How do we, as sisters in Christ, lead
THE CROSS SHAPED LIFE?
We all struggle at times with this.
Sometimes it seems a difficult
challenge. Some of the things that
we need to remember are to
accept the call of Christ
and come after Him.
We must deny ourselves,
take up the cross, and
follow Him!
Keeping these things in mind will
help us lead
THE CROSS SHAPED LIFE.
Want to find out more about these
topics? Then plan to attend the
Treatshop.

PITTSBURGH WOW! What a beautiful city! Pittsburgh is surrounded by water and known as the City of Bridges. From the balcony at the David Lawrence Convention Center, you can see the place where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River … a confluence or flowing together of two or more rivers. Prior to the opening worship service, 40 district presidents brought a container of water from their districts to add to the fountain that was specially made for this convention. This symbolized our districts coming together at the LWML Convention to
form one body as we were “Quenched! by the Water”… living water, leading to eternal life. Our Bible study focused on John 4 where Jesus met the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well at noon the hottest time of day! Jacob’s well was a gathering place for women early in the morning as well as in the evening, the coolest times of day. The Samaritan woman came to draw water at noon. She avoided others who shunned her. She was leading a “hidden life” and Jesus breaks through all of that! He knew her and her sin. He told her everything about her “hidden life.” What was her response? After trying to shift the subject, she tried to focus on Jesus as a prophet. She met and recognized Jesus as her Savior. She left her water jar behind, went back into town
and invited everyone to come and see Jesus – the man who told her everything she ever did. She pointed others to Jesus who has living water! His water satisfies our thirst. It is a wellspring that overflows and engages others as the Gospel message is shared. Like the Samaritan woman, we know our sins. We know our sins have been forgiven by Jesus. We, just like the Samaritan woman, are compelled to go out, with JOY, to share that living, life-saving water, from a well that never runs dry. That living water satisfies our thirst and becomes a spring of water that wells up to eternal life.
Just imagine 3,167 sisters and brothers in Christ worshipping and singing together! WOW! We adopted a mission goal of $1,830,000 A total of $1,345,712.00 is designated for mission grants this biennium. Thirty mission grant proposals were selected for the ballot. Each delegate voted for eight. Seventeen mission grant proposals were fully funded and the 18th mission grant proposal was partially funded. Mission grants that were funded are posted on the lwml.org website.
Over 100 sisters and four brothers in Christ from our district attended the convention. Seventy traveled on our district buses, and others came by car and plane. Ninety-five attended our district caucus and were available for the district photo. We delved into Bible study with Donna Pyle. Our song leader, Dr. Dina Vendetti from Dover, Delaware, was dynamic, innovative and fun as we praised God through uplifting songs. We heard inspirational and motivating speakers as they shared about missions, mites in action and God’s work around the world. We saw the excitement of 68 Young Woman Representatives and our Heart to Heart District Leaders and Heart to Heart Sisters. We saw the banner processional … 40 district banners centered on the theme “Quenched! by the Water.” Take time to go to the lwml.org website and see all the pictures posted of the beautiful banners. We visited exhibits and displays and had a neighborhood block party! We even heard from Mrs. Rogers (Elaine Bickel) as she added humor and insights about those pesky mites and the purple princess as she rushed off to the trolley.
Special offerings collected during convention were: Tee-Up for Mites Golf Outing $ 5,200.00; Pledge Walk for Mites
$69,392.60; Convention Offerings: #1 2013-2015 LWML Mission Goal $49,492.50; #2 Pittsburgh Lutheran Center for Blind-Pittsburgh, Penn-
sylvania and Camp Bethesda-Bethesda Lutheran Communities-Cypress, Texas $27,444.50; #3 LCMS Disaster Response-Hurricane Sandy
Relief $28,838.22; #4 LWML Heart to Heart Sisters Program $To Be Announced. 21,000+ Gifts from the Heart were collected to be distributed
in the Pittsburgh Area.
Lots of new and old friendships, hugs and words of encouragement were shared with sisters in Christ. We are excited about the 36th Biennial LWML Convention in Des Moines, Iowa, June 25-28, 2015. We are planning bus transportation for Des Moines; mark your calendars and join us in Des Moines!
Yes, we are safely “back home in Indiana.” What are we going to do now? We have lots of energy, enthusiasm and excitement to share as we return home “Quenched! by the Water.” We are going to focus on Jesus as we fulfill our LWML goals and targets: Nurturing Faith in Christ by helping every woman to be nurtured in faith and empowered by His Spirit; Making our Mission Meaningful as we challenge and equip women to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who are hurting, helpless and need to know Jesus at home and throughout the world; and Sharing Encouragement by building relationships, supporting, encouraging and welcoming all women to grow in faith and be a part of LWML. Make plans to join us at TREATSHOP, and invite others to come to Our Shepherd in Avon, Indiana, August 17, 2013. Plan to attend our LWML Indiana District Convention at Four Points Sheraton, West Lafayette, Indiana, June 20-24, 2014. The theme is: Sow What! from Mark 4:3. May the Lord bless you and keep you in His care as you are daily “Quenched! by the Water” through His Word … reaching out to share that thirst quenching water with everyone.

