For the industrialsubcontracting sector, which generates morethan 50 percent of all industrial innovation, thefuture therefore lies in resource and materialsefficiency. Because in the battle for customerloyalty there is no substitute for technical supe-riority. The kinds of value-creating innovationsthat set the benchmark in this area will be onshow at Industrial Supply. The fair is where sub-contractors and suppliers meet to network withtheir peers at world-class forums and confer-ences and learn about new trends and future-defining solutions (see page 3).

Sector anticipates growth of between five and ten percentGermany’s industrial supply and subcontractingsector has returned to optimism since the darkdays of 2009 and is now predicting economicgrowth of five to ten percent for 2010. A recentsurvey by the German Subcontracting IndustryAssociation shows that 86 percent of Germany’ssubcontracting firms rate their current situation

as either good or satisfactory, while 60 percentexpect business to stabilize at current levels.The automotive industry in particular anticipatesa solid export market fuelled by steadily growingdemand in India, Brazil, China, Japan and theUSA. Similarly, the construction industry is feel-ing the benefit of government stimulus pack-ages, while the mechanical engineering industryanticipates added growth due to increasing energy demand.One of the central cross-industry themes atIndustrial Supply 2011 will be lightweight construction. Another highlight is the highly successful biomaterials theme area, which isbeing expanded in 2011 (see page 2). Renewable raw materials (biomaterials) aresteadily increasing in importance, and not just inenergy production, but in industry as well. They al-ready rank among the fastest-growing groups ofmaterials in the world, thanks to the significantpromise they hold for climate protection and re-source conservation, plus the huge efficienciesthey yield in production. HANNOVER MESSE’s firstventure into this theme area, at Industrial Supply2010, comprised the 3rd International Congress onBio-based Plastics and Composites (staged inpartnership with Germany’s nova-Institut), theBio-based Plastics and Composites Marketplaceand the awards ceremony for the 2010Biomaterials Award – and was a runaway success.The latest trends and developments in the seminalbiomaterials market will therefore be on show

Adding value with adhesive technology

How important is joining and fastening technology to industry?High-performance joining and fastening tech-nologies account for a significant share of the in-dustrial value chain and are therefore veryimportant, especially for high-wage countries.They enable the use of innovative materials andhave a decisive influence on the properties offinished components. Because these technolo-gies are often used towards the end of produc-tion processes, their significance is frequentlyoverlooked, especially in the early product de-velopment stages. Yet, they harbor enormouspotential.

And what is the role of adhesive technology inthis context?Because of its ability to bond diverse materials,adhesive technology is ideally suited to energy-efficient lightweight applications that make fulluse of the strength and stability characteristicsof the input materials. Adhesive films can alsobe modified to perform additional functions,such as sealing or cushioning and damping. Manufacturers commonly lack the process un-derstanding necessary to get the best out of ad-hesive technology, but Germany is a worldleader in this regard. This is clearly evident inthe growing significance of adhesives in thecountry’s key technology sectors, such as the

aerospace and automotive in-dustries, and increasingly alsoin the mechanical engineeringsector.

What will be the key trends in2011?Energy efficiency, innovativematerials and lightweight con-struction will remain keytrends in 2011. Apart from theautomotive sector, adhesivetechnology will play a growingpart in the renewables and the mechanical engi-neering industries.
