Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.
In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.
The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.
Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.
The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and
laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.
The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

Highland LakeGolf CourseThe Indiana Univer-
sity East golf teams
practice and play their
home meets at High-
land Lake Golf Course
in Richmond.
Highland Lake became
the home course for
IU East’s men’s and
women’s golf teams in
the spring of 2010.
The course is located
at 1972 Highland
Road just east of the
intersection of Inter-
state 70 and U.S.
Highway 27. The
course is just north of the IU East
campus. A good golfer could hit
a drive from IU East’s property
across Interstate 70 to Highland
Lake.
Highland Lake Golf Course opened
in 1972. The course was designed
by John Budzale. The wide open
course is built on relatively flat
terrain.
Large greens are the challenge at
Highland Lake. Par is 72 and the
course yardage is 6,981 from the
back tees. The course rating is
71.5 and the slope rating is 118.
The facility includes
an on-site driving
range and three prac-
tice greens.
Highland Lake Golf
Course is the mu-
nicipal golf course for
the City of Richmond
Parks and Recreation
Department.
IU East golf teams pre-
viously played at Lib-
erty Country Club and
the Elks Country Club.

Is Oregon in the Red Wolves’ destiny?
The Indiana University East men’s golf team hopes
its 2012 season concludes with a trip to Salem, Ore.,
site of the 2012 NAIA Men’s Golf National Champi-
onships.
The young but hungry Red Wolves aim to win the
program’s first Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Con-
ference championship since 2008 and the first NAIA
national tournament trip in the program’s five-year
history.
“We are looking forward to what could be one of the
most successful seasons in the history of the men’s
golf program,” said IU East coach Von Ebeling.
The Red Wolves warmed up for the 2012 season
with a successful fall campaign, highlighted by the
program’s first sub-300 team scores and first sub-70
individual rounds.
Those were the practice swings. Can the Red Wolves
do it again when their ultimate destiny is at stake?
The rosterOn paper, IU East lost its top three golfers from the
2011 spring season.
In reality, Ebeling now has 14 capable golfers and
the deepest talent pool in the program’s history.
“We are very deep,” Ebeling said. “These guys are
going to have to play hard at all times if they want to
keep their spots. There will always be someone push-
ing them to play better. I think this element of inter-
nal team competition will keep each player ready to
card better scores.”
IU East returns two of its top five players from the
2011 spring season.
Sophomore Justin Carter (Centerville, Ind./Center-
ville High School) and junior Brandon Loomis (Union
City, Ind./Union City Community High School) both
played in IU East’s top five throughout the spring of
2011.
Junior Zack Palmer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond High
School) was IU East’s No. 2 golfer in 2010 and re-
turns to the lineup after a redshirt season.
Sophomore Hubie Branstetter (Brookville, Ind./
Franklin County High School) had IU East’s No. 4
average in two tournaments last spring.
Sophomore Lee Oakes (Hagerstown, Ind./Hagerstown
High School) also earned a varsity letter.
IU East also boasts a “fantastic core” of freshmen.
The Red Wolves played with an all-freshman top five
at several meets during the 2011 fall season.
“I look for them to make an immediate impact,”
Ebeling said.
Luke Warren (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central
High School) emerged as the Red Wolves’ on-course
leader and shot a program-low 68 in September.

Cam Brower (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll High School),
the IU East golf program’s first Fort Wayne signee,
posted the Red Wolves’ lowest round at several fall
meets.
High school teammates Cameron Cox (Farmland,
Ind./Monroe Central High School) and Rhett Braun
(Parker City, Ind./Monroe Central High School) both
showed the ability to shoot in the 70s.
Levi Gough (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High
School) qualified for IU East’s top five for a majority
of the fall meets.
Drew Houck (Portland, Ind./Jay County High School)
was an Indiana academic all-state golfer and showed
the ability to crack the top five.
High school teammates Jordan Hiner (Greenfield,
Ind./Greenfield-Central High School) and Con-ner Pope (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central High
School) provided additional depth to the IU East lineup.
Joey Smart (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County High
School) joins the program for the spring season as
a redshirt freshman. Smart set most of the school
records during his career at Franklin County High
School.
“These players have stuck together and become good
friends,” Ebeling said. “I can tell they have started to
unite and develop a family atmosphere.”
The scheduleThe Red Wolves will play five tournaments in prepara-
tion for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-
ence meet in Prestonburg, Ky., in late April.
First-time visits to courses created by noted design-
ers Donald Ross and Pete Dye highlight the sched-
ule.
IU East plays at the Indiana Institute of Technol-
ogy Thrill at the Hill at The Donald Ross Course in
French Lick, Ind., on March 26 and 27.
The Red Wolves play at the Dye-designed Kampen
Course in West Lafayette, Ind., during the Taylor
Invitational on April 9 and 10.
“The players have been talking about these events
and are excited about the opportunity to be chal-
lenged there,” Ebeling said.
The schedule includes traditional stops at tourna-
ments hosted by KIAC members Brescia University,
Berea College and Cincinnati Christian University.
The KIAC tournament will be held at Stone Crest
Golf Course, Prestonburg, Ky. The course is de-
scribed as a championship caliber links style course
carved out of a reclaimed surface coal mine. Players
can see for 50 miles in any direction from virtually
any spot on the 7,000-plus-yard course.
The goalsThe Red Wolves want to hit the Oregon trail.

