To widen its knowledge of genealogical information for Indiana, the Indiana Historical

Society takes part in an exchange with genealogical and historical societies across the country.

The IHS sends out The Hoosier Genealogist: Connections in return for receiving the publications

of other organizations. A volunteer with the IHS reads through the incoming publications to find

listings of people with Indiana connections. The following genealogical data comes from the

publications of the following organizations in Illinois: the Decatur Genealogical Society, the

Chicago Genealogical Society, the Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society, the

Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois, and the Versailles Area Genealogical and Historical

Society. The names and issues of the periodicals are listed with the data, along with names of

articles, authors where specified, and the years of publication. All data is transcribed exactly as it

appears in the publications except where noted. Where information is needed for clarity, the

authors have inserted it in brackets. All periodical issues listed below are available for further

research in the Serials Section at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis.

Zacharia E., born Nov., 1821 in Brownsville, Ind., raised in Sangamon County. He went overland in 1849 to Oregon, and from there to California and spent several years in mining. He went to Idaho in 1860, and was married Oct., 1873, to Mrs. Harriett Luckett, and resides in Idaho City, Boise county, Idaho.

"Garrett, born March 2, 1823, at Brownsville, Ind., raised in Sangamon county, married in Jacksonville, Ill., to Mrs. Martha Tegarden. They had eight children, and Mrs. Elkin died Oct. 24, 1872. He was married May 1, 1873, to Mrs. Matilda Conner, whose maiden name was Gibbons. They reside in Springfield.

“Biography from 1881 History of Sangamon County, Illinois, page 510” p. 151 William F. Elkin was born April 13, 1872 in Clarke county, Kentucky. In 1811 he moved to Xenia, Ohio, and was there married to Elizabeth Constant. In 1820, the family moved to Brownsville, Indiana, and then to Sangamon county, in 1825. Volume 47, no. 1 (Spring 2011) “Centenarians” p. 19 A Centenarian Dead Alfred Bundy father of Elijah Bundy, the sawmill man of this city, and grandfather of William Bundy of St. Louis avenue, died last Monday at his home in Coatesville, Ind., at the age of 100 years. He was born in Tennessee in 1798 and removed with his parents to Indiana when he was only 9 years old. Mr. Bundy was married three times. His last wife and fourteen children survive him. At the funeral his oldest son Elijah, of this county, aged 64 and his youngest child, a daughter, aged 12, sat side by side. [Decatur Review, November 13, 1898, page 4] Volume 50, no. 1 (Spring 2014) “Well-Known Citizen” p. 7 Mr. Huntington was quite well known in Decatur and was a respected citizen. He was a native of Indiana and was 64 years old. He had been a farmer most of his life. He went to Ottawa, Kansas, and lived on a farm, and returned to Decatur about six years ago. About a week ago, Mr. Huntington fell from a horse and received injuries which it is thought had something to do with his death, together with the fact that he had been working in the sun all day. The deceased is survived by a wife, six children and two stepchildren. The children are Mrs. M. E. Smith and Mrs. Viola Fuller of Madison, Kansas; Mrs. Maggie Creigan of Olpe, Kansas; Mrs. Ora Leavitt, Oklahoma; Mrs. Ella Martin of Monticello; Mrs. Bertie Kerkley of Decatur and D. W. Huntington of Decatur. The stepchildren are Mrs. George Clair of Ottawa, Kansas, and Mrs. Louis Lang of Decatur. The Inquest The inquest was held at the residence this forenoon at 10 o’clock by Deputy Coroner Roy Bendure. William Blenz and Willie Cherry testified as to the death of Mr. Huntington. After hearing the evidence,

the jury returned the verdict that the deceased had come to his death through excessive heat causing heart failure. The jury was composed of Dr. H. D. Heil[?] foreman, J. C. Gates, W. W. Conard, Frank Plomer, G. W. Martin and W. F. Jacobs. From Greenwood Cemetery Records—(copied from Sexton Records) p. 132. Abraham W. Huntington, 7-21-1899, lot 16, block 13, S 1/2. (Usually the burial date). Nancy I. Huntington, 12-6-1901, lot 16, block 13, S 1/2. “Obituary—Elizabeth Edds” p. 8 Mrs. Elizabeth Edds, wife of Carroll Edds, died yesterday morning at half past eleven o’clock of paralysis of the heart at her home, No. 1514 East Eldorado Street. Mrs. Elizabeth Edds was born in Kentucky on November 7, 1819. She was the eldest daughter of the late Nathaniel Adams of this county and a sister of Henry D. and James Adams of this city. When grown, she removed from Kentucky to Sullivan County, Indiana, where on March 27, 1846, she was married to Carroll Edds. The fruit of the union was four children, two of whom are Mrs. J. W. Graves and Mrs. Mary Lanharn, who survive her. In August 1850, the family removed to Decatur and have lived here continuously from that date to this, excepting three years residence in our neighboring county of Moultrie. In early life, the deceased united with the Presbyterian Church, but in1849 she embraced the Christian faith and remained a believer in it until her death. She has been unwell nearly all winter, but her family and friends at no time considered her condition ruinous. About 11:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, she stepped to the kitchen door and told her daughter to hurry with the dinner or she would be late. As she turned back to her chair, she fell and expired without a word or a struggle. The funeral will take place at two o’clock Thursday afternoon from the family residence. Friends are respectfully invited to attend. [Decatur Review, Feb. 25, 1885, p. 3]

