Your steps to success

1 Understand the cost of attendance. Keep in mind that your cost will vary based on choices you make and the aid you receive.

2 Understand how you’ll pay for college. An IU degree may be more attainable than you realize. Student Central is here to make sure you have the answers you need to questions such as:

• How can I make good choices that help me save money?

• How do I apply for financial aid?• What should I know about

student loans?• How can I borrow less?• How do I pay my bill?

You can make college more affordable while staying on track to graduate in four years or less. For example, make sure you’re taking the right classes, find a part-time job, buy used books (or try e-books), select a lower-cost residence hall option, stick with a prepaid meal plan, and take advantage of free entertainment and other activities on campus.

3 Submit a complete application for admission (including official transcript, test scores, and IU-specific essay) by November 1 to receive maximum scholarship consideration. Learn more at admissions.indiana.edu.

4 You can submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov starting October 1. The priority date for completing the FAFSA is April 15.

5 Read and respond to notifications we send you. You’ll get a financial aid letter by mid-March, which will explain what money is available to you and how to get it. And watch your IU email account—if we need information from you, this is how we’ll let you know. Reply quickly to avoid delays with your financial aid.

6 Apply for housing. Housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The choices you make can significantly affect your cost of attendance and applying early for housing can help you get a lower-cost option.

7 Reserve your seat in the class to officially become a Hoosier: go.iu.edu/reserve.

This estimate is for a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in 12–18 credit hours per semester during the 2017–18 academic year (fall and spring semesters). Most courses are 3 credit hours.

Learn all you can about scholarshipsEvery year, IU awards millions of dollars to hardworking and talented students. Submit a complete application to IU by November 1 to be considered for IU Academic Scholarships and Selective Scholarships.

IU Academic Scholarships

Are you a first-time incoming freshman student with excellent academic performance? You may be eligible for the Provost’s Scholarship or the Dean’s Scholarship. If you’re awarded one of these scholarships, you’ll be notified within four weeks of receiving your admission letter. (There’s no additional application required.)

Provost’s Scholarship: $1,000 to $8,000 per year Dean’s Scholarship: $1,000 to $11,000 per year

Selective Scholarships

The Selective Scholarship Application (SSA) is used as the application for various IU Bloomington scholarships and programs. For a comprehensive list, please visit go.iu.edu/ssa. We’ll let you know in your admit email if you’re eligible to submit a SSA and what you need to do. Be sure to follow up with your recommenders to make sure your SSA is complete by the due date on the application.

Remember these deadlinesFinancial aid

October 1 The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available. Fill it out as soon as you can after you apply for admission.

April 15Make sure you’ve filed your FAFSA by this deadline so you’re eligible for the most need-based financial aid.

May 1 Pay your enrollment deposit to officially reserve your seat in next fall’s freshman class.

Application and scholarships

November 1 This is the early action (non-binding) deadline and scholarship deadline. Make sure you submit a complete application for admission (including official transcript, test scores, and IU-specific essay) by this date to be considered for IU Academic and Selective Scholarships.

January 17 If you met the November 1 deadline, you may submit updated official SAT and ACT scores until January 17 for additional scholarship consideration. We’ll evaluate updated scores on a rolling basis and notify you if you qualify.

February 1 This is the regular decision deadline. Make sure you submit a complete application for admission (including official transcript, test scores, and IU-specific essay) by this date.
