The Indiana State Head CoachIndiana State head coach Greg Lansing (South Dakota, 1990) is 113-92 (.551) overall in his seventh season as a head coach. He is 60-48 all-time in MVC games, including a 41-13 mark at home and a 19-35 record on the road. During his career, he is 65-22 in all home games, 32-52 on the road, 16-18 in neutral court contests and 35-23 in games decided by five points or less. Lansing is 0-3 against Butler and is 0-1 against the Bulldogs at home. With the Trees, Lansing is 8-8 in overtime games and 77-9 when holding teams to 63 points or less. Lansing led the Sycamores to the postseason in each of his first four seasons at the helm (2011 NCAA, 2012 CIT, 2013, 2014 NIT). Lansing is the second head coach to lead the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament in their rookie campaign in the history of the program, with the other being Bill Hodges leading ISU to a 33-1 record and a Final Four appearance in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. Lansing was just the 14th rookie head coach in the history of the MVC to lead his team to 20 victories during their debut season. Lansing is tied with Bill Hodges and Royce Waltman for most victories over a nationally-ranked team (four) in the history of the program. Lansing is currently sixth on the Indiana State all-time coaching victories list and needs seven more to tie John Longfellow for fifth.

Television ParticularsThe Sycamores’ game against Butler will be televised world-wide on The Valley on ESPN3.

A Little HistoryIndiana State is currently in its 121st season of college basketball at the school. The Sycamores are 1,460-1,259 all-time on the hardwood.

Indiana State In The MVC/Mountain West Conference Challenge SeriesIn 2016-17, the Missouri Valley/Mountain West Conference Challenge has returned for the second consec-utive year for all of the 10 member schools. The Sycamores are 3-3 all-time in the challenge after defeating Utah State in thrilling fashion by the score of 62-61 on Saturday night in Logan, Utah. The Sycamores have now won each of its last two games in the challenge after also beating Wyoming inside Hulman Center last season. Indiana State won its initial game in the challenge against Colorado State (at home) in 2009 then dropped road contests to Wyoming and Boise State as well an overtime decision to New Mexico State in 2012.

Close Game Alert!Games involving Indiana State so far this season have, for the most part, come down to the wire. Six of the first eight games have been decided by just one possession or have entered overtime. The Sycamores opened the season with back-to-back overtime games. It is the first time Indiana State has played con-secutive overtime games since the 1986-87 season when they dropped extra time decisions against Saint Louis and Eastern Illinois. It is the fifth time in school history the program has played back-to-back over-time games and the first time it has happened in the first two games of the year. ISU began the year with road games against Northern Illinois and Ball State -- both of which went an extra five minutes. All three of the Sycamores’ games in Orlando were decided by one possession as was its game on Saturday at Utah State which saw TJ Bell hit the game-winning lay-up with two seconds on the clock.

342016-17 Indiana State Basketball Notes

Scott’s 3-Point Shooting Moving Up ISU Career Ranks; Closing In On 1,000 Career PointsIndiana State junior Brenton Scott is continuing to make his mark on the Sycamore Basketball Record Book in regards to 3-point shooting and points scored. Through 71 career games he has hit 157 3-point-ers which ranks fourth-best all-time and is just four behind Eddie Bird (1987-91) for third place. He has attempted 393 3-pointers in his career which ranks fifth and needs 24 more attempts to move past Chad Adkins (1996-99) for fourth place. Scott also has scored 971 points in his career and needs only 29 more to become the 38th member of the Indiana State Basketball 1,000 Point Club. Scott will be the 13th mem-ber of the club (34.2 percent) either coached or recruited by current head coach Greg Lansing, the most members that one coach can claim as one of their pupils in the illustrious club.

Brenton Scott Leading MVC In ScoringIndiana State junior Brenton Scott averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds as the Sycamores swept a pair of games against Northern Illinois and became one of the few teams to win at Utah State this past week. Scott led the Sycamores with 18 points and seven rebounds in the rare win at Utah State as he hit a pair of late game 3-pointers to set up TJ Bell’s heroic lay-up with two seconds remaining. Scott hit four 3-pointers on the road against the Aggies and added three assists as well. Against NIU, Scott scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds to go with two assists and two steals. He also connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the win. Through eight games, Scott is averaging 19.1 points per game which leads the Missouri Valley Conference.

