What is indigenous?

• From what I know indigenous means someone originating or occurring naturally from one place or native. Aboriginal Australian’s or Torrse Straite Islanders are what we know the indigenous in Australia as.

• Indigenous Australians were the first to settle on this land. They became the first occupants of the land.

• Aboriginals and Torres Straite Islanders have their own individual flag which was designed to represent the Indigenous Australians from the 1970s to 1990s.

What are the aboriginals?

• Aboriginals are those people who found the land in Australia. They where known as ‘the first and earliest to live on the land’.

• They lived on the land for several thousands of years before the white man came along and evolved the way of living.

• They believed in the ‘Dreamtime’ which is the center piece of their culture.

• Captain James Cook was the first to land in botany bay in 1770. Aboriginals were shocked to see white people in strage clothes.

• A lot of aboriginals live in the Northern Territory.• About 20,000 years ago aboriginals moved to

Uluru also known as ‘airs rock’. It was believed that in the beginning the rock was unformed and featureless.

• I have not been to Uluru but I have heard that there are several images painted on the rock around it and inside little caves which is said to have been done by the aboriginals.

What I know about this?

• I don’t know a lot about indigenous education as this was not covered a lot throughout my schooling. I remember being told a little bit about the stolen generation. Which I believe is where the government took young children from their families. For which reason I am not sure why?

The Sapphires

• The Sapphires is a movie which has been created based on the aboriginals way of life throughout the war. It is based on a true story of four woman who sang to the Vietnam troops in 1968. This movie gave me a lot of insight into how it was in the 60s for them. How they lived and how one of the girls was taken in the stolen generation.