I will never forget the summer that a pair
of mourning doves took up residence in
the flower box under my bedroom window.
I had a front row seat to one of God’s little
miracles … a nest of baby birds!
There were three of them …
tiny, blind and helpless!
They were so fragile that I
feared they would not
survive. I watched those
baby birds survive and
thrive! You see, their
parents had prepared a soft
nest of twigs and down to
receive them. Warmth and nourishment
came from above as mama and papa bird
faithfully delivered food and covered their
young ones with their own feathered
bodies. When a sudden hailstorm arose,
I watched in amazement as mama bird
lowered her head, arched her back and
spread her wings over her babies. Her
body formed a protective umbrella; the hail
stones bounced off and the little ones were
safe!!!
You know, the neediness of those little
doves touched a chord in my heart.
Outside, we gals may look strong and
self-sufficient. We may be the ones that
others look to for help! But inside it is a
different story! In the HIDDEN SELF of our
hearts, we are more like helpless
hatchlings. Our spirits are fragile, prone to
hurts and insecurities. We are often pum-
meled by hail stones of guilt, worry and
fear!
Thankfully, the God who loves us
sees that HIDDEN SELF with an eagle
eye view! “Nothing in all creation is
hidden from God’s sight!“ (Hebrews
4:13) In mercy, He sent a Savior
who took our sins upon Himself at
the cross. The Holy Spirit brought us
to faith, and our hearts now rest in
the soft nest of our Father’s grace.
Warmth and nourishment come from
above, as our faithful provider feeds and
strengthens us through Word and
sacrament. And when like hungry birds our
hurting, needy hearts look up and cry out,
our protector draws near!
“He will cover you with His feathers, and
under His wings, you will find refuge!“
(Psalm 91:4)
Our HIDDEN SELF finds rest, peace and
comfort in our Heavenly Father’s care. Our
strength is renewed and we rise up on
wings … not like doves … but as on
EAGLES! (Isaiah 40:31)
Now that is no small miracle!

NO SMALL MIRACLE
HE SUSTAINS THE HIDDEN LIFE!
Chief of sinners though I be …He sustains the hidden
life, Safe with Him from earthly strife. LSB 611, v. 4
I often have the lines “Chief of Sinners though I be,
Jesus shed his blood for me” in my head. I find the
hymn powerful, even spine tingling, whenever I hear it!
Once I posted the lyrics in a newsletter, only to be met
with a volley of comments assuring me that I could not
be the Chief of Sinners. You are a good person, they
assured me. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I am not. I
am the Chief of Sinners. To burst it further, so are you!
All of us have sinful natures! It is such a relief to know
that we can rest assured knowing that we do not have to
earn our trip to heaven; for that would be impossible. By
God's grace we can do good things; however, we do not
have to rely on those good things for our salvation. All
we have to rely on is Jesus!
God sustains the HIDDEN SELF (life) that He began in
Holy Baptism as He made us His own children through
the water and the Word. Drink deeply from the “Living
Water” - Jesus Christ and His forgiving grace, as you
read His Word and eat His body and drink His blood for
the forgiveness of your sins and the strengthening of
your faith! Then we will be safe from “all earthly strife”
until He brings to completion what He began in us.
Chief of sinners?” Yes, it is true! Nevertheless, even
more we are redeemed children of God through faith in
Jesus Christ our only Savior! Thanks be to God! Alleluia!
Amen! Rev Phil Bloch Counselor