“The James Madison BUNTIN, Sr. Family History, Franklin County, Illinois” Submitted by Harley Buntin Neal pp. 50–51 [. . .] In 1839, John William and Jane (BUCHANAN) BUNTIN migrated via New Albany, Indiana to their new settlement area located 5 1/2 miles north of Madisonville in Hopkins County, Kentucky. The location was along Deer and Otter Creeks, near the villages of Shakerag and Hanson. "In 1838,Thomas Alfred BUNTIN left the family at New Albany, Indiana and returned to Norfolk County, Virginia. On 25 December 1846, Jane’s brother William BUCHANAN and wife Mary Ann GENTRY also left Person County, North Carolina with five of their children and arrived at Hopkins County, Kentucky. William’s brother, Arthur BUCHANAN, was in the same migration. "It is believed that Thomas Alfred BUNTIN’s service with General George Rogers CLARK in 1782 from southern Illinois (Fort Massac to Fort Kaskaskia) to Vincennes, Indiana was what spurred the family to later make the migratory quest to Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois. "In 1839 when the William BUNTIN family moved to the Madisonville, Kentucky area, their nine children settled there for a time. They were:

Extracts from The Versailles Area Genealogical and Historical Society Newsletter Volume 26, no. 3 (Fall 2009) “Mark Bowman Uncovers Part of Ripley’s History” p. 51""Taken from: The Democrat Message, June 3, 2009 "Mark Bowman uncovered several pieces of Ripley’s rich pottery history recently. [. . .] The Ripley area at one time was the 2nd largest producer o[f] earthenware in the United States. The crocks, bowls, and butter churn Bowman found match the descriptions given in the History of Brown County, Illinois 1970, right down to the salt glaze. [. . .] The Stout pottery is the only one mentioned inside of Ripley’s city limits, according to the History Book, it burned in 1901 or 02, and the last pottery in the area closed around 1910.

“Society Members Visit Site of the New Ripley Dig” by Mary Logsdon pp. 51–53 Shortly after the previous article appeared in the local newspaper, Society Secretary, Charlotte Scott and Editor, Mary Logsdon made the short trek down the road to Ripley, to view the site of the vast pottery find. [. . .] We ask[ed] Mark about the previous owners of the land and if he had discovered who might have been the potter who lived there, and left behind some of Ripley’s heritage. As it turned out he had been researching land records at the Brown County Courthouse and found the only potter to own his land was William H. Glenn. Mr. Glenn came to Ripley from his native state of Indiana, and gave his occupation as “potter” on the 1860 census, however, by 1870 he had apparently given up the trade and thereafter stated he was a “farmer.” "We also did some research and discovered there were 18 Potters listed in Ripley in 1850, which had increased to 27 by 1860, and 37 by 1870. “Records show that Ripley produced annually enough pottery to equal a quarter of million gallon capacity. Clay was obtained from Longplace, Sketterville, So. of Ripley and on a farm west of the Christian Church. "[. . .] Those giving their occupation as a “Potter” in Ripley in 1850 were: John Ebey, age 45, native of VA., Henry Warnick, 20, Ind, [. . .] William Cleveland, 21, IND., William A. Best, 22, Ind., Jeremiah Hankins, 32, IND. "[. . .] In 1860 Ripley potters were [. . .] William Cleveland, 32, IND., Wm H Glenn., 36, IND. [. . .] I. H. Keith, 36, IND. [. . .] W. W. Hankins, 38, IND. "[. . .] Mckendrae Willes deeded lot 1 & 2, Block 17 in the new addition of Ripley to Wm H. Glenn. This matches the Bowman description. William H. Glenn was born in Johnson County, Indiana April 24, 1824, the son of Henry and Ruth Rhodes Glenn, one of 9 children. His siblings were Fielding T., Robert A., Florence [died age 5 yrs], Amanda Hardin, Elizabeth Ingles Taylor, Sarah Lindsay, Archibald A. and Samuel R. He moved to Vermilion Co, IL. in 1828 with his parents, and to Brown Co. in 1831, where, with the exception of about 2 yrs. spent in McDonough Co., he has been a resident ever since. His father Henry and Thomas F. Glenn were cousins. William’s grandparents were Archibald A.
