ITU to the Rescue! ITU’s Training Equipment gets a NEW Look! On February 13th a manufac- turing plant safety manager from New York contacted us (ITU) through our websites’ (  Ar cF la sh En gi nee ri ng.com ) instant Live chat service. With a sense of urgency the safety manager began asking very specic questions about  Arc Flash Analysis. ITU’ s sales team and in house electrical engineers were able to answer the gentlemen’s questions in just a few minutes and were able to provide additional information to help shed some light on OSHA’ s electrical safety requirements. Shortly after the conversation we followed up with the safety manager to nd out if there was anything else we could do for him. Come to nd out, OSHA had done a surprise inspection on the safety managers’ facility and found them out of compliance on several workplace electrical safety regulations! The issued citation read as follows: Citation 1 Item 2a Type of Violation: Serious 1910. 132(d)(1): The employer did not assess the workplace to determine if hazards were present, or were likely to be present, which necessitate the use of  personal pro tective equipment (PPE): (a) Throughout the facility, on or prior to 8/26/11: Hazard assessment(s) did not address electrical hazard(s) which may necessitate the use of personal protective equipment to protect employees from arc ash hazards. Arc ash hazard s may be encountered during maintenance or similar operations.  Abatement note: The h azard asses sment and p ersona l pr otect ive equipment selection should be based on the recommendations listed in NFPA 70E “Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace”, Article 130, Table 130.7(C)(9) “ Hazard/Risk Category  Classications and Use of Rubber Insulating Gloves and Insulated  and Insulating Hand Tools” and Table 130.7(C)(10) Protective Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment. This is ideal for the travelling instructor and the class room that is already tight on space. The shorter frame also makes it easier for the students and the instructor to make eye contact during the training presentation. Instead of having to constantly peer over or around the systems students can sit more comfortably Our unique electrical training sys- tems now feature a lower prole frame. The systems still have all the same great features but now are a little shorter and lighter weight. This makes the training systems easier to pack around and store.

ITU to the Rescue!

ITU’s Training Equipmentgets a NEW Look!

On February 13th a manufac-turing plant safety managerfrom New York contacted us(ITU) through our websites’ ( ArcFlashEngineering.com) instant Live chat service.

With a sense of urgency thesafety manager began askingvery specic questions about Arc Flash Analysis. ITU’ssales team and in house electrical engineers were able to answerthe gentlemen’s questions in just a few minutes and were able toprovide additional information to help shed some light on OSHA’s

electrical safety requirements.

Shortly after the conversation we followed up with the safetymanager to nd out if there was anything else we could do forhim. Come to nd out, OSHA had done a surprise inspection onthe safety managers’ facility and found them out of compliance onseveral workplace electrical safety regulations!

The issued citation read as follows:

Citation 1 Item 2a Type of Violation: Serious

1910. 132(d)(1): The employer did not assess the workplace todetermine if hazards were present, or were likely to be present,

which necessitate the use of  personal protective equipment (PPE):

(a) Throughout the facility, on or prior to 8/26/11: Hazard

assessment(s) did not address electrical hazard(s) which may

necessitate the use of personal protective equipment to protect

employees from arc ash hazards. Arc ash hazards may be

encountered during maintenance or similar operations.

Abatement note: The hazard assessment and personal protective

equipment selection should be based on the recommendations

listed in NFPA 70E “Standard for Electrical Safety in the

Workplace”, Article 130, Table 130.7(C)(9) “ Hazard/Risk Category

Classications and Use of Rubber Insulating Gloves and Insulated

and Insulating Hand Tools” and Table 130.7(C)(10) Protective

Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment.

This is ideal for the travellinginstructor and the class room thatis already tight on space.

The shorter frame also makes iteasier for the students and the

instructor to make eye contactduring the training presentation.Instead of having to constantlypeer over or around the systemsstudents can sit more comfortably

Our unique electrical training sys-tems now feature a lower proleframe. The systems still have allthe same great features but noware a little shorter and lighterweight. This makes the trainingsystems easier to pack around

and store.

Pursuant to 29 CFR 1903.19(d), the employer must provide

certication to OSHA that this violation has been abated within 10

calendar days of the “Date by which Violation Must be Abated”.

Date By Which Violation Must be Abated: 02/20/2012

The inspection came as a complete surprise to the company andthey had no idea that they were violating major OSHA safetyregulations.

Due to the urgency of the situation, we (ITU) rushed out to New York to help resolve the problems. In just one week we were able toperform the entire analysis of the facility, get the staff the necessarytraining, and get the company in full compliance. The companyhas since then submitted proof to OSHA that the analysis has beencompleted and all necessary personnel have been trained. They arecurrently waiting on the abatement process to go through. If it doesthen most, if not all, nes associated with the citations should bewaved.

In most cases, if the company seeks and acquires compliance

within 10 days, most if not all, citations can be abated. However, there is no guarantee that an abatement documentation will beapproved, so do not count on this process to bail your companyout of some hefty nes. Also, there is no guarantee that ITU’s eldtechnicians will be available at a moment’s notice. So don’t wait, seek compliance immediately!

OSHA is ramping up its Whistleblowing Program.

President Obama has recently increased funding for OSHA’s “whistleblowing” program by $5 million. This will add 37 more “driven” compliance ofcers to the staff, which will increase thenumber of surprise inspections and citations issued, such as thecase in the New York facility (above). It is more important now thanever that company/business owners and managers become awareof OSHA’s regulations and take the proper safety precautions.

If you’re not sure whether your facility is in compliance then chancesare it is NOT! CLICK HERE to nd out more about OSHA’s electricalsafety requirements and get in compliance before it’s too late.

If your existing Arc Flash Warning Labels do not look like this then yourfacility may not be in compliance. Click Here for more information.

and still be able to see and followalong with the presentation.

ITU’s training systems are themost affordable way to provideSAFE hands-on training. Thesetraining systems utilize a modiedfeed voltage (12.0 to 24.0 VAC)

that allows a student to work withactual powered circuits yet protectsthe student from shock or burn.

Our Electrical training curriculumprovides a fun and exciting wayto teach and learn. Studentswill learn how to trouble shootelectrical systems like a proin just a fraction of the time itwould take in a normal class

room setting.

The training material that comeswith these systems is easy tounderstand and provide a laidback approach learning that issure to stick!

Training systems that are gettingthe new design:

• Electrical Controls

• Programmable Logic Controls• Electrical Wiring• Variable Frequency Drive

Controls