Long Time Series Against Butler Continues Inside Hulman CenterButler opens a 70-56 edge in the all-time series against Indiana State and the Bulldogs are one of six programs that the Sycamores have faced off against more than 100 times in the history of the program. The Bulldogs have won all four of the meetings since the Sycamores took a 72-64 decision inside Hulman Center on December 9, 2006 when the Bulldogs were ranked No. 15 nationally. That win capped an im-pressive three-game win streak of the Bulldogs which included a thrilling 59-58 buzzer-beating win in 2005 and a 57-54 thriller in 2004.

Sycamores Seek School Record Fifth Victory Over Nationally-Ranked Team Under LansingIndiana State looks to end a skid of nine loses to nationally-ranked teams when No. 15/16 Butler comes to Hulman Center on Wednesday night. Coach Lansing has led the Sycamores to a school-record tying four victories against nationally-ranked teams during his time at the helm of the program. He is tied for Bill Hodges (head coach of the Dream Team in 1978-79) and Royce Waltman (head coach of the Sycamores during back-to-back NCAA Tourney trips in 2000 & 2001) for the most in program history. Indiana State’s last win over a nationally-ranked team came on the road against No. 21 Notre Dame on Nov. 17, 2013 (83-70 victory). It’s last win against a ranked team in Hulman Center was on February 6, 2013 against No. 13 Creighton. Just over 10 years ago on December 9, 2006, the Sycamores defeated No. 15 Butler inside Hulman Center by the score of 72-64.

TJ Bell Earns First Career Double-Double Against The CyclonesIndiana State senior TJ Bell enjoyed a resurgence this week as the Sycamores participated in the Advocare Invitational. He averaged 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as she hit 15-of-24 shots from the field (.625) with six blocked shots and three steals. Bell opened the week with his first career double-double against No. 21 Iowa State with 11 points and 10 rebounds, both of which were career highs. He hit 5-of-7 shots from the field (.714 percent) in the narrow 2-point loss to the Cyclones. He went on to record eight points and six rebounds against Stanford before tallying 14 points with six rebounds against Quinnipiac. For the third time in the last four games, Bell hit 8-of-11 shots from the field to set a new career-high of 17 points in Wednesday night’s win over Northern Illinois.

Oh So Close! Everett Clemons Nearly Posts Triple-Double At Ball StateIndiana State senior guard Everett Clemons scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record the Sycamores’ first double-double of the season as part of the overtime win over Ball State. He also posted a career-best nine assists (of the team’s 13) and narrowly missed his first career triple-double and the first by a Sycamore since Jake Odum did it in the 2011 Old Spice Classic (now Advocare Invitational). There have been just two triple-doubles in the MVC era with Odum owning one as well as Larry Bird in 1979.

An Indiana State Win Over Butler Would ...

• Snap a four-game skid against the Bulldogs and be the Sycamores’ first victory in the series

since a win at Hulman Center against No. 15 Butler in 2006.

• Snap a nine-game skid against nationally-ranked teams since a road victory over Notre Dame

in 2013. Give head coach Greg Lansing the school record for victories over a nationally-ranked

team with five.

Currently, Clemons is averaging 6.1 rebounds per game which is eighth-best in the league while he leads the MVC with a 5.6 assists per game average.

63 Is The Magic NumberThe Sycamores win by the score of 62-61 on December 3 at Utah State was ISU’s third this season in which they held an opponent to 63 points or less and earned the victory. Under seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 77-9 when allowing less than 63 points to the opposition (including a 18-0 mark when holding teams to 53 or less).

Good Starter On The BatteryIndiana State’s starting five outscored the opposition’s top five twice this season and earned the win. Under seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 72-22 when the ISU starting five scores more than their opponent’s starters after doing so in the win over Northern Illinois on November 30.

Sycamores Have Had Success In Bounce Back Games Under Head Coach Greg LansingIn the last seven seasons, the Sycamores have been known as a team with the ability to bounce back from defeat. Since the 2010-11 campaign, the Sycamores are 51-39 in a game which follows a loss. Indiana State last rebounded from a loss against Quinnipiac to down Northern Illinois by the score of 63-52 on November 30.

