Fire Evacuation ProcedureThere are notices in the classrooms and other areas that outline the action to take in the event of a fire and where to obtain First Aid. Please read them carefully and make sure that you understand what to do.

IF YOU DISCOVER A FIREImmediately raise the alarm – either activate the nearest fire alarm button or inform the nearest member of staff.

Only if it is possible and safe to do:

a) Call the Fire Brigade by dialling 999 (in the UK the emergency number is 999)

b) Give the Operator your telephone number and ask for ‘FIRE’

c) When asked to give the address give the name distinctly

‘FIRE AT CLIFTON COLLEGE IN COLLEGE ROAD’

d) Do not replace the receiver until the address has been repeated and confirmed by the Operator

IF YOU HEAR THE FIRE ALARM: You MUST assume that there is a fire and evacuate your classroom immediately and in an orderly fashion.

• Report to the designated assembly point.

• Close the classroom door as you leave. The teacher will remove the coloured peg outside the door (Science School and Coulson Centre only). This confirms that the room has been checked and is empty.

• If you are in a classroom adjacent to a toilet, the teacher will check to see that anyone in the toilet has also evacuated.

• Evacuation should be via the NEAREST AVAILABLE EXIT. This may not be the one most commonly used.

• At the Assembly Point the Teacher should take a roll of all pupils known to be in the classroom when the alarm was sounded.

• Upon completion of the register the Teacher should inform the Person in Charge that all pupils are present and accounted for.

• No one should return to the building until directed to do so by the Fire Brigade and the Person in Charge.

THE DESIGNATED ASSEMBLY POINTS SHALL BE AS FOLLOWS:Evacuated Area Assembly Point

Medical SupportIf any student requires medical attention for any reason you should contact a member of staff in the Summer Language School office in the first instance.

MONDAYS/WEDNESDAYS/FRIDAYS:Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Clifton College Summer Language School will operate a ‘walk-in surgery’ based at the Clifton College Health Centre which is on campus. Trained medical professionals who work for the College during term-time will be on hand between the hours of 0930 – 1230 without an appointment, to see any students (or Group Leaders) who may have any minor illnesses or injuries they need attending to.

The Health Centre will then be able to recommend the best course of action, including any medication which should be administered, and will then direct you as Group Leader to where you can obtain this.

Group Leaders should always accompany students to the Health Centre.

Serious illnesses/injuries should always be referred straight to a hospital, or call 999.

ExcursionsHere at Clifton College we arrange a number of excursions to popular destinations around the country. On excursion days Clifton College can be very busy with lots of coaches going to different places, so it is important that both staff and students get on the right one. Group leaders will display appropriate signage for students. It is important that staff, students and group leaders are on time for all meeting times and points, otherwise other people on your coach will be inconvenienced by your lateness. On excursion days you will be given a packed lunch by the Activity/House Leaders who are with you.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM OUR ACTIVITY/HOUSE LEADERS’?It is the responsibility of the Activity/House Leader:

• To gather the group(s) together in the designated area with clear signage.

• To distribute packed lunches to group(s) before leaving Clifton College, clearly explaining that food is not to be eaten on the coaches, and to distribute special dietary requirement packed lunches as appropriate.

• To guide group(s) on to the coaches on Guthrie Road once all students & Group Leader(s) are present.

• To communicate with the Group Leader(s) once on the coach regarding the Itinerary for the day.

• To communicate to all the students and Group Leader(s) the exact meeting points and times.

• To exchange mobile telephone contact numbers with the Group Leader(s) and coach driver in case of emergencies during the day.

• When destination is reached, to guide the group(s) from the coach drop-off to entrances as required and confirm times.

• Our staff should know where they are going and have a basic knowledge of the area that the group is visiting. We provide them with walking tours, maps and other useful information, but they are NOT TOUR GUIDES, and will not have the answers to all of your questions, but will endeavour to find out as much information as possible!

