The momentum moving into a new decade of Indiana racing has a lot of force behind it. During the recent Indiana Standardbred banquet where champions of 2019 were honored, a foreword provided by the Indiana Stan-dardbred Breed Development (ISBD) showcased some of the numbers from last year, and they were nothing but impressive.

It was reported more than 444 Indiana Sired Fair Circuit (ISFC) races were contested over 31 programs across the state with a total of 2,587 starters and more than $1.6 million in purse money awarded. Horsemen and horsewomen will see that number increase in 2020 as the state’s ISFC Championships will vie for $25,000 each at the Indiana State Fair.

Speaking of those championships, a big announcement was made at the awards banquet. The ISFC Championships will now be known as the Governor’s Cup Championships for all eight divisions. Richard Keaton and Mike McDaniel are shown on the cover unveiling the new trophy.

In addition to champions of 2019 being honored during the Indiana Standardbred banquet, four new Hall of Fame members were inducted. Congratulations to Lynn Wilfong, Harold Barnes, Hannelore Hanover and Freaky Feet Pete for being the newest members of the elite group that repre-sent the roots of Indiana racing.

With the retirement of several of the state’s stars such as Hannelore Hanover and Freaky Feet Pete, it’s time to pass the baton onto the next crop of super-stars. The Breeders Crown returns to Indiana this fall, and hopes are to see some strong numbers from the Indiana sired program involved in those races.

Moving to the pari-mutuel ranks, the Indiana Sires Stakes program paid more than $8.8 million in purses compared to $7.8 million in 2018. This year, the Indiana sired programs across the board will see some new formats, additional racing opportunities through late closers and a boost to several established events. As we move further into 2020, it is still unknown how much table games will affect the current purse structures, but it is an exciting forecast to anticipate.

Tobacco became an exotic and expensive luxury in the new United States and Europe in the 1500s. Shipped from the plantation fields of Colonial Virginia and Maryland—who produced little else at the time—it was those state’s most stable economy.

The ship owners and Spanish traders who took tobacco to Europe and England from the Americas helped to drive and support the stability of the New World in those early days, along with another expensive commodity, sugar. From the merchant owners on down to the indentured servants, slaves, planters and sailors, there were literally millions of Americans whose lives revolved around and relied on the tobacco industry.

By the 1800s, the tobacco industry had blossomed into an Americana mainstay. What does any of this have to do with harness racing? Well, plenty in later years. Read on.

The popular belief among historians is that cigars were invented by the Mayans, who wrapped tobacco in palm or plantain leaves to smoke them as early as the 10th Century.

The American Indians introduced Christopher Columbus and his sailors to tobacco leaves and the explorers soon picked up the habit, taking it with them back to Europe, where it became extremely popu-lar in Spain. Jean Nicot, the French ambassador to Portugal, indulged the habit in France and hence, the name “nicotine” was given to the product in his honor. The Spanish began wrapping tobacco in paper instead of leaves and the cigar was born and smoking was seen as a status symbol.

Cuba became one of the first spots where tobacco was grown and Cigars cultivated, and they were original-ly packed in crates and barrels, with those containers sometimes holding 100 or more cigars. Cigar boxes did not arrive on the scene in America until the 1840, when manufacturers began producing smaller, portable con-tainers that held between 20 to 50 cigars. The advent of chromolithography in 1837 gave the industry a boost as it allowed for fancy labels to be produced inexpensively that could be glued before placed in the boxes.

After 1865, when President Lincoln signed legislation stating that all cigars be sold in boxes and packed in bundles of 25, 50, 100 or 250, manufacturers began upping the quality of the boxes with fancy and artistic labels, reflecting either the region, origin or manufactur-er of the cigar.

The cigar box labels of the late 1880s often utilized more than 20 colors which had to be printed one at a time on various types of paper and then embossed. It was a tedious and painstakingly slow process, and more often than not, the label was actually worth more than the contents of the box in terms of the work involved to produce it.

In short, the boxes became very successful marketing campaigns for their products, and were useful once empty, with many homesteaders turning the boxes into guitars and folk violins. Today, cigar boxes are collect-ables that often sell for thousands of dollars. The artwork on them is striking and original and many contain paintings and/or prints of famous racehorses of the day. In order to establish the exact timeline of a label today, cigar box aficionados suggest holding a magnifying glass up to the label. If the image looks to be a painting, it was probably designed in the late 1880s to 1905. If the color appears to be created by thousands of tiny dots, then the label is likely one produced in the 20th Century.