Brenton Scott Named To Preseason All-MVC First TeamIndiana State junior Brenton Scott was named to the Preseason All-MVC First Team as announced by the league office on October 25. Scott, who is the only returning first or second team all-conference selection from last season, picked up his first ever all-conference honor last year after being named The Valley’s Fresh-man Of The Year in 2015. The Sycamores have had at least one all-conference selection in each of the last nine years which is the third-longest active streak among the current membership of the MVC.

Sycamores Picked To Finish Sixth In Missouri Valley Conference RaceIndiana State was picked to finish sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference according to a preseason poll of league head coaches, sports information directors and a media panel. Defending league champion Wichita State was also picked to win the league. The Sycamores are coming a 15-17 record last year and a sixth place finish in the MVC race. Indiana State reached the semifinals of Arch Madness of the fourth time in the last six years last season.

Brandon Murphy An MVC Scholar-Athlete SelectionIndiana State sophomore Brandon Murphy carries a 3.25 GPA in Communications and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team as an honorable mention selection. Murphy averaged 4.9 points and 4.2 re-bounds per game. In MVC contests, Murphy averaged 5.3 rebounds per game to rank 12th in the league. He pulled down 2.0 offensive rebounds per game to rank third while his 2.4 offensive rebounds per MVC game was second in the conference rankings. Murphy posted his first career double figure scoring output with 10 points in a home court victory over Wyoming. He tallied a career-high 12 rebounds in an overtime contest at Missouri State.

Sycamores Own Third-Best Record In MVC Play Over Last Six SeasonsIn the last six seasons under the direction of head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores have amassed a total of 60 Missouri Valley Conference victories. Those 60 MVC wins by coach Lansing are second-most in the history of the program as he trails only Royce Waltman who won 69 league games during his tenure. Addi-tionally, the 60 MVC victories for the Sycamores since the 2010-11 campaign ranks third-best among current conference members. Wichita State’s 93 leads the league while Indiana State has 60 and Northern Iowa is second with 67. The next closest program behind the Sycamores in Evansville which owns 55 victories while Illinois State owns 53.

Greg Lansing Selected For Induction Into Iowa High School Basketball Hall Of FameIndiana State head coach Greg Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Bas-ketball Hall of Fame as part of their 2016 class. Lansing and the other selected inductees were honored individually at halftime of the Iowa Class 4A State Championship Game at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on March 12. The IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame is the highest honor the Iowa High School Board of Control can bestow on a high school coach or former player. Lansing graduated from Harlan High School in 1986, where he was coached by his father Dave, who was inducted into the IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 as a coach. The Lansing father/son combination of Dave and Greg are just the 10th father/son duo to both be inducted into the Hall of Fame since 1969. Sycamore Success Inside Hulman Center Under Greg LansingThe Sycamores are 64-22 (.744) inside Hulman Center under sixth-year head coach Greg Lansing. The Syca-mores have won 54 of their last 72 home games. Additionally, the Sycamores have won 41 of their last 54 MVC games at home. The Sycamores were 10-4 at home last season. Indiana State owns a win in their last meeting with every MVC opponent at home with the exception of Wichita State and Southern Illinois. The longest stretch of consecutive home victories is against Illinois State which has now reached nine. Indiana State is a perfect 2-0 this season at home. Up NextIndiana State plays its second consecutive game inside Hulman Center when they host Western Kentucky on Sunday, December 11 at 4:30 p.m. (ET). Sycamore fans are encouraged to enjoy the later tip-off time to enjoy the Indianapolis Colts game and then come out to support the Sycamores!

MVC OVERALL

The Last Time Out ...

