Literacy Rate

01. The number of people that can read and write over the age of 15.

0The literacy rate in the United States is 98.7%

0 Literacy rate can tell us :0 If a nation is developed-the

literacy rate will be high-over 65%

0 If a nation supports education, invests in human capital.

0 What the GDP might be like.

0 What type of leader a county has.

Infant Mortality Rate

0 The number of infants out of 1000 that die before age 1-2.

0 In the United States, the infant mortality rate is 5.99-meaning almost 6 out of every 1,000 infants die before age 1

0 The nation of Monaco has the lowest at 1.8, and Afghanistan has the highest with a rate of 121.6.

0 Infant Mortality Rate can tell us:

0 Whether a nation has good health care.

0 If a nation has advanced technology.

0 If the nation is developed or developing

0 If the people of a nation have access to medical care and medicines.

Gross Domestic Product0 It represents the total

dollar value of all goods and services produced in a year

0Per capita –the total amount of money a person makes in a year.

0Gross Domestic Product can indicate:

0The size or health of a nations economy.

0How the people live in a nation-their standard of living.

0Whether a nation is developed or developing.

Economic Freedom Index

0On a scale of 0 to 100, this number indicates how free a nation is to trade with others.

0This indicator can be used to determine what type of government and economic system the nation has.

Infrastructure

0 -The system of services and programs in a nation.

0Examples are government, buildings, roads, security such as military or police, health care, education, transportation.

0The United States has a highly developed infrastructure with highways, buildings and many services for the population.

Developing Nation

0A nation with little infrastructure, low standard of living, poor to no health care, low literacy rate and higher infant mortality.

0Frequently have poor or corrupt governments, civil wars and underprivileged economies.

Developed Nation0 - A nation with a well-

organized government that is able to provide many services for their population, good infrastructure, higher standard of living, advanced technology, healthcare and education.

0Developed nations usually have democratic governments, offer the citizens full participation, health care, education and more.

0Nations are listed high on the Human Development Index.

Religion

0 -A belief system, personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices.

0Religion often indicates:0Culture of a region or

nation.0Traditions and holidays0Can reflect the legal

system such as Sharia (Muslim Law)

Standard of Living0The necessities, comforts,

and luxuries enjoyed by an individual or group-how well people live.

0Many people in the Afghanistan have a lower standard of living than those in Egypt

0Standard of Living can tell us:0How people live0Whether they have education

Life Expectancy

0 -The average life span of an individual.

0Life Expectancy can reflect:

0The process of becoming desert (as from land mismanagement or climate change)

0Many regions experience desertification due to:

Deforestation

0 -The action or process of clearing of forests; also : the state of having been cleared of forests

0Deforestation occurs in nations that have poor laws or rules about abuse of the land.

0This can occur due to slash and burn techniques to create more farming land or need of the wood for firewood or for sale.

Pollution

0The action of polluting especially by environmental contamination with man-made waste.

0The amount of pollution found in a nation is usually related to how developed a nation is.

0Pollution is frequently found in developing nations that do not have laws or enforce environmental protection.

Types of Jobs0 -Jobs or employment are

divided into three different categories-agriculture, services and industry. How people in a nation earn a living can be an indicator as to whether the nation is developed or developing

0Nations where most people make their living through agriculture 60% or more are developing nations.

0Developed nations have a balance of agriculture, service and manufacturing.

Ethnic Group –Versus Religious Group

0An ethnic group is the ethnicity to which you are born-it cannot change, however religion is a belief system that can change.

0People who practice the Christian faith are ethnically diverse (do you know this word???)

0Certain religions and ethnic groups are common to specific regions of the world and be indicators about the population, culture.

0Ethnic groups are sometimes located in certain regions, but not always.

Interdependence

0People and nations relying on each other in different places or in the same place for ideas, goods, and services.

0What happens in one nation can affect many others.

0Todays economy is significantly different than 30 years ago.

0We purchase many more goods made outside the United States than ever before.

Nationalism

0Desire for ones own nation-to rule your country. A love of your nation

0Nationalism in the United States encouraged the young colonists of the Americas to fight for their own nation.