• To be the point of contact for your coach AT ALL TIMES.

• Our staff with always be friendly and enthusiastic. Students have come to England to learn English, it is important that our Activity / House Leaders talk and interact with them as much as possible.

• To assist the Group Leader(s) in the control of their group(s) as required.

• To liaise with the Group Leader(s) regarding the afternoon free time as required – this must be clearly agreed between both the Activity/House Leader(s) and the Group Leader(s).

• Our staff will always have the Health and Safety of students at heart. On the occasions where there is more than one Activity / House Leader with the group(s), one will be at the front of the group and one will be at the back of the group.

You have chosen a great programme! We have lots of special ideas, methods and materials to help you improve your English and have a good time.

We will help you...

• speak and write more naturally.

• improve your pronunciation.

• develop your vocabulary.

• use grammar better.

• read and listen with more understanding.

• have fun and make friends.

Our qualified teachers will be using fun activities and teaching materials to promote active use of real life English … so you’ll have interesting lessons. And here’s some important information about your classes…

• You will see different teachers in your English classes.

• Please bring pens and paper to class.

• We will give you a small amount of homework each day. Please make sure you do it - your teacher might want to use it with the class in the next lesson.

• There will be different nationalities and different ages in each class, but you will be with other students who have a similar level of English.

• If you have a problem with your classes or other students, tell your class teacher or your group leader. If you have a problem with your teacher, please speak to your group leader. Your group leader can then talk to our Academic Manager.

• If you are ill and can’t come to a class, you must tell your group leader before the class starts. Your group leader then needs to tell the Academic Manager.

English ProgrammeHow to improve your English quicklyHere are some useful ideas about how to improve your English.

TRY THEM – THEY WILL HELP!

If you need help with your speaking:

• Speak as much English as possible and participate fully in class.

• Plan what you want to say, then practise a dialogue in your head.

• Speak to at least five people outside class every day.

• Have a conversation on a different topic every day.

• Use the phrase of the day that we teach the teen classes.

• Try to speak English to your friends, even if they speak your native language.

• Try to use three words or idioms you’ve learnt recently.

• Don’t worry if you make mistakes! It’s natural and we are all here to learn together.

If you need help with your writing:

• Write a diary for every day of the week, describing your feelings, the weather, your activities, etc.

• Make sure you do your homework.

• Check the spelling of ten words in the dictionary every day.

• Copy out your corrected homework so there are no mistakes.

• Use paragraphs!

• Find a pen friend and write regularly.

• Try to find alternatives for simple words like ‘good / bad / nice / get’.

If you need help with your listening:

• Sit near your teacher.

• Listen to your favourite songs in English and read the text at the same time.

• Sing along and practice as you listen to your favourite music.

• Listen to the people talking around you. What are they talking about? How do they feel?

• Listen carefully to the intonation of people talking. Do their voices go up or down, and when?

• Record yourself reading English, then listen to yourself. Is it clear?

• Listen for key words when people are speaking to you.

• Don’t be afraid to ask people to repeat what they are saying.

Page 14: INDIVIDUAL STUDENT INFORMATION - Experio Life...Bristol NHS Walk-in Centre, City Gate, 33 Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EZ. Contact: Tel. 0117 906 9610. Opening times: Monday - Saturday

If you need help with your reading:

• Try to follow the news about your country in our newspapers.

• Make a collection of articles you find interesting.

• Underline the key vocabulary and expressions in the articles.

• Practise using your dictionary.

• Time your reading: can you read ten pages in an hour?

• Ask yourself three general questions about an article or story before reading – then see if you can find the answers.

• Read articles and stories and try to remember ten important facts.

• Read the first lines of every paragraph of an article and guess the general idea.

• Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word.

• Don’t use a dictionary while you are reading – guess the word/phrase and check it afterwards.

The English programme in Clifton College with Bristol Language Centre (BLC)

• The English programme has been designed by a team of experienced international teachers and teacher trainers to ensure students make rapid progress in English in an enjoyable and memorable way.