LOGAN, Utah -- Indiana State battled back from as many as 16 points down and won a lay-up from senior TJ Bell with two seconds remaining as the Sycamores escaped Utah State with the 62-61 victory in front of 7,064 fans. The win gave the Missouri Valley Conference a 5-4 lead after the first nine games of the MVC/Mountain West Conference Challenge. Brenton Scott led the team with 18 points as he hit four 3-pointers to move into fourth on the ISU career chart with 157 over his first 71 games. Van Scyoc scored 14 points for the fourth time this sea-son and tied the game with a big four-point play in the final moments. Donovan Franklin scored eight points while Bell’s only field goal of the game was the game winner with two seconds remaining. The Sycamores overcame a slow shooting start (8-of-30 for 26.7 percent in the first half ) to finish the game with a 37.7 mark from the field. The Sycamores hit 11 3-pointers in the game, including two in a row by Scott down the stretch. Utah State held a 42-39 advantage on the boards but it was the Sycamores with a 7-4 lead in second chance points. Indiana State shared the ball well as they had 17 assists on 23 made field goals, including a game-high eight assists from Clemons. Indiana State made it a 12-0 run in the second half when Van Scyoc hit his second 3-pointer after the break to draw within 39-37 with 13:06 left to go in the game. Utah State hit a 3-pointer to end the Sycamore run and their nearly seven minute drought to restore a 42-37 lead. Brenton Scott answered with his own 3-pointer at the 9:25 mark to once again draw within 42-40. After the Aggies missed the front end of a one-and-one, Scott tied things up at 42 with a left handed lay-up. Utah State’s Julion Pearre scored his first points of the game with a 3-pointer at the 8:03 mark as Utah State regained the lead at 45-42. The Aggies missed a pair of free throw attempts late, but Donovan Franklin converted both of his at the 7:19 mark and the Utah State lead was down to 47-44. The two teams then traded baskets as Van Scyoc became the first Sycamore to reach double figure scoring with a hook shot as the clock ticked under the six minute mark and the Utah State lead was down to 47-46. Jalen Moore hit a 3-pointer at the 5:13 mark as the Aggies stretched their lead out to 50-46. Scott then hit a two 3-pointers as Utah State hit two inside the arch as his fourth of the game at the 3:31 mark got the Aggie lead down to 54-52. Scott hit a tough jumper with 2:29 on the clock to answer a score from the Aggies as the Utah State lead was trimmed down to 56-54. After the Aggies hit a pair at the free throw line, Van Scyoc hit a 3-pointer with 2:07 to go and made it a four-point play after the foul to knot the game at 58. The Aggie took a one-point lead at 59-58 but Scott laid it in on the next trip down the floor for the 60-59 lead with 1:40 remaining. The Sycamores got a coveted defensive stop on a big rebound from Bell and called a timeout. The Sycamores came up empty twice but also got another stop on a Paige defensive rebound as they held a 60-59 lead with 19.7 seconds left while Utah State had the ball. Indiana State was whistled for a foul to send Shane Rector to the charity stripe after ISU called their final timeout. Rector hit both of the free throws with 9.8 seconds to go as the Aggies took a 61-60 lead, setting up a another game in which the Sycamores had the ball for the final possession. Brenton Scott drove the length of the floor and lost control of the ball after getting into traffic. Clem-ons picked up the loose ball and made a bounce pass across the lane to a wide open TJ Bell who hit the game-winning buzzer beater with two seconds left. ISU got back on defense and Utah State’s last gasp at the end of the clock fell short for the 62-61 lead. Laquarious Paige scored first in the contest with a jumper before Donovan Franklin checked into the game at the 16:26 mark of the first half and knocked down a 3-pointer which tied the contest at six. The Aggies scored nine points in a row to run their lead out to 15-6 before Franklin ended the drought with his second triple of the opening half to get the Sycamores within 15-9 at the 13:15 mark. Utah State ran its lead out to 23-9 before Scott connected on his first 3-pointer of the game with 8:34 remaining to get the Sycamores within 11 points and to answer an 8-0 USU run. Jordan Barnes made it four 3-pointers out of their first five made baskets when he connected from long range in transition at the 6:08 mark to get within 26-15. The Aggies scored the next five, but Matt Van Scyoc hit a runner in the paint with 2:34 on the clock to get ISU within 31-17. Clemons made a nifty move in a drive down the baseline with just over one minute remaining to trim the deficit down to 14 points. After an Aggie turnover, Emondre Rickman scored inside to get within 33-21. They had a final look at the basket, but were not able to connect as Utah State led 35-21 at the half. Donovan Franklin led the way for the Sycamores with six points as ISU was limited to just 6-of-27 shooting (22.2 percent). The Sycamores made a cou-ple adjustments to the sec-ond half starting lineup and went to one of the newbies on the first possession as Rick-man scored inside to trim the Utah State lead down to 35-23. The Sycamores answered an Aggie bucket with a Paige driving lay-up with just un-der 18 minutes remaining to draw within 37-25. Clemons tipped a pass and the ball then bounced between the two teams wildly until he got the pay-off at the 17:03 mark to convert the conventional 3-point play and further trimmed the USU advantage down to 39-28. Barnes hit his second 3-pointer of the game at the 15:45 mark to get within single digits at 39-31. Matt Van Scyoc then hit a big 3-pointer at the 14:45 mark and the 9-0 run by the Sycamores trimmed the Utah State lead down to 39-34. Shane Rector led Utah State with 14 points.

