Individual Differences
Supporting Individual Differences Through Play
Cultural Diversity
Visible minorities Non – visible minorities Cultural diversity is often not observable We may miss differences of religion,
language, and customs
Cultural Diversity
We need to represent cultural diversity in our centre.
We need to be aware of stereotyping or bias within our classroom.
Family Values
We need to be aware that the values at home will be apparent in play.
Some home values may conflict with centre values.
Close relationships with families can help to blend the two settings
Gender Differences
Girls tend to be more interested in playing with dolls, engaging in art and music.
Boys tend to be more interested in playing with blocks, cars and trucks.
Many families clearly assign gender by the way they dress, by their hairstyle, by body decorations and by the status assigned to the work they do.
Gender Equity
Assign helping tasks equally to boys and girls.
Represent dress up clothes for both genders. Provide books and pictures of diversity in
gender roles Invite guests from diverse roles Encourage play in all areas.
Respect Individual Differences
As educator’s of young children we need to be aware of individual differences and plan our play experiences with respect and sensitivity.
