Agenda Event Speakers
Peter and his wife
Maureen started their
farm in order to put
principles of ecological
restoration into practice,
to provide nourishing food for their family and
community, and build a healthy home for their family.
They farm on 220 acres in the Driftless area of Southwest
Wisconsin. Peter brings his ecological background to his farming practice. He spent a decade at UW-Madison, teaching courses in ecology and complex systems theory,
and researching the history and functioning of Midwestern ecosystems. He realized the critical role that animals play in the creation and maintenance of functional eco-
systems. He also realized that in order to achieve broad scale ecological restoration, it must be an economically viable pursuit.
Therefore he became determined to work with livestock toward ecological regeneration, and Mastodon Valley Farm was born. Now he spends his days observing and
interacting with an increasing diversity of plants and animals working in concert towards the abundant production of food, medicine, fiber, lumber, and energy. Peter con-
tinues to teach through his on-farm courses and consults with other landowners interested in implementing regenerative techniques on their own sites. He has three dogs
that are vital to their farm and family, protecting livestock from predators, helping return the goats when they escape, and are always ready to run and play.

Darby
Simpson
Livestock Farmer,
Dad, Husband,
Ford Truck Driver
Living on his family’s seventh generation farm in
Morgan County, Indiana, Darby began his own
farming enterprise in 2007 after reading “Pastured
Poultry Profits” by Joel Salatin. Over the past 10
years he’s grown the operation that he started with
less than $1,000 to one that produces 3,000 broilers,
125 turkeys, 60 hogs, and 12 beef per year.
The farm now financially supports Darby and his
wife Brandy, along with their two young boys, Ethan
and Zach.
Darby has transitioned himself from a successful
mechanical engineer into a full time farmer and en-
joys the many benefits that come with being self
sufficient in one’s livelihood. His success shows it
is possible to build a business from scratch with little or no knowledge of what Joel Salatin affectionately
calls “lunatic farming”.
Peter Allen
Greg and Jan Judy of Clark,
Missouri run a grazing oper-
ation on 1620 acres of leased and owned land.
Greg and Jan went from near bankruptcy in 1999
to paying off a 200 acre farm and house in 3 years
with custom grazing on leased land and are com-
pletely debt free. They own 4 farms and lease 12
farms. They graze cattle, hair sheep, pastured pigs
and pastured laying hens.
Greg wrote a book in 2001, entitled “NO RISK
RANCHING, Custom Grazing On Leased
Land”, which details the methods they used to
build their operation from scratch. In 2008 Greg
wrote a second book “COMEBACK FARMS, Re-
juvenating Soils, Pastures and Profits with Live-
stock Grazing Management”. Greg’s second
book covers all the methods they use with Holistic
High Density Grazing, multi-species grazing, grass
finishing animals, eliminating costly inputs.
Greg gives talks and teaches all over the US, New
Zealand, Germany, England & Canada teaching
the benefits of Holistic High Density Planned
Grazing, leasing land, multi-species grazing, cus-
tom grazing, agroforestry and wildlife manage-
ment. The Judy’s hold an annual grazing school at
their farm teaching the principles of HHDG. Greg
quit his off farm job in 2009 and is now a full time
rancher.
The Judy’s website is: greenpasturesfarm.net.