• To ensure students are actively involved in every class, we have selected modern and stimulating course book materials from Elementary to Advanced levels, which include quizzes, error awareness, gap-fills, class projects, games, discussions, live writing, dictations, role plays, group work and pair work.

• Our course book materials also help students discover many aspects of the life and culture of the UK and the wider English-speaking world.

• The week has been carefully planned to provide a balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing, with appropriate emphasis on grammatical accuracy and lexical development.

• Each class has at least two different teachers, who work closely together as a team to monitor the progress of each student. This helps with classroom management and important decisions about students and also ensures students are exposed to a variety of regional accents.

• Students are tested to find which level is most appropriate on the first morning, and their progress in class is monitored by the team of teachers under supervision of our Academic Manager. On completion of the course, each student receives a leaving certificate.

• Virtually every member of the Royal family past and present have visited the school: King George V and Queen Mary; the Queen; Winston Churchill; the Prince of Wales in 1927 when he opened the Science school also played a game of squash and fives; 70 years later Prince Edward opened the Real Tennis court at BB and played a game! Prince Charles came in 1980s, landing on Clifton’s helipad on New Field, whilst in 1989 John Major hosted a debate in Big School a few weeks before he became Prime Minister.

• The American Army occupied the School during 2nd World War and planned the D-Day landings on the Omaha beaches in the current Library. The plans were kept in a drawer in Poole’s House in the study that currently overlooks the penguin enclosure in the Zoo.

• The Cub Scout movement started in the Preparatory School.

• The NSPCC had its first meeting in Big School.

Fascinating facts about the buildings:

• The school “building plot” was originally going to be a big housing estate but because there was a recession at the time, as well as problems getting water to this part of the rapidly expanding city, a group of businessmen bought the plot and built a school for the children of Bristol’s businessmen.

• The Father Willis organ in the chapel has 4000 pipes.

• The tomb in the crypt contains the only Bishop not to be buried in his own cathedral. Bishop Percival was the first Clifton Head Master.

• School House used to be a pub called The Gardiner’s Arms right on the edge of the city.

• Charles Hansom designed the buildings. He was the brother of the man who designed the Hansom cab – a revolution in transport.

• Big School, now used for eating, is where all lessons were held and each “form“ (a grouping of students) sat on a bench and worked hard all year and if they passed their examinations each year moved up a bench up the Hall until they reached the “Upper Bench“. It is believed that Bentley (designer of the cars) sat on the third form bench for five years (too busy designing cars). His portrait is in the library of Oakeley’s House.

• Each of the Houses (School House, Oakeley’s, Moberly’s, Hallward’s, Poole’s) were designed and built by a teacher to provide them and their family a home, quarters for servants, kitchens for providing meals and rooms and dormitories for the boys. You can find evidence of this in every House.

• Oakeley’s has a weird small tower on top – this was the outlet for the Victorian air conditioning. The houses were also built with ingenious methods for saving rainfall from the roof to be used for flushing the lavatories and urinals.

• Worcester House used to be a “sanatorium” (hospital) for ill pupils and was even used for taking out appendixes!

• The tiles on the chapel floor are a replica of an ancient pattern and if you look carefully there are many intricate patterns.

• Haig’s statue – join the big debate about his role in the deaths in the First World War.

• St George.

• The ”bust” (statue) of Percival in East Cloister made by the leading sculptor of the day.

• The Wishing Well in the corner of the Close near the Cricket Pavilion is used to celebrate the famous first world war poet Newbolt famous for the line “there is a breathless hush on the Close”.

• Memorial arch depicts the names of all the young men killed in 1st and 2nd World Wars as well as the Korean War.

Additional Facts:• Despite the look of the buildings they are only just 155 years old in 2017.

• Agatha Christie stayed here with her uncle – probably in Poole’s!
