Welcome to 2010, let us all hope that this year proves to be more rewarding than last! A year ago we highlighted the fact that there was over a million sq ft of empty industrial space in Banbury, which resulted in one local paper carrying a front page headline “Waste of Space” adjacent to my photo! A year on I can report the vacant space is now nearer to 500,000 sq ft brought about not as a result of a massive influx of industry but as a result of the former Alcan building on the Southam Road (450,000 sq ft plus) having been demolished.

Rents in the last year have fallen, some quite substantially, however quality accommodation in good locations is still attracting interest. Our advice to freeholders looking to rent or sell is invest some time and effort in ensuring your building is well presented. Occupiers in most cases are no longer prepared to take on work prior to taking occupation; they are too preoccupied in running their businesses and wish good quality accommodation from day one.