742016-17 Indiana State Basketball Notes

Greg Lansing is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at Indiana State. He previously spent eight seasons with the program as an assistant coach, including three as associate head coach. Lansing (South Dakota, 1990) is 113-92 (.551) at the helm of the Sycamore basketball program. He owns a mark of 60-48 in MVC games, including a 41-13 record

at home. During his career, he is 65-22 in all home games with 32 road victories to his credit and is 35-23 in games decided by five points or less. Lansing is 8-5 in the MVC Tournament, with four of those victories coming as the lower seeded team. Indiana State’s game at Iowa in the 2014 NIT was Lansing’s 100th as Indiana State head coach. His 113 career victories rank sixth on ISU’s all-time win list. He is the second head coach to lead the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament in their rookie campaign in the history of the program, with the other being Bill Hodges leading ISU to a 33-1 record and a Final Four appearance in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. Lansing was just the 14th rookie head coach in the history of the MVC to lead his team to 20 victories during their debut season. With a 23-win campaign in 2013-14, the Sycamores reached the 17-victory mark for the fifth consecutive season and notched five consecutive winning seasons for the first time in over 40 years under Lansing’s leadership. Lansing’s 60 career Missouri Valley Conference victories rank second in program history to Royce Walt-man’s school record of 69. Over the last six years, the Sycamores’ 60 league victories are third most among the current membership. Under Lansing, the Sycamores have earned four victories over nationally-ranked teams. Those four victories are tied with Bill Hodges and Royce Waltman for the most in program history. ISU won at No. 14 Wichita State (in 2013) -- its best-victory over a nationally-ranked team on the road since 1999 and downed No. 13 Creighton (2013) at home, the highest ranked team to fall to Indiana State inside Hulman Center since joining the MVC. The Sycamores also have won at Vanderbilt (2012) and Notre Dame (2013) under Lansing while those opponents were ranked in the Top 25. In 2014-15, the Sycamores entered the season with a roster that featured seven newcomers. Despite a slow start in non-conference play, Lansing led the Sycamores to an 11-7 mark in the Missouri Valley Confer-ence and earned the No. 3 seed at Arch Madness. Indiana State has earned at least the No. 3 seed at the conference tournament in three of Lansing’s six seasons as head coach. In 2015-16, Devonte Brown and Brenton Scott were each named to the All-MVC Second Team while Everett Clemons took a spot on the MVC All-Newcomer squad. Brandon Murphy was selected as a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete. The Sycamores advanced to the MVC Tournament semifinals for the fourth time under Lansing with a win over Illinois State as the sixth seed. Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame in March of 2016. He and his father Dave are just the 10th father/son combination to be inducted into that Hall of Fame. He saw several Sycamores earn postseason recognition from the league office in 2015. Devonte Brown was named the league’s Most Improved Player and was tabbed to the All-MVC Second Team. Brenton Scott picked up the program’s third-ever MVC Freshman of the Year honor while Tre’ Bennett was selected to the All-Bench Team. Justin Gant and Jake Kitchell were each First Team selections as MVC Scholar-Athletes. In 2012-13, Indiana State finished 18-15 and advanced to the semifinals of the MVC Tournament on the strength of a 51-50 victory over Evansville. In 2013-14, the Sycamores finished with a 23-11 mark and reached the second MVC Tournament Championship game in four seasons under Lansing. The Sycamores played in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 2013 & 2014 and reached the postseason five consecutive seasons, including in each of the first four years with Lansing at the helm. In 2013-14, the Sycamores finished in the Top 5 nationally for most true road victories with nine. Included in that total was a road victory over nationally-ranked Notre Dame, giving the program at least one victory over a nationally-ranked opponent in each of Lansing’s first four seasons as head coach. Jake Odum was a repeat selection on the All-MVC First Team and became the first player in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to record at least 500 career assists and 500 career made free throws. Odum finished as the school’s record holder for career free throws made and attempted. He also wrapped up his career as the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer and was in the Top 4 in both assists and steals. Odum also was named to the NABC All-District Team and was a Mid-Major All-American for the second consecutive season. Khristian Smith earned his second consecutive nod on the MVC All-Bench Team and was selected as the league’s Sixth Man Of The Year. Manny Arop added an honorable mention all-conference selection while Justin Gant and Lucas Eitel were each named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.

