INTRODUCTION

Shodhana therapy is intended for purification of the body, by which the accumulated morbid humours responsible for diseases are expelled out to produce an ideal environment for proper functioning of body.

Shodhana Is indicated in Bahudosha. Charaka told that, without breaking the boundary , its not possible to dry up a pond. Similarly , when the Dosha are exceedingly vitiated, then expelling by Shodhana is only way , because Shamana , Langhana, Pachana etc do not have the capacity to subside the dosha. Ca. Vi. 3/446

VAMANA KARMA ../

is a process in which vitiated doshas are expelled through the upper route i.e. Mouth.

Vamana karma is the principal treatment told for kaphaj diseases. Vaman elimintes the aggravated kapha collected in the region of amashya through the oral route. (Ca. Su. 20/19)

VIRECHANA KARMAVirechana therapy is second in the sequence of panchakarma, most widely used purifactory procedure especially for paittika disease because of simplicity, eliminating the dosha in more quantity with less stress and having lesser complications compared to vamana. It is also useful in disorders in which pitta is associated with vata or kapha. 20

BASTI (.../) Niruha basti- the basti which gives strength to the body, eliminates doshas from the body with its PRABHAVA, is called niruha basti.23

SHODHANA IN DIFFERENT DISEASES

Indication of shodhana According to dincharya- acharya charaka under the heading of swasthavritta mentioned daily use of pratimarsha nasya, abhyanga, udhwartana, murdhtaila etc in maintainance of healthy state.

Indication of shodhana according to ritucharya- the regimen should be followed in a particular season to maintain healthy state is known as ritucharya. 1. Hemant ritu:- Abhayanga , Utsadana , Murdha taila , Jentaka sweda , Atapa sweda , Ushma swedana.2. Vasant ritu:- Vamana , Tikshna virechana , Asthapana basti, Anuvasana basti , Nasya.3. Sharad ritu:- Snehapana , Virechana, Raktamokshana.

4. Varsha ritu :- this is the season of vata vitiation therefore vasti is the best panchakarma procedure.34

DISCUSSION If the doshas are vitiated beyond a particular level, they give rise to various endo-toxins (Ama), which have a tendency to be accumulated in the minute channels (Srotas). These endo-toxins (Ama) are beyond the level of pacification and hence they need to be eliminated from the body through Sodhana therapy .35
