Message from the President
Unavoidable ChangeWhen people meet Jesus, they always change. Whether they accept Him or reject Him, there will always be change.
Pilate’s haunting question, “What shall I do then with Jesus?” is the reality of what happens when we meet Jesus. Pilate had Jesus scourged and offered the people the option of freeing Barabbas or Jesus. The demon-inspired crowd responded, “Barabbas!” Then Pilate asked, “What should I do then with Jesus?” And the crowd answered, “Crucify him!” (Matthew 27: 21-23).
Not all encounters with Jesus are as vivid, confrontational, or decisive as on that weekend of His death and resurrection 2000 years ago.
Most times, it is a gentle request from Jesus. “Would you please give me a drink of water?” is how He approached the Samaritan woman. A few minutes later, she was running back to the village telling everyone, “Let me show you a man who knows everything about me. He’s the Messiah.” She was changed!
Nicodemus, the wealthy, sophisticated theologian, heard Jesus say, “You must be born again.” It took time, but his life was changed. He became a stalwart leader of the early Christian church.
The disciples heard Jesus say, “Come, I will make you fishers of men.” And they got up, left their boats and nets, and followed Jesus. Talk about change!
I am constantly amazed at how the message of Jesus through Hope Channel changes people’s lives. Our best production can’t match the productions of Hollywood. Yet the letters and reports come pouring in:
“Hope Sabbath School changed my life.”
“Cross Connections showed me Jesus and now I am attending Church and will be baptized soon.”
“Go Healthy For Good has transformed my lifestyle.”
“Where can I find a church like Hope Channel?”
Through our programs, people are meeting Jesus. In different ways, according to their different needs,
people are encountering Jesus and their lives are being changed.
That’s why I believe Hope Channel is so important. Unobtrusive, in homes and institutions, through steel gates and high concrete
walls, it brings people in contact with Jesus. The more who hear, the more are changed. The
secret of Hope Channel is not technology; it is Jesus. He is the life changer!
How about you? Have you encountered Jesus? Has your life been changed? One thing for sure, if you open your heart and let Him in, He will change you for the good, for eternity!
Your friend,
Brad Thorp

I am the 73-year-old who just learned to text. I love texting with the Cross Connection team. A widow for 10 years, I recently lost my little house. But I will still support Hope channel any way I can. I was introduced to your channel about three months ago and have been blessed.
—Gloria
I don’t get to church. So Hope channel means the world to me. I just got a 1.5% raise at work and would like to pass that increase on to Hope channel.
—Betty
The program GOD? is awesome! I’ve never heard anything like it before.

I crushed the envelope you sent me, saying to myself that I have other charities to help. However, when I read your letter and saw the need, I decided to sacrifice this widow’s mite and pray others will contribute likewise. I know Hope channel is God’s channel and He will make it happen.
—Barbara
Hope channel means so much to me! My husband passed away not long ago and now I am alone. So, in the evenings I sit in front of the computer and Hope channel takes away every loneliness. Hope Sabbath School, Mark Finley, Dwight Nelson, Shawn Boonstra, and many others help me get nearer to God and prepare for the coming of Christ. To grow deeper and deeper into the Word of God is a real longing for me.