842016-17 Indiana State Basketball Notes

Indiana State’s three victories over the RPI Top 50 were tied for the most of any one in the Missouri Valley Confer-ence in 2012-13. Creighton, the league’s tournament and regular season champion also owned three. Indiana State owned a victory in the Diamond Head Classic against ACC Champion Miami and also took down Ole Miss to finish third in the event while Jake Odum was named to the All-Tournament Team. Odum also became the first Sycamore to appear on the All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team since 2001 and just the sixth all-time. Freshman Khristian Smith was a member of the MVC All-Bench Team while Lucas Eitel and Justin Gant were named Second Team MVC Scholar-Athletes. Addition-ally, Odum was named to the 2013 Lou Henson All-America Team as well as the 2013 NABC All-District 16 First Team. The Sycamores are 63-22 (.741) inside Hulman Center under Lansing. Additionally, the Sycamores are 74-9 with Lansing as head coach when allowing less than 63 points to the opposition (including a 17-0 mark when holding teams to 53 or less). Indiana State did not allow a made 3-pointer at Illinois State on January 23, 2013 as the Redbirds went 0-for-13 from long range on their home court and snapped a string of over 400 games with one which dated back to 1999. It marked the second time during the 2012-13 season that the Sycamores did not allow a trey in a game as nationally-ranked Miami went 0-of-15 on December 25, 2012 in the consolation game of the Diamond Head Classic. In 2011-12, the Sycamores finished the year with an 18-15 record and advanced to the CollegeInsiders.com Postsea-son Tournament. Jake Odum was one of just four players nationally to average at least 10 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists per game during his sophomore season and was a Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as well as Second Team All-District selection as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Sycamores downed No. 25 nationally-ranked Vander-bilt on the road and finished third at the Old Spice Classic -- the best-ever finish by a MVC team in the event. Lansing burst onto the scene as a rookie head coach with the Sycamore basketball program in 2010-11 as he became just the second-ever Indiana State head coach to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. He led the team to a 20-14 record, becoming just the 14th head coach in the history of the Missouri Valley Conference to lead a team to 20 or more victories in their first year at the helm. ISU reached the NCAA Tournament and took on Syracuse in Cleveland, Ohio based on the program’s third-ever MVC Tournament Championship won at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. ISU raced to the title with victories over No. 6 Evansville, No. 2 Wichita State and No. 1 Missouri State in the Championship Game as the Sycamores entered as the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Freshman Jake Odum was named to the MVC All-Tournament Team. Odum was named a CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Freshman All-American and was named an All-MVC Hon-orable Mention selection as well as a member of the MVC All-Freshman, All-Newcomer and All-Defense Team. Carl Richard was also named to the All-MVC’s Honorable Mention squad. ISU took two thrilling buzzer beating victories over league foes Missouri State and Creighton during the regular season at Hulman Center. The buzzer beater over Creighton by Richard was voted the No. 2 play of the weekend by ESPN’s SportsCenter. In 2009-10 the Sycamores overcame a ton of adversity to still put together its best season in nearly a decade under the professional leadership of the ISU coaching staff. Despite only having its full complement of student-athletes for just 28 minutes of the rough and tumble Missouri Valley Con-ference slate, the Sycamores still recorded its first winning season since 2001 as they finished 17-15. ISU also finished the year with a 9-9 record in league play, bolstering the Syca-mores out of the MVC Opening Round at the State Farm Mis-souri Valley Conference Tournament by securing the league’s No. 6 seed after finishing in a tie for fifth in the standings.