Here are some examples of cigar box labels that featured harness horses:

ALCAZAR~The Alcazar label features the trotter Alcazar, 2:20½, with a stamp of his 3-year-old clocking of 2:23. The son of Sultan, 2:24, was also a brother to Stamboul, a trotter with a mark of 2:07 who sold for

$50,000 in California in 1889. Alcazar was a foal of 1883 who became the property of George C. Steves of Milwaukee, who later stood the stallion at his Uihlein Farm in Truesdell, Wisconsin. Before passing away at the age of 16, Alcazar enjoyed a modest stud career (for a fee of $250), siring, among others: Kebir, 2, 2:28¼; Mista 2, 2:29; Kaffir, 4, 2:29½; Sacramento Girl 2:30; Ardent, 2:30; Princeton 2:29¼; Lady Rosamond 3, 2:27½; and El Molino 4, 2:25. Alcazar sired nine in 2:30 or better.

DAN PATCH~Dan Patch was one of the most frequent Stan-dardbreds to grace cigar boxes. M. W. Seifert painted a wooden cigar box in 1910 featuring the mighty Dan Patch in a box de-signed by the B. Henschel Cigar Manufacturing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1909. Cigar tins were also popular, as

one seven-ounce gold tobacco tin featured Dan Patch in a black ink drawing on a red oval background offered. Another wooden, ink-stamped cigar box from 1926 also featured Dan Patch.

The Harvester~a trotter who set a record in 1925 with Edward “Pop” Geers at the lines, was featured frequently on many cigar boxes. These boxes usually held 50 cigars for a cost of ten to five cents each. Produced in Penn-sylvania, the cigars eventually ceased using the word “The” before the horse’s name and the cigars were simply referred to as “Harvester.” Many of these cigar boxes continued to spotlight the horse well into the 1940s. One cigar box painting was very different

from Cyrus Hall McCormick’s Harvester, which depicted that company’s harvesting machine being pulled by a pair of hors-es. This company had their boxes produced in Indiana.

Peter Manning is another trotter who was famously portrayed on cigar boxes and tins, along with Rarus, who was painted in the style of Currier and Ives and donned with the mon-iker “The King of the American Trotting Turf.”

Single Kay was a chestnut filly whose bright face was on the outside of several Havana boxes, which featured a background of horseshoes set atop

and below trotters battling over dirt. Sin-gle K was a daughter of the famed Single G, out of the Walter Direct mare Juanita K. She took a mark of 2:20.3. She was a decent broodmare, producing, among others, Tru Single G (by Traubbe) p, 2:03 ($24,752).

Dr Strong, a foal of 1884 and son of Athelete-Antici-pation-Clay Pilot was featured on a 100-count cigar box with the word printed on the ink-stamped lid, “A Great Horse, A Great Cigar.” The side-labels have a photo of a tall grey horse reminiscent of Greyhound with the words “Dr Strong” 2:07¼ with the manufacturer listed as S.P. Boyer, Maker, Marysville, Ohio.

Guideless Wonder~a pacer with a record of 2:10, was featured inside a cigar box produced by the George W. Croucher company of Newark, New York in 1899.

One, super colorful cigar box banner featured a

horse in the center entitled “The Winner” and touted the art of producing the labels for cigar box manufactur-ers stating that:

“We will make Half Tone Cut like this sample from any pho-tograph and furnish the first 100 labels, Inside, Outside, Half Tone Cut and any printing you may want on the them for $6.50; 500 complete for $12.50; 1000 complete for $17.00. After the first order we will furnish the same label, 100 Ins,

Outs and printing complete for $2.00; 500 for $7.50; 1,000 for $11.50. Cigar Brands 75 cents per thousands.”

This advertising banner was created by the F.M. Howell & Company, a manufacturing complex located on the banks of the Chemung River in Elmira, NY. Founding in 1883, the company was famous for producing wood and strawboard cigar boxes as well as shoe boxes.

Another cigar label advertisement features the words “Louisville Kentucky” above a pair of trotters perusing the oval. According to the verbiage on the label, the cigar labels cost $15 per 1,000 for the inside of the boxes and $9.50 per 1000 for the outside of the box. The labels were produced by F. Heppenheimer’s Sons, 447 Pearl Street, New York with branch offices at 108 and 110 Randolph Street in Chicago.

The Duquesne Cigar Company of Pittsburg, PA produced a handsome, 100-count wooden cigar box featuring a field of trotters rounding the first turn at a local racetrack. This box

was likely designed in 1910.

Another 20-count cigar box from the early 1900s featured a trotter in the middle of the inside cover, with two bike riders on either side and the words “Go-Go” embossed in the center.

Love cigars or hate ‘em, it is hard to deny that these memen-tos from an earlier time certainly helped to celebrate harness racing’s stars of their era.

How Long Have You Been on the Board?I sat on the ISA board for three years 10-years ago and now I was just elected to start my new term

Biggest Passion on ISA Board:I ran to be the voice of people who think they are getting left behind, that is the people who like myself race the Indiana Sired Fair Circuit and have small stables. We need to be included in all future funding since we have not had an increase in purse money for years at the fairs.