mites make over $120,000 worth of mission grants
possible. We are half way through our 2012-2014
Biennium, and we have a few grants yet to
complete. So keep filling up that Mite Box and
sending in your dollars! Below are some pictures
from our current mission grants. You can learn
more about them at lwmlindiana.org.
In less than a year, we will be voting on a new set
of mission grants. Do you know of an Indiana
linked, outreach-based ministry that needs the help
of the mighty LWML Indiana District? Download an
application at www.lwmlindiana, and be sure to
give it to the organization. The application deadline
is January 15, 2014.
Whether you fill your Mite Box daily or you are a
last-minute girl, your mites are important for our
current grants and the ones to come. Continue to
give and to spread the word about our Lord and the
great work He has set forth for us to do.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Do you follow a mites calendar to increase your intentional mites giving?
Do you simply collect your loose change and dump it in your Mite Box as you leave for your
society meeting?
Or, like me, do you seldom have cash and write a check as you arrive, hopefully
overcompensating the amount to atone for the lack of a Mite Box?
YOUR MITES MATTER

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,
as though God were making His appeal
through us. We implore you on Christ’s
behalf: Be reconciled to God.”
(2 Corinthians 5:20)
What is an ambassador? It is a person
who acts in the absence of a person or
group that is not present.
In 2 Corinthians 5:20, we are told that we
are ambassadors for Christ. That is a big
job! We are to act as Christ to those
around us. This verse goes even one step
further than the question so many of us
wore on bracelets
not so long ago:
What Would Jesus
Do?
The next sentence tells us that God makes
his appeal to others through us. Our job as
ambassadors is to reconcile others to God.
Our sin has separated us from God. Jesus,
with his ultimate sacrifice, has reconciled
us to God. We are to act as Christ to
others and bring them to a relationship
with our loving God.
As ambassadors for Christ, we are always
on the job. Everything we do could be
observed. When we rise and go out,
everyone we meet is someone that needs
reconciliation. We are to share God’s
peace and love with everyone we meet.
Be an ambassador for Christ today!

THE HIDDEN SELF
AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST
Lovely, kind, special, enthusiastic,
nurturing … these are some of the positive
words that were used to describe me most
recently by individuals at the spring retreat.
But, no one has described me as I truly
know myself – selfish, competitive, petty,
angry, and sarcastic. These words are not
so pretty and yet they are true at times.
We all have our undesirable traits: we hold
grudges; we seek to be best; we strive for
acclimation; we crave or desire things we
should not. How do we love ourselves
when we know this truth of our HIDDEN
SELVES? Even more so, how can God love
us in such a light? “But God demonstrates
His own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans
5:8) How can this be possible? God knows
the blackness of our hearts, and
yet, he sent Jesus to be our
salvation. This dirty, conniving, evil
race of humans deserved death,
not salvation! God now sees us
through the resurrection of His
Son, and we are bright, shining,
and pure. Praise be to God!
We must let go of the guilt and
pain of our errors in life; we hold onto the
Word of God that provides our salvation
through Jesus Christ. Remember to say
with the psalmist, “My flesh and my heart
may fail, but God is the strength of my
heart and my portion forever … But as for
me, it is good to be near God.” (Psalm 73:
26, 28a) With hearts that are near God,
we can touch many lives in positive ways
through God’s power and work in our lives.
Do not ever try to fix yourself; rely on God
to guide the way. Accept who you are and
seek God’s will for your life. Then follow
that path with trust in God!
How do we deny ourselves, reject our true
selves? The Leader Development session
of the Treatshop THE CROSS SHAPED LIFE
may help us find ways to reject our human
natures in every aspect of our lives and
focus on the life God would
have us live. Please come
and enjoy the fellowship,
open discussions, and
growth with fellow sisters of
Christ at this year’s
Treatshop. Encourage a
friend to attend with you.
I will see you there!

