COACHES CORNER - TIM NONTE - h.o.f. 1994
“MTT”, a.k.a., “Mule Turd Theater”
Tim Nonte
I have undoubtedly read about the vast array of serious drills and pored through plenty of helpful information from all us old coaches and I certainly know these sources are valuable to all the new “young buck” coaches - after all, I was a very intense coach for many, many years, but as time went on, I found a person also needs a sense of humor - sometimes during the heat of the battle.
Suffice it to say: throwing the ball away used to drive me nuts; I’m unsure what year in my coaching tenure it was, but I do recall that during a team butt-chewing after a particularly sloppy game, I expressed in sarcasm just what they looked like on the field and related the story of slinging mule turds in my youth. I told them that, while watching their game, my mind flashed back to a simpler time of my life – back when I was six or seven years old on my grandpa’s farm. See, my brother, Tony, and I used to slide down haystacks, climb apple trees, skinny-dip in the watering trough, throw corncobs at a mean-ass rooster and pull some outhouse pranks – well, on second thought, I won’t go there.
One afternoon, when my brother and I had exhausted our supply of mischievous behavior, we ended up in the barn lot. There, Grandpa had a couple of mules and a barnyard - filled with lots of dried mule turds just a wee bit smaller than the size of baseballs. Needless to say, I hit Tony with a dried mule turd, and so, then, all hell broke loose. Let’s put it this way – you have not lived until you have been involved in a game of throwing mule turds at one another. Sometimes, they are a little fresh on the bottom and that makes it even better.
Well, slinging mule turds and dodging those suckers makes for more erratic throws than normal, and that is exactly what my team looked like at a couple of points in the game. To be honest, no one dared to laugh, but a few games later, the team committed another poor overthrow and out of our dugout, I heard someone exclaim: “Mule Turd Theater.” The phrase quickly stuck with our program and me.
The act of a team’s play corresponds with the innings - for example, inning two is Act 2. Scene 1 is the team’s first overthrow, Scene 2 the second, etc. Real “MTT” typically has to feature two consecutive bad throws on the same play - most scenarios involve the overthrow at first and a follow-up bad throw to second in attempting to get the runner. Another possibility occurs when there is an errant throw to second on a steal followed by another wild throw to third - three in a row on the same play is Academy Award “Oscar” worthy and can be seen occasionally on the bunt-home run at the Little League levels.
The moral of my story: Cleaning up for me and my brother only meant heading back to the watering trough—with you coaches, just stop raising hell and start using the expression: “Just make the next play.” As coaches, we make out the line-up and ultimately what we put out there on the field must be the best we have - so raising hell is futile; cleaning up your “MTT” game should take place in practice. In the mid 70’s at the old Jasper clinic I listened to a great presentation by coaching legend Jim Reinebold of South Bend Clay on “How to Play Catch and Throw”. It did not totally cure MTT, but it sure helped.