Salem, Ore.
IU East was picked to finish second in the KIAC in a
preseason vote of the league’s coaches, but the Red
Wolves think they are “destined” to make a run at the
top spot.
“The players feel destined to make a push at the end
of the spring season to win the KIAC and move on to
the national tournament,” Ebeling said. “Our goal is
to get better each week and play our best at the con-
ference tournament.”

Von Ebeling was named
head coach of the Indi-
ana University East men’s
and women’s golf teams
before the 2009-10 school
year.
“Von is very passionate about coaching and working
with young people,” IU East athletic director Mark
Hester said. “He is an extremely hard worker and is a
welcome part of the coaching staff.”
Ebeling led the IU East men’s golf team to a second-
place finish in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference during his first season. He also coached

programs also won the national Buffalo Funds Five
Star Champions of Character Award for the 2010-11
school year.
“I joined the athletic department at IU East to help
create a framework that integrates a set of core val-
ues,” Ebeling says.
“I am here to further develop a vision which focuses
on the athletes and systematically teaches them
life skills and character. I’m focused on continuing
to work in an integrity-based program which helps
student-athletes return, academically eligible, each
and every season until graduating.”
Ebeling is a Ball State University graduate and cur-
rently resides in Darke County. He taught math to
special education students in an area school prior to
coming to IU East.
Ebeling traces his athletic roots to age 6, when he
started hanging around the local high school’s cross
country team. He swam competitively as a youngster.
He played football, basketball and baseball at Union
City Community High School.
Ebeling has served as an assistant football coach at
Union City and Mississinawa Valley (Ohio) and as a

A day-by-day look back
at the 2011 Indiana Uni-
versity East men’s golf
season. The Red Wolves
finished fourth in the
Kentucky Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference.
Freshman Wes Drees
made the all-conference
team and finished sec-
ond in the league’s
Player of the Year stand-
ings. Senior Nick Ary was
third in the league Player
of the Year standings.
March 19 -Swinging into secondThe Indiana University East men’s golf team finished
second out of seven teams in the Berea College
Spring Tee-Off with the help of an record-tying perfor-
mance by senior Nick Ary. Ary placed second overall,
only two strokes behind winner Dean Hoare from
Bryan College. Ary finished with a two-day score of
147 (including a 74 in the final round), matching his
own school record for lowest 36-hole score. Freshman
Wes Drees shot 80 in the final round and finished
fifth with a score of 153. Both Ary and Drees made
the all-tournament team. The Red Wolves concluded
the two-day, 36-hole event with a team score of 657.
April 8 - Close at homeOnly 12 strokes separated the four men’s teams
who participated in the Indiana University East Red
Wolves Spring Invitational. Competition was close for
the men’s individual crown, with four players tying
for second place. The Red Wolves shot 320 and got
within 12 shots of the two-time defending Kentucky
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Bres-
cia. This was IU East’s best score since 2009 and
the closest the Red Wolves had come to beating the
Bearcats in the past two years. Unfortunately, Asbury
University and Cincinnati Christian got closer, push-
ing IU East back to their 4th place finish. Senior
Nick Ary tied for second with a score of 75. Fresh-
man Wes Drees finished sixth with a score of 76.
Derrick McNeely finished with an 18-hole career low
of 80, and tied for tenth place.