In an old neighborhood drenched in history and steeped in mythical tales is a row of quaint stucco bungalows. Ibrahim*
lives in one of these homes.
In this neighborhood he was born. It’s where he went to school, where his family worships in the mosque about a mile away, where he met his wife. This neighborhood, this city, this coun-try—Egypt—is all Ibrahim has ever known. The rest of the world is but a dusty collection of facts in textbooks.
Christianity was something he studied in school; nothing more. Curiosity about other people and cultures often had Ibrahim wondering if he’d one day experience the big world that seemed to be forever beyond his reach. He devoured every book, every television show with even a hint of anything outside of Egypt.
But television programming is limited in Egypt. What Ibrahim watched depended on the signals he could pick up with the satellite dish installed on his flat terraced roof. Sometimes he got random Euro-pean programs, but never did he come across anything Christian.
Meanwhile, eastwards across the Mediterranean Sea, in Lebanon, Al Waad (Hope Channel Middle East North Africa) was trying to find a way to consoli-date their broadcasts and better serve their viewers. They were using one satellite to broadcast English programs and another for Arabic, Turk-ish, and Farsi. Their broadcast reach was also limited.
The solution God provided was for Al Waad to be broadcast on Eutelsat 7 West, which is co-located with one of the most popular satellites for TV view-ing in the Middle East. How far it would reach and how
many people would stumble upon it, was difficult to predict. But Amir Ghali, Al Waad Director, did not doubt the power of the Holy Spirit. “We have been praying for this development for many years,” he said. “Our peaceful, non-partisan programs receive many wonderful responses from viewers who watch Al Waad. This development creates a huge expansion for an even larger audience.” What Amir did not expect was for Ibrahim’s satellite dish across the sea, in the Muslim country of Egypt, to pick up the new signal.
From the very first time that Ibrahim caught Al Waad on his television set, his mind was opened, his heart was on fire. Every day, every free moment, he watched more and wanted even more. Somehow, the messages from the television were not enough. He wanted to connect with people, he wanted someone to answer his questions. So he called the Al Waad office.
Thrilled to get a call from a viewer in Egypt, Amir and his team set up a Skype date with Ibrahim for
his first Bible study. A very excited Ibra-him met with the Al Waad team and
scheduled several more Bible studies over Skype. But Ibrahim has been so excited about learning more about Jesus that he can’t wait for the next lesson. Every day, the Al Waad of-fice receives calls from Ibrahim.
Just imagine Ibrahim’s life had he never caught Hope Channel’s new, stronger signal!

It all began when she was 20 years old and her parents arranged for her to be married to a much older man
who lived in the city of Jakarta, a whole day’s journey from her home.
Afraid and nervous, she left her family the morning after her wedding and travelled with her husband to live with his parents. The silent journey to her new home was a preview of her future.
Except to give her brief, curt orders, Batari’s husband said very little. There was no show of kindness, respect, or af-fection. Nothing changed the next day, the next year, or the next decade.
She hoped that at least the children they had would bring them together. But she was wrong. She hoped that help-ing her mother-in-law around the house would pave the way for a better life. But it didn’t.
Going back to her family was out of the question. Joining a social group to get some respite was
not acceptable. The only free-dom she had was to do
as she pleased in her little
courtyard. H e r e

occasionally entertained the neighborhood women, but found it very difficult to keep up appearances of being a happy wife.
After about 15 years of a loveless, miserable life, Batari was done. She had nothing to live for—not even her children. She felt that her sadness only had a negative effect on them and they were better off without her de-pressed influence.
Ending her life seemed like the best solution. Deliberate-ly and dispassionately, Batari began planning her suicide. She picked a time when the children were to visit her parents and her husband would be away on a business trip. She’d combine poison and sleeping pills to make it quick and simple.
It took her months to find the courage to execute her plan. And then the day was finally there. Poison and pills in hand, she stood in her living room. Sobs began rush-ing out of her in wretched wails—thinking about her children. In an effort to muffle her cries, she turned on the television and turned up the volume.
Crushed by the weight of her decision to take her life, she fell to the floor, clutching the poison and pills in one hand and the remote in the other. Inadvertently, the tight hold on the remote caused the channels to change—and suddenly she heard a voice talking about finding pur-pose and hope in Jesus. Startled by this ominous message coming from the television, Batari looked up and saw Hope Channel Indonesia! The message was for her! She was too stunned to do anything else but listen to the rest
of the program. By the end of that hour, the poison and pills found their way to the trash and Batari
found herself a new life to explore.
Her husband didn’t change; neither did her in-laws. But they don’t have the same effect on her as they once did. Her new life is filled with a desire to live for her children and for Jesus.
Every week, Batari now has church in her courtyard with the neighborhood women. In sharing God’s Word with them, she is content and sees her future as an amaz-ing journey in partnership with God.

