NURTURING HOLISTIC ENGINEERS WHO DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS

Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) is about solving problems, making decisions and optimising processes. Our graduates are taught technical skills, like applied mathematics and computer science, as well as the business mind-set, to approach problems in a holistic way.

Industrial and Systems Engineering draws concepts from engineering, mathematics, computer science, economics and business to derive efficiency and productivity improvement that is required in today’s increasingly competitive global market.

The NUS Industrial and Systems Engineering programme equips students with a comprehensive and rigorous set of analytical and management skills required to identify, analyse and design complex systems. Graduates will be able to engineer processes and systems, and develop innovative solutions to improve quality and productivity.

A key feature of our programme is that all our graduates will undertake a nine-month project where they will be attached to a company as consultants to study and analyse an actual industrial problem. The students will work closely with a company representative to understand the problem and develop practical solutions to address it. At the end of the project, students will present their findings and recommendations to the company’s management. Through this project, our students demonstrate the value that they can bring to an organization. It is not uncommon to hear of students receiving job offers at the end of their projects.

WHAT IS ISE?

System Design Project

Due to the versatility in their training, our graduates find employment across different sectors. Below is a breakdown of the various industries our recent graduates find employment in:

• Financial/Business: Management Consultancy, Risk Analysis, Financial Analysis, Operations Analysis

• Manufacturing: Quality and Reliability, Process Engineering, Human Factors, Advanced Production Planning

• Government: Industry Analysis, Productivity Improvement, Research and Development, Service Quality, Defence Operations Analysis

• Logistics: Supply Chain Management, Distributed Network Design, Transport Planning Analysis, Order Fulfilment, Vendor Managed Inventory

• Chemical/Offshore: Reliability Engineering, Process Engineering, Procurement, Oil Trading

• Others: Healthcare Service Management, Project Management, Process Improvement, Systems Integration, Six Sigma Consultancy

ISE IN A DATA DRIVEN ERA In the era of digital economy where large data is available, data analytics and modelling skills will grow increasingly vital. Having a holistic foundation in applied mathematics, computer science and business, our graduates are well equipped with the necessary analytics and modelling skillsets to improve decision making and optimise processes. As companies and organizations seek to harness the rise of new technologies, industrial and systems engineers will play an increasingly important role in Industry 4.0 and the digital economy, especially in big data, analytics, simulation and systems integration.