Starting guard Jake Kelly suffered a season ending knee injury with 12 minutes left in the confer-ence opener at Southern Illinois and subsequently also lost Dwayne Lathan and Harry Marshall for extended periods over the course of the year. Marshall, who was the heart and soul of the team, led the MVC in scoring in league contests with a 16.0 ppg average. Marshall was tabbed Second Team All-MVC and was named to the MVC’s All-Defensive Team after turning in shutdown performances against most of the league’s all-conference opposition. Running a well-rounded program, the Sycamores also two representatives on the MVC’s Scholar Athlete Team as both Jordan Printy and Aaron Carter took those plaudits. The payoff for the Sycamores continued as ISU reached postseason play for the first since 2001 when they accepted a bid to the 2010 College Basketball Invitational, appearing in a road contest at Saint Louis. Lansing has been a key recruiter for many talented student-athletes. Lansing has also been a major part of the several all-conference accolades for several players, including Harry Marshall and Jay Tunnell, who took All-MVC honors following the 2008-09 campaign. During each year of Lansing’s tenure, the Sycamores have participated in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Challenge. For each of the last three years, Lansing has led a successful challenge to the state’s lawmakers to wear sneakers with their suits during that same time frame as part of the program to promote cancer awareness. Through an invitation from State Representative Bob Heaton, who played for ISU on the 1978-79 team which advanced to the NCAA Final Four, ISU head coach Greg Lansing has visited the State House leaders to participate in the challenge. Lansing returned to Indiana State after a seven-year stint with the Iowa Hawkeyes. During Lansing’s seven years as assistant coach at Iowa, the Hawkeye’s went 135-92, received three NCAA Tournament invitations, three NIT appearances and won a pair of Big Ten tournament titles, the first of which came on four wins in four games making Iowa the first team in the Big Ten to accomplish such a feat. In 2005-06, Iowa earned a 25-9 record, the second-most wins in school history, the first undefeated (17-0) home record in the school’s history and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa earned seven All-Big Ten selections, 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections and four Academic All-Americans. Lansing coached four of the last five Big Ten rebounding champions, three straight conference leaders in blocked shots and, the league’s 2005-06 defensive player of the year. Three of his student-athletes reached the NBA and two from the 2005-06 team were invited to NBA camps. In Lansing’s final two seasons of his first stint at Indiana State, the Sycamores posted back-to-back winning campaigns for the first time since 1979 and 1980. When the Sycamores posted a 16-11 record in 1998 it marked the first winning season for Indiana State since 1980. Indiana State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2000 and 2001. Prior to joining the staff at Indiana State, Lansing was the head basketball coach at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Roosevelt had not had a winning season in 12 years before Lansing’s initial season. The Roughriders went on to have back-to-back winning seasons under Greg’s direction. Lansing earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Dakota in 1990 and a master’s degree in counseling from USD in 1992. As a member of the Coyote basketball team Lansing helped South Dakota reach the NCAA Division II Tournament during his junior and senior seasons, the first NCAA invitation for USD since 1954. He was twice named the South Dakota Defensive Player of the Year. Greg is currently ranked among the leaders in career assists at USD. Following his playing career, Lansing served as a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota for two seasons. In 1992-93 he was a full-time assistant. Greg’s father, Dave Lansing, coached high school basketball for 33 years in Iowa. Dave Lansing was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame during the 1999 Iowa boys state basketball tournament. Lansing’s dad, his mother, Diane, his sister, Angela, and his nephew, Jordan, live in West Des Moines. His brother, Steve, is the head basketball coach at Faribault High School (Minn.), where he was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2004.