When you think about your HIDDEN
SELF, does your pulse race? We all
have things we do not want revealed
to the world. We hide ourselves for
many different reasons, but
eventually, we have to deal with our HID-
DEN SELVES. No matter what the reason is
for trying to hide ourselves, God sees eve-
rything. He wants us to be true to
ourselves as people and as Christians.
Every day we put on our different "masks"
that hide our HIDDEN SELVES. Nonetheless,
in all these masks we wear, where are our
true selves?
Do we like our HIDDEN SELVES? In order to
mature and grow as Christian people, we
need to investigate our HIDDEN SELVES and
deal with the issues at the heart of the
matter. We also need to realize the truth
that nothing is hidden from God. He sees
all our mistakes in life and still loves us,
protects us, helps us and is there for us.
He knows our deepest, darkest secrets.
He knows our fears, our hopes and our
dreams. He empowers us to be able to
face our challenges. Because of Him, we
can change our HIDDEN SELVES to be more
and more like Christ.
Why do we hide the fact that we are
Christians? When the topic of Christianity
or its ideals come up, what do you do?
A) freeze and not know what to say,
B) carefully plod through the
politically correct words to be as
ambiguous as possible, so that you will
not hurt anyone's feelings,
or
C)be bold and tell it like it
really is or should be?
More often than not, A or
B is my answer; although through the
power of Christ, I answer with C. Just re-
cently a student asked me what Easter
was all about. After I recovered from the
shock that not everyone knew the answer,
I took a deep breath, said a silent prayer
and jumped right in with the Easter story of
Christ's death and resurrection for our
sins. Opportunities like these remind me of
why Christians are here. We need to let
the light shine on our HIDDEN Christian
SELVES. We need to reflect the light of
God.
Let us not be hidden Christians, but visible
Christians and spread the Good News and
Christian values to every corner of the
world. Let us set our sights high and have
Jesus be our mentor. We need to be
committed to our values and convictions.
Sisters in Christ, be brave and bold,
uplifted by God’s
grace and
mercy. Reveal
your HIDDEN
Christian SELF to
the world with
pride and
strength that comes from Jesus Christ our
risen Savior.

INDIANA DISTRICT
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the LWML Indiana District is to assist
each woman of the Indiana District LWML in strengthening
her relationship with the triune God so she is enabled to
use her gifts in mission and service to the people of the
world.
Each of the five active churches in the LWML Hammond
Zone tied at least one of the eight quilts pictured. Last year
zone members collected the patches; Sue Noojin sewed them
together; LWMLers at each church tied them; and Sue Noojin
finished the edges. We plan on doing more again in the
fall. The gentleman in the picture is Al Edon From Dakota Boys
and Girls Ranch in Minot, North Dakota. Every child there is
given a quilt.

The theme of this issue of Good News,
THE HIDDEN SELF, seems to indicate that
something is lost or we are looking for
something. In reality, we are all lost – lost
in original sin. We are all sinners, and the
wages of sin is death. We are looking for a
way out of our sad situation. The theme of
our district retreat, April 26 & 27, 2013, at
the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County
State Park was FIND SHELTER IN
GOD. Our presenter, Donna
Pyle, led us on this search
based on God’s Word,
“Whoever dwells in the shelter
(secret place) of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the
Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1) So we snuggled
up with our sisters and brothers in Christ
using His Word to find the answer.
Studying the
book of Ruth
we found
that we
need a firm
foundation,
a willingness to accept change (within the
bounds of Scripture), how to support
others, seeing ways to give, discernment,
using what God has given us in every
aspect of our lives and putting out the
welcome mat for whoever may need it.
Tangible results of the gathering were
MANY bags of bean and barley soup mix
to share with those in need. The spiritual
result was that we
found out that our
Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ has
taken care of the
problem FOR us.
His death has
brought
us eternal
life and
we can
find rest
and
shelter in
that promise.