Executive Director Update
When the state clinic ended with the rules meeting on Saturday it was finally time to take a breath and reflect on the events of the
weekend. 475 coaches in attendance; a record number of vendors; and an excellent lineup of speakers to accompany 5 new inductees into
the Hall of Fame and a wonderful compliment of college coaches. All gathered for the same purpose….to share in the game we love!
I was very pleased with the clinic this year and am proud of the people working behind the scenes to make it all happen. Kudos to Scott
Hughes; Ryan Bunnell; Ken Seitz and his crew; Jeff McKeon; Gary O’Neal; Shawn Lyons; and the Executive Council for all of their hard
work and planning. A fine group of people with a work ethic that gets things done :) Many compliments were given about how Indiana
does a great job with the clinic and how the camaraderie between our coaches is second to none!
Some responses to the fall meeting suggestions:
MaxPreps was at the clinic and they are the statistical arm of the IHSAA. If you want to be recognized as a state leader in a category
you must report through MaxPreps.
In response to increasing attendance at fall meetings we will invoke a new strategy in 2015. District meetings that were previously
held in the fall will now be held at the state clinic on Friday afternoon. Stay tuned for more details.
Courtesy runner was explained in detail by James Robinson at the rules meeting and will go into effect in the spring of 2014.
All committees are chosen from names submitted through the August newsletter. If you want to serve you need to contact Phil
McIntyre each August about your intent.
Staff discount was used this year at the clinic and you can e-mail Brian Abbott with any feedback on this.
We will examine having a suite at Victory Field due to low attendance at the social hour in left field.
We are considering a Saturday morning session for new coaches and bringing in high school coaches from Ohio and / or Texas to
present during our clinic.
This class tourney proposal submitted by Jeremy Richey will have to be surveyed and presented when our proposal year comes
around again in 2015.
The membership drive will be underway from now until April 1. We want our coaches to join to support their association and, more
importantly, become active in the operations of the IHSBCA. Please invite your fellow non-member coaches to come on board and
considering getting to the spring meetings, the state finals, the all-star series, and the state clinic just to name a few activities that are
sponsored by your association.
The IHSBCA would like to welcome Wabash College Head Baseball Coach Cory Stevens to a new position as a college liaison. He will
help facilitate communications between the IHSBCA and all college programs in Indiana. Cory will gather and share ideas to help the
IHSBCA interact with our fellow coaches at the next level. He will also elicit the college coaches’ support for issues that affect our
association; help promote membership; and gather names for our junior showcase for starters. We are excited to have him on board.
Finally, I met with IHSAA Asst. Commissioner Phil Gardner to discuss our recent proposals that were submitted and to dialogue on ways
to allow our coaches more instructional time with their players. Phil is very supportive of our efforts and understands our desires. I
believe we are headed in a positive direction down the road.
Good luck this spring and thank you for being a part of Indiana baseball.
In Baseball,
Brian Abbott
ISHBCA Executive Director
College Programs In Attendance
The IHSBCA would like to thank all of the college programs that were able to attend and set up a table at the State Clinic this year. It is such a great show of support for Indiana High School baseball to see the college coaches from all levels take time from their program to support the relationship they have with the coaches in our organization. Coaches, the IHSBCA would encourage you to take your staff and players and attend a college game this season. It is a great experience for your players and a great way to build relationships and to continue to show our support for the college programs in our state.

STATE CLINIC EXHIBITORS
Jeff McKeon(Plainfield H.S.)-chairman of exhibitors at the recent State Clinic reported that we sold every space we had available.
The displays were excellent and we had a wide variety. We felt those of you who were and who were not in attendance at the
clinic should be aware of those who supported Indiana High School baseball and thank them by using their baseball products.

IHSBCA Teams Up with the American Cancer Society for Strike Out Kancer
Over the past six years the IHSBCA has raised $74,896 for The American Cancer Society’s Coaches Vs. Cancer through Strike out Kancer!! We are hoping to hit $100,000
this year through our efforts!! To meet this goal we will have to have our best year yet raising nearly $25,000!!! I know that we can do it if all of our coaches schedule a game!! Together we can help the American Cancer Society help people get well, stay well, find cures and fight back against this awful disease!
Coaches Vs. Cancer empowers coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Since 1993 the initiative has raised more than $93 million dollars to support The American Cancer Society’s mission to fund ground breaking research, provide up to date cancer information, advocate for public health policies and delivers services to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
Participating in Strike Out Kancer is simple and fun, and teaches players and other students valuable charitable and character building lessons as well. Many faculty, staff and students have been or will be touches by cancer as some point in their lives. Thank to incredible strides in research, cancer prevention and treatment we are closer than ever to conquering this disease.
To help support Strike Out Kancer at your school, The American Cancer Society can provide you with a Coaches Vs. Cancer playbook with information on how to get started, fundraising ideas, sample materials to help with local promotion and a post event reporting form to submit along with all donations. To request the playbook please contact Beth Campbell at 248.663.3476 or by email at [email protected]
The American Cancer Society will also present banners to programs that meet certain fundraising criteria through the schools entire school year efforts. The levels are $2,500 All-Star, $5,000 MVP and $10,000 or more Champion.
