work independently, still.

Tutors are responsible to design Assignments that foster TEAMWORK.

Group preparation labsessions

Main objectives of the lab preparation sessions:

• Familiarisation of the overall system and components;

• Understand the mechanism of the drying system;

• For students to produce a lab session plan;

• For students to synchronise tasks so as to meet team goals.

Main learning outcomes of the group labs:

• Familiarisation with a real-world industrial application;• Introduction to a state-of-the-art engineering problem;• The students were enabled to self-plan and operate a lab

session;• Gained confidence and experience to the type of work that

they are expected to do in Industry;• Experienced a real world risk assessment where they

contributed to the health and safety aspects of the task;• TEAMWORK in Diveristy.