Linda had a good life—a job, friends and lots of sup-portive family members who lived very close to her.
Yet, she was full of despair.
“I could not fill this void and sadness inside me,” she says, remembering those dark days when she wanted to end her life. Having run out of options to handle her deep depres-sion, she turned to prayer and the Bible. In her search for spiritual encouragement, she found Hope Channel on her television one day.
“The first truth Jesus brought to me through Hope Chan-nel was His seventh-day Sabbath. I was amazed because I did not know about it at all. I checked the Scriptures to find out more and then I knew it was true! I was so happy for this revelation,” she says, describing the first moment of joy she felt in years.
For weeks, every Sabbath, Linda had church in her living room with Hope Channel. And every week, she wondered if there were people in her town who also worshipped on Sabbath. New in town and homebound by illness, she didn’t know how to go about finding a church that had services on Saturdays. Then one Sabbath she noticed her neighbors pulling into their driveway. “I wonder if they are returning from Sabbath church,” she asked herself, and then quickly dismissed the thought. That would be too much of a coincidence.
The happier she felt in her new experience with Jesus, the more determined Linda was to find a Sabbath-keeping community. It had been 40 years since she stepped into a church, but that didn’t stop her. Opening her phone book, she looked for churches that perhaps included their hours of worship. And that’s how she found an Adventist church. The following Sabbath, she convinced her sister to join her and the two of them
stepped into a Seventh-day Adventist church for the very first time.
The people were friendly and the service was so similar to what was on Hope Channel, yet it had the added warmth and connection of other worshippers. After church, they were invited for lunch. As they walked down the hallway, Linda noticed a photograph of familiar people on the bul-letin board. She looked closer; it was her neighbors! God had nudged her to ask her neighbors about church several weeks earlier; but when Linda hesitated, God simply found another way!
Staring at the photograph, Linda broke down in tears, overcome by how God had been watching over her from that very first moment she turned to Him in desperate prayer.
December 2013, both Linda and her sister were baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist church. “I didn’t know
how real God was before,” is how Linda sum-marizes the wonderful way in which her life turned around in less than a year. “The Lord is so good and I never want to be without
Him in my life. There’s nothing to go back to once you know the Truth.”

New Life in OngoleAs I boarded the plane for India, my mind went back to 2010 when Hope Channel
India began with a team that was inexperienced but had tremendous faith and an eagerness to learn. This time I was returning to help the same team with New Life, a series of evangelistic meetings over nine nights in Ongole.
Preparations for these meetings began three months earlier when 75 pastors began making contact with the families of 25 nearby villages. Visiting and studying the Bible with the pastors, these families were ready to come listen to the Word of God.
As I do on all my trips to India, I wore a sari my first morning and headed out to the field that was to our auditorium. It was a huge field—with nothing but bare ground at the intersection of two paved roads. Plopping down on the orangey dirt that covers the area to produce the best variety of rice, I prayerfully reviewed the lists of tasks to be done.
By the second day, the trusses for the stage were up; sand was brought in by the truckload to anchor the columns; trenches were dug for electrical conduits. Watching everything happen so quickly and efficiently was very encouraging. We even set up a small tent with a striped canopy to function as the make-up and control room!
The backdrop was beautiful! Jesus holding the earth in His palm told the wondrous story of salvation without any words!
We needed large screens to project the happenings on the stage. By my estimation, the screens had to be at least 24 feet x 16 feet. Not wanting to spend the money on professional screens, we purchased 100 yards of white cotton fabric and sewed our own screens that were held by poles, anchored in barrels of concrete. In the process I learned the art of bargaining!
At about 8:30 every night, the people began to arrive in flat-bed trucks and trailers pulled by tractors. We hired these to function as free transportation. It was so moving to see the vehicles pull in and people scramble off and hurry into the open field.

These were people who had worked a long hard day in the fields and then returned home
to cook their dinner over an open fire. Tired and probably needing sleep more than a sermon, they still came night after night. It was often past 10:30 p.m. when they got back onto the trailer to head back home.
On opening night, children in costume performed musical numbers to welcome the guests. And every meeting began with lively--and very loud--songs that went on for about an hour.
The main preacher was Dr. Frank Adiele whose English sermons were translated into Telugu by the local leader of the Church, Wilson Measapogu.
The response to the messages was amazing. We had an average of 4000 people attending every night. The night that Dr Adiele made a passionate appeal for people to accept Jesus as their savior, about one-third of the audience came rushing to the front. Pastors and Bible workers were waiting by the stage to pray with those committing their hearts and lives to Jesus.
What was even more wonderful than the experience of worshipping with 4000 people every night is knowing that the messages were being recorded to be translated and rebroadcast on Hope Channel India in five other Indian languages. Imagine people in other parts of India
hearing Dr. Adiele’s message in their own language! This will be happening in 12 major cities in India, beginning May 2014.
Every night when I returned to my hotel after the meetings and walked past the altars of Hindu gods in the lobby, strewn with offerings and flowers, I was acutely reminded of the Gospel Commission to tell everyone about Jesus’ love.

