A Tribute to DadA tribute I read at the funeral of my Father, Bobby Keith Eckart Sr., this last November. He passed
away on November 27, 2007. My Dad taught me several “real life” lessons as I reflect on his life today.
By: Dr. Mark
1. He taught me never to give up. Four years ago a car-
diologist in Jewish Hospital told us that Dad’s time was
done and he would pass away within a day or two. Well,
God had other plans. Dad told one of us kids that he
wanted to get out of there because they were putting too
many white sheets over people! Yes he was tenacious, and I
guess you could say a fighter. He fought to live and never
gave up easily in a lot of areas in life. Our house was three
miles from Corydon, and more than once when the snow
was too deep to get out our hilly road, Daddy walked to
Corydon to catch a ride so he could go to work.
2. He taught me to work hard. I still remember those
cucumbers that had to be picked “early in the morning” so
they wouldn’t grow too large. The smaller they were the
more money they brought. Picking cucumbers is fine but
two acres of them does make a difference. Dad also always
had a big garden and expected us kids to help make sure the
weeds were kept out. For a few years he worked two jobs
from 7 AM to 10 or 11 at night to keep food on the table.
The last day I saw him alive (Thanksgiving) I thanked him
for all the sacrifices he made raising us, and he told me with
a tear in his eye, “If I could do it all over again I would.”
3. He taught me to obey. One year for Christmas I got a
new air-pellet rifle. Uncle Kelso was there, and he helped
me get it loaded, and somehow the gun went off in our
house. I think the pellet is still lodged in the foot board of
Dad & Mom’s bed. I was always able to blame Uncle Kelso
for this episode! My Dad told me to have fun with the gun
but to never shoot red birds that loved to hang around our
house. One day while outside with my gun I saw a beauti-
ful red bird perched on a phone line. After looking over
both shoulders I saw no one so decided I would try to make
there be one less red bird in the world. I did. Everything
was fine until I looked up and saw Dad looking out a side
window of the house. Believe me after I got that spanking I
deserved I never shot anymore red birds.
4. He taught me to have fun. At our house we had a lot
of fun times. Many of you have been there to participate.
We used to play that annoying “beep beep” game. You
would have had to have been there to understand why I
called it annoying. It was annoying but also fun. On Friday
night we used to call it Friday fun night. Daddy would get
paid and often stop in and get a bucket of that “healthy”
Kentucky Fried Chicken, and we would have several
friends over and what fun memories we made. I worry at
times with remote controls, joy sticks, a computer mouse,
and iPod ear phones stuck in our ears that my generation
and the one following me do not take enough time to en-
joy each other. We didn’t have much money, but we on
occasion would have a designated night to have a blast at
our household. On Thanksgiving Day we went to MI to
visit with Dad. It came lunch time and Josh my son and I
were leaving to go get something to eat. I told Dad where
I was going and that I would be back soon. He then threw
me a surprise when he asked, “Can I go with you?” After
swallowing hard I said, “Well, Dad, they will bring you a
turkey lunch here and we will be back soon.” He chuck-
led and then looked the other way. He always enjoyed be-
ing around people and had more telephone/coon hunting
buddies then you would believe.
5. He taught me to know God. Like a lot of us Dad had
some struggles spiritually. But as a small boy I remember
kneeling around the bed, and he would often pray a
prayer like this, “Dear God some way some how help all
of us here to make it to heaven someday.” The last few
months of his life it seemed he drew closer to the Lord.
My brother James is a pastor, and he said Dad gave some
great testimonies at his church within the last few weeks. I
talked with him Thursday and he confirmed with me that
he was ready to meet Jesus. He always wanted to make
sure that we kids went to church camp each summer. I
would like to echo his prayer today for us. I pray, “Dear
God some way some how help all of us here to make it to
heaven someday.” Nothing else in life matters if we miss
heaven. By the way, Dad, when I make it to heaven by
God’ s grace we can go to lunch and never have to say
good bye again.
We loved
you Dad. You
will be missed
by all of us. I
pray I can do as
good of job
pass ing on
these principles
to my children
as you did to
me.
