The Industrial Design Section covers a range of research areas and we have re-search projects within Design Driven Inno-vation, Framing and Meaning Making, Agile Product Development, Form and Aesthet-ics and Service Design. Since the beginning we have been pre-occupied with the trans-parency of design processes and methods, which is also reflected in the student pro-jects you will find in this folder and espe-cially in the process reports for each project.

In 1997 we established a study program in Industrial Design. The outset was to create a hybrid between Industrial Design and Engineering, back then it was very innova-tive in a Nordic context, and we have con-tinuously developed our curriculum and program to maintain a competitive profile. Our graduates have a very broad profile and the hybrid model of Industrial Design Engineers have found work in a very broad range of companies from studios like De-signit and Ideaal, to small and medium companies like Hay, Dolle, Nilfisk and Trip Trap to large companies like Lego, Grund-fos and IKEA. They have job descriptions ranging from Design researcher, Industrial Designer, Product Designer, Mechanical Designer, Design Engineer, Product Man-ager, Project Manager, Innovation consult-ant, Business Development Manager and many others. Regardless of the job title and type of company, our Graduates can bring a strong methodological and holistic focus to the development process.

Graduates from the Industrial Design Engi-neering M.Sc. program can seamlessly and actively engage in technical and scientific product development process, in which analysis and synthesis of social and human science aspects in relation to needs, sales and use of products and solutions are sys-tematically and methodically integrated through externalisation and abductive rea-soning, capable of handling wicked prob-lems and open-ended processes.

It is difficult to imagine the classroom any different than it is today. For some reason, this institution hasn’t changed for the last 100 years. When we think of schools, and our conception of a classroom, it tend to be the same way as we were tought in school. The way we teach and treat children and students in our institutions has changed significantly over the same time span however.

This projects aims to create a vision for a new teaching environment in the Danish public schools, by redesigning the classroom space.

With research and phenomenological analysis, it was shown, that the physical space had a significant impact on what activities took place in the classroom, how the teacher designed the learning environment, and how the the students used their bodies and their language.

The problem in need of solving then, was the outdated furniture befitting another time and another didactological approach to learning. While the Danish school system has developed, and become one of the cornerstones of Danish society, the responsible for good education and creating democratic and socially conscience citizens has become that much bigger. The final product is a manifestation of my vision of a new and different way of conducting the learning environment. The product, can be tilted and raise to and upright position to allow for more working positions. The product architecture allows for several Bebop modules to be combined, for tables and panels to be taken off, and be used in new creative ways. The honest design and material choice reflect transparency and currently pressing global issues, which the future (the children) needs to take responsibility for.

BEBOP

Introducing Bebop, first in line of an imagine product line-up in the jazz-series. This furniture is designed as a part of vision for the Danish public schools. The design is the desitilation of didactic vision, body-learning and experience, and international responsibility. Bebop is a piece of furniture, that can be used as seating surface, table and a standing desk all in one. It allows students to choose their preferred working position, or allow teachers to manage

students energy levels, by designating a working position for them.

The Bebop module is constructed in sustainable materials, of leftover wood and 100% recycled plastics, pressed into colourful patterns. Bebops nature, is meant to spark creativity and create awareness of our global responsibility, as it is my vision, that the public school should reflect society’s current challenges.

The team kick-started the project with a field trip to Greece to meet these women. The outcome of the project is Freelief. A trans-portable relieving device that allows wom-en safe access to attend to their biological needs, while the design supports convenient use even inside a 2-person tent. The entrance hole is 20% smaller than a regular Arabic toilet, however, since it is closer to the body, it ensures that all the output is captured. The colors ease the interaction and the asym-metric shape helps the orientation of Freelief during the night time.A hook-in buckle ensures the entrance hole remains open throughout the whole relieving time. Freelief can accommo-date 3 liters of output, allowing the user to empty the product once a day, only.

