ABOUT “IAF”

• Established on 8th October1932 as auxiliary force underBritish empire

• first operation was in WapitiPlanes with one squadron

• Earlier known as the RoyalIndian Air Force

• Prefix Royal added in 1945 forrecognition in 2nd world war

• prefix Royal it was droppedwhen India became republic in1950

• part of Indian armed forces

• under ministry of defense

• Airforce day is celebrated

on 8th October

2. Sino indian 1962

In 1962 , Border disagreement between India and China escalated into war when

Chinese mobilized it’s troops on borders. Due to failure of military plannersto effectively use IAF, India lost the war.

3. Second kashmir war 1965

It was the first time IAF was engaged against enemy air force. PAF enjoyedbeing technologically superior and with full hearted support from USA andBritain. However IAF Gnat proved effectiveness against enemy F – 86Sabres. IAF lost 73 aircraft and PAF lost 43 aircraft.

4. Bangladesh liberation war 1971The intensification of independence movement lead to Bangladeshlibration war. 22 nov PAF attacked indian position which leaded tofull fledged war on 3 Dec. PAF followed preemptive strikes on IAFinstallations in Srinagar, Halwara, Ambala, Jodhpur. However IAFdidn’t suffer any significant damage. IAF achieved complete airsuperiority over eastern front. IAF destroyed 94 PAF Aircrafts.