FIND SHELTER IN GOD
YOUNG WOMEN FOR CHRIST
As a young woman in the LWML, I have
had the privilege over the last three years
to strengthen myself spiritually. Being a
young woman in the LWML Indiana
District means that I am able to
experience so many breath-taking
experiences that reveal who I am as a
Lutheran woman.
I served as a page at the 2010 and 2012
LWML Indiana District Conventions, and I
was able to use my talents to assist many
LWML leaders in many unique ways. My
experiences can be defined with one of my
favorite Bible verses: “For we are God’s
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to
do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) It
is extremely important for us to use our
creative skills for the purposes that God
wants us to use them.
I also went to the
2012 Indiana Dis-
trict Youth Gather-
ing. That weekend
taught me to be an
imitator of God and
to live a life of love,
just as Christ loved me and gave up his life
to save me from my sins (Ephesians 5:1-
2). This has helped me so much spiritually,
because it is important to lead by God’s
example and to serve others with that
mindset.
All of us young women need to remember
to get involved as much as we can and to
go into any event we do through your
church with the mindset that we WILL gain
something bigger out of it. Trust me: it
really does pay off in the end.

ATTENTION ZONE PRESIDENTS (and other interested individuals)
“What an experience!”
“My faith was strengthened.”
“I felt connected with total strangers.”
“The singing was heavenly!”
Comments like these could come from any LWMLer attending convention but they
came from RUTH ARMEL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS attending their first
convention.
Zone presidents received application/requirement forms for this scholarship at the
board of directors meeting in March. If you have not used any of them yet, NOW IS
THE TIME to be thinking and distributing them to ladies who could benefit from an
LWML convention. The form can also be downloaded from the website
www.lwmlindiana.org.
Be a part of introducing someone to the joys of serving in the LWML as well as
experiencing the energy and dedication members have in serving their Lord.
If you need applications or have questions, contact me. Act now so others can be
planning and anticipating the experience. You will be glad you did – and so will they!
Sue Pflughoeft, Ruth Armel Scholarship Chairman
I have a beautiful rose bush in my flower-
bed. It is special! Why? It has two different
colored blooms on it! In the spring, I
noticed that the leaves in the center of the
bush were much larger than the leaves on
the side branches. I did not think much
about it until it started to bloom. The
blooms in the center are
large, pink, and fragrant. The
blooms on the sides are
small, dark red, and have no
smell. Is this the only rose
bush that blooms in two
different colors? No, but it is
the only one I have, so it is
special to me.
Think about yourself. Do you have one
thing that you do really well, something
that you really like to do, or something that
is different from other people? Guess
what? You are special! If you say you are
not good at anything, that cannot be true.
“Each one of you should use whatever gift
you have received to serve others, as
faithful stewards of God’s grace in its
various forms.”(1 Peter 4:10)
So, how are you using your special gift to
serve your family, your church, your
community? “We love because He first
loved us.” (1 John 4:19) Christian service
is our response to God’s great love for us.
That is our invitation to serve others
…”wherever and whenever He has
need of us.” Do not wait to be asked
to serve. Volunteer! Volunteer
because God gifted you to do
something, and you want to share
those gifts with others … because
YOU ARE SPECIAL!
Join other SPECIAL WOMEN in the
PING session at the LWML Indiana
District Treatshop on August 17. Plan to
bring all the SPECIAL WOMEN in your church
and make a day of it. Find the registration
form (page 10) and details (pages 1 and
7) in this newsletter.