A huge problem concerning refugee camps is the lack of latrines. This results in a long walking path to reach the nearest toilets. Freelief is intended to be emptied into these common latrines, therefore Freelief is de-signed to be convenient to be carried for long distances, even for kilometers. Freelief with its hydrophobic properties and angled bottom creates the well-known lotus effect, which is also known as a self-cleaning sur-face. Thereby it is easy to empty and clean. The project is focusing on Greek reception centers, however, the problem exists in near-ly every refugee camp all over the world. Thereby, Freelief could potentially make thousands of women’s life safer every day.

Freelief

Having the possibility to use toilets at any time during the day is a basic need. How-ever, in refugee camps, women are afraid to use the common latrines because it means an increased risk to be sexually abused. Therefore, women tend to drink and eat less to minimize their toilet visits. Besides

having their mental health damaged by the continuous fear they live with, there are harmful consequences in their physical state as well. To change the current situa-tion, Freelief offers an alternative solution for women to attend their biological needs when needed.

The project deals with the development of

a new solution for the commercial fishing

industry using creels. A field in which the

problematic of the lost or entangled gear

it’s an evidence, which with time becomes

marine litter and thereby, generates ghost

fishing by continuously killing marine

species. This problem occurs due to the

entanglement of creels lines into the seabed

or due to propeller cut-off of the buoys which

signalize the creels in the sea surface.

Current solutions make barely impossible to

retrieve this lost gear from the deep seas, so,

Seaus wanted to provide a new solution to

solve this.

The solution is ess1.0, a device which permits

fishermen a second chance for retrieval of

lost or entangled creels. This device would be

placed on the existing creel configurations

and would detach the entangled lines and

deploy to the sea surface to permit the

retrieval for the fishermen. The result of it

would permit to reduce fishermen expenses

in case of lost creels and, furthermore, it

would prevent the risk of marine litter and

ghost fishing at the seas.

SEAUS - ESS1.0

This project provides a marine solution

to minimize the risk of ghost fishing and

to reduce the amount of marine litter,

by developing a product for creel fishing

within the commercial fishing industry.

The goal of this product is to provide

a second chance for the fishermen to

retrieve their lost fishing gear.

The awareness of using locally grown greens is raising, but with the Danish climate, the greens grown locally is very season dependent. Restaurants struggle daily with the delivery of imported leafy greens from southern Europe. When the greens arrive it is tasteless, the nutrients are gone and not visually pleasing, all be-cause of the transportation time. The cost of delivery is high, but it is a necessity for fine dining restaurants to use leafy greens in their courses for visual purposes.

Aceterium is the solution for fine dining restaurants who are done relying on imported leafy greens and wants to add the value of local grown leafy greens to their menu. With this product, the restaurants can take back control and grow a week worth of normally imported leafy greens in just 3 weeks. This is done hydroponically with use of LED light, soilless grow medium and water, with the right nutrients, to ensure quality, taste and visuality which is what the restaurants request.

The leafy green seed, such as spinach or aru-gula, is placed in a coco coir plug, the plug is secured in the tower by using a plughold-er. When the tower is inserted into the grow box, and the light is turned on, water will flow through a grow medium inside the tower. This will water the plug and the seed, where-as the plant will grow. It is ready for harvest and use within three weeks.

ACETARIUM

Acetarium is a closed environment prod-uct to deliver freshly grown leafy greens to fine dining restaurants. The product is placed in the kitchen where it operates automatically.

With Acetarium the restaurant will have control over their salad delivery and there will be a steady delivery every three weeks. With four Acetariums there is enough for every day.

Every year the Joint Arctic Command handle more than 75 ‘Search and Rescue’ operations in Greenland, which is almost one operation every fifth day! Among the distressed are civil sailors, who either collide with drifting ice or in most cases, hits a skerry. Greenland is represented by a vast coastline of 45,000 km used, and with the small population of 56,000 people. This becomes a major prob-lem for organising a ‘Search and Rescue’ op-eration. Often the sailor is all alone, and have limited tools for calling for help - and in con-trary the ‘Search and Rescue’ teams have an impossible task of calling for help.