Morning worship on the beach
Even though she hadn’t yet found a home church, Susan was spiritually strong. She
studied her Bible and strived to reflect Jesus in her interactions with others.
Channel surfing one day for new Christian programming, she came across Hope Channel. Mark Finley was on, talking about foods that are good versus ones that aren’t.* She was fascinated by the biblical references he shared and made a mental note of watching him again.
The next time she watched Mark, he talked about what happens when people die.* The perspective he presented was so different from what she heard in most churches. Also, the Bible passages she had read on her own earlier that had made her wonder about death were becoming clear!
Intrigued by all the new things she was learning, Susan began recording all of Mark Finley’s presentations. She also began exploring other programs on Hope Channel.
Susan had many health challenges with weight, pre-diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and gastric issues. And Go Healthy for Good looked like a program she could use. She began watching it regularly and learned of ways to take control of her health.
Putting into practice all that she learned, Susan lost 36 pounds, her pre-diabetes was reversed,
& AFTER HOPE CHANNEL
BEFOREand her blood pressure was normal without medication. Even the gastric problems were gone! Her heartbeat was strong and her joints were pain free, Susan was now living a more productive life!
Eager to share all the positive changes in her life, she posted her story on the Go Healthy for Good Facebook page.
Go Healthy for Good host Dr. Nerida was so pleased to hear about Susan’s change in lifestyle that she phoned her to see if there was anything else Hope Channel could do for her. “I have more questions about things in the Bible,” Susan responded. “I’d love to study the Bible regularly with someone.” Dr. Nerida immediately agreed to study with Susan. And since November 2013, they both have had phone appointments every weekend to study God’s Word.
During the week, Susan continues to watch Hope Channel. On a recent Mark Finley presentation, she learned about the Sabbath* and has, since then, been observing the Sabbath and attending a local Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Susan looks forward to a new life with a healthy lifestyle, with Jesus in control, and with a supportive, encouraging church community.

Several months ago, we received an interesting query from Muriel, an avid Hope Channel viewer. Muriel
wanted to help Hope Channel with its ministry, but felt she didn’t have the financial resources to make a donation. But her mother had just passed away, leaving behind an extensive coin collection.
“Will you accept coins as a donation to show my support for Hope Channel?” she asked.
Touched by her willingness to give away her inheritance to Hope Channel, we asked her what she liked the most about Hope Channel.
She responded, “I love how Hope Channel provides resources for new Christians as well as those who have already been in the faith for a long time.” We thanked her for her generous gift and asked her what she’d like to say to others who might be hesitant to support Hope Channel in ways other than money.
Muriel replied:
Hope Channel praises God for Muriel and others like her who are dedicated to changing lives. We invite your support as we prepare millions of hearts for Jesus’ soon coming.
Creative Ways to Support Hope Channel“Jesus is coming again and the things of this world aren’t going to mean anything to us in a little while. I encourage others to support Hope Channel with their financial resources. Do something positive that will impact lives in a meaningful way while we still can!”
Call Hope Channel Today at 888-4HOPE-TV (888-446-7388) to see if your gift of art, antiques, jewelry, or other tangible personal property can be used to support our ministry.
Additionally, gifts of stock and real estate such as houses, farms, land, and commer-cial property could not only provide you with considerable savings in capital gain and personal income taxes but also be used in advancing the gospel.

Every five years, children ages 10–15 belonging to Pathfinder Clubs* around the world gather in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for an international week of worship, activities, and lots of fun. The theme for the 2014 camporee is Forever Faithful, based on the Old Testament character Daniel. A prophet and leader, he lived right in the epicenter of civilization at that time and yet was not conformed by it.
As of March 2014, over 38,000 tickets to this event have been sold. And Hope Channel is excited to be broadcasting portions of this event that celebrates young people’s desire to follow Jesus.
*Pathfinder Clubs are similar to the Boy and Girl Scouts. They are developed and run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in partnerships with churches and schools.
If you’ve been enjoying David Asscherick’s sermon series, GOD? on Hope Channel, you can now purchase the entire set of 12 presentations for just $49.95.