The Rescue Beacon is developed in col-laboration with several parties; Joint Arctic Command, police of Greenland, the local government, several interest organisations for maritime safety in Greenland, Danish airforce, Polar Seafood, AAU - Defend Arctic and several local sailors in a participatory de-sign development.

The Rescue Beacon can track your approxi-mate location and broadcast it to all nearby vessels in range and via satellites if available. In all, the Rescue Beacon helps a distressed sailor become far more visible and eases the current problem of finding distressed sailors. All of this greatly improves chances of sur-vival even in remote Arctic regions such as Greenland. The concept gains its core values of ‘not being of annoyance’ when not in use. Its installed on the rear side of the boat, to accommodate the sailors’ requirements for safety equipment - since it is a major prob-lem that the large sailing community of Greenland tent not to use safety equipment at all because if “it being in the way”.

Arctic Rescue Crew

The Rescue Beacon is an inflatable beacon which can ‘call for help’ in an emergency. It is built to withstand the harsh weather conditions of the Arctic climate and uses

a series of features to alarm nearby sailors and official ‘search and rescue’ personnel in an automated system when deployed.

Currently, there are no available products that are specifically designed for transport-ing tools and materials on traditional bicy-cles and which provide safe storage when left unattended.

Urban environmentsThe traditional bicycle is a low-cost invest-ment and able to go through the narrow spaces of the city, making it a perfect choice for employers and workers that navigate in cities with traffic and limited parking options. SEKUR is developed to provide a smooth transition from riding the bicycle to rolling the SEKUR toolbox along when the bicycyle is parked. Being specifically target-ed towards working in the urban scene, the obstacle of stairs and elevations has been a key area to develop the SEKUR to pass with ease. With the two large wheels on each side of the toolbox, it is possible to roll along and up stairs to lower physical strain on the user.

Theft-proofLeaving expensive tools and equipment un-attended and unlocked in crowded environ-ments almost calls for theft. A central lock-ing system ensures the SEKUR toolboxes are locked to the rack which is safely attached to the bike. In continuation of the attachment to the rack, the lid is locked by two electric locks, preventing the lid to be opened for access. To unlock and gain access, the user must display a RFID tag on the front of the front toolbox and back of the rear toolbox to unlock the central locks. The RFID tag is small and fits into a keychain. When present-ed, the locks will open for the user to deat-tach the toolbox from the rack and open the lock. When toolbox and lid are left for more than two minutes, they will automatically lock themselves.

SEKUR

SEKUR HIMO 39 is the new toolbox de-veloped to support craftsmen that need to be highly mobile in urban areas. The SEKUR attaches to any standard dimen-

sion bicycle and instantly transforms it to a high capacity utility vehicle that stores most tools and equipment for small and medium-sized tasks.

People will do anything to save a relative, who is seconds away from drowning. Many instinctively engage risky swimming rescues in rough seas, which may be the only timely option. A flotation aid is essential for safety in such situations, but unfortunately, the current public rescue equipment on the beaches are often far away, slow to equip and swim with. The Rescue Board is designed to save lives at the beach, where a regular lifebuoy can-not be thrown far enough. It is designed to be placed near the shoreline during summer to be readily available when most accidents happen. The board enables a faster and safer rescue, even for civilians with a minimum of prior experience. With the board, the rescuer will be positioned on top of the water, caus-ing a better line of sight, higher swim speed, less energy used for propulsion and keeping warm. If you do engage a swimming rescue, then do it as safely as possible.

The final specified product is an emergen-cy station with a flotation device on which the civilian rescuer paddles out to the near-drowning. Tests of the Rescue Board suggest that it can more than halve the time of the current rescue scenario of acquiring and swimming with a lifebuoy ring, while in-creasing safety of the rescuer.

RE:THINK - Water safety

The purpose of the Rescue Board is to aid civilian rescues of near-drowning vic-tims on beaches outside the primary lifeguarding areas. The focus is to excel during swimming rescues. This is done by

increasing rescue speed and safety, while also considering design for prevention, ed-ucation and facilitation of near-drowning incidents.