Profession Outside of Racing:I am the Clinical Operations Manager for Radiology of Indiana. I have run mammography centers in central Indiana for the past 16 years.

How did you develop your interest in harness racing?I was adopted and raised by my grandparents. My grandfather had harness horses as a hobby. The addiction was instant! I then spent many years with Jo and Bob Barker who only added fuel to the fire since their love was harness racing as well.

Hobbies:Anything Carson and Carder (two sons) are interested in. You can always find us at a basketball court or sporting event. I love to travel, and I am always planning the next trip. I want my boys to know there is a big world out there. Alaska 2021 is what I am currently planning.

Ideal Vacation Spot:Harbor Island, South Carolina and Disney World/Cruise

Television Show I never miss:Too many to list – I am a reality TV junkie

Favorite Food:Prime Rib

Preferred Restaurant:Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse

Item I always splurge on:Sunglasses

Favorite Musical Group:My musical taste depends on the moment. If you played what was on my phone you could go from a love ballad to pop to country, rap and then rock.

Favorite Memory from racing:Iron Claw winning the Indiana Sires Stakes Championship twice in 2009 for us. My grandparents and Josh Whitelow were there. Rose, Donnie and Charles were watching from home. So glad I took a moment to look around and take in the moment. Not to be forgotten is Skyway Quinton who has blessed us with a wonderful ride (see why I love pacing colts!)

If Money was no object, I wouldBuy more horses and stay home with my kids. I love my job, but I love being a mom to Carson and Carder. Most of the time I am a chauffer, but I enjoy taking my kids to and from school. Those moments are the best. We better add a homeschool tutor to this because we will need to be at those races too.

Favorite Professional Sport:NBA all the way. We are a basketball family

30 Years Ago:The Anderson Board of Parks met to discuss the po-tential site for a pari-mutuel racetrack in Anderson. The site selected was Athletic Park located across the White River from downtown. It was noted the City of Anderson would have to acquire 30 lots on the west side of the property on Milton Avenue to accommodate the expansion needed to build the facility.

25 Years Ago:Hoosier Park opened its first off-track betting facility in Merrillville. It was located in the former restaurant known as Ditkas, which was associated with former Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka.

20 Years Ago:Churchill Downs announced the launch of a new logo for all its racing entities, including Hoosier Park. The logo is officially changed to the green abstract drawing of the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs. All signage is changed to open up the 2000 Standardbred season.

The Harness Racing Youth League, a combined effort by the Harness Horse Youth Foundation and Hoosier Park, is the recipient of the US Harness Writer’s Associ-ation (USHWA) President’s Award. Also, Hoosier Park’s leading driver in 1999 Eric Ledford received the USH-WA Riding Star of the Year Award.

Don Irvine Jr. earned his 5,000th career win behind Great Sahbra at Hoosier Park.

Wanted Man became the oldest Standardbred to ever win a race at Hoosier Park. At the age of 14, the Cam Fella gelding, driven by Kevin Holcomb and trained by Jole Holcomb and owned by Circle H Farm, won in 1:58.0. It was his fastest win of the year in his final season of racing.

Scooter’s Mark and Ricky Macomber Jr. won the $10,800 Open Indiana Sired Pace, just a nose ahead of Brooklets Hotshot and Walter Haynes Jr. in 1:53.2. Huggable Henry and Don Eash finished third.

15 Years Ago:Devil’s Music and Jay Cross set a new world record for a 15/16th mile race at Hoosier Park. The Park Place five-year-old, trained by David Bodenmiller and owned by Kathy Estes, stopped the timer in 1:45.0.

Our Alibi, driven by Doug Rideout for trainer-owner William Webb, swept all three legs of the Miss Windfall Final for sophomore pacing fillies and established a new stakes record for the event in a time of 1:56.0.

10 Years Ago:Homicide Hunter, driven by John DeLong for trainer Curt Grummel, won the first of 16 straight races during his three-year-old campaign. The son of Mr Cantab won the first round of Indiana Sires Stakes in a time of 1:56.2.

Four inducted into Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame

By Tammy Knox

Each year during the annual Indiana Standardbred banquet, the Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame committee presents the inductees for the previous year. This year, two individuals and two equine standouts were inducted into the prestigious group, including Lynn Wilfong, Harold Barnes (Posthumously), Hannelore Hanover and Freaky Feet Pete.

Rick Moore, president of the Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame, kicked off the portion of the program dedicated to honor these inductees. Moore introduced Hannelore Hanover, noting her six-year career made her one of the most accomplished trotting mares in harness racing history. The Swan for All mare retired in late 2019 with more than $3 million in career earnings and a career best time of 1:49.2. She garnered numerous major titles during her career, including 2016 Breeders Crown Champion Mare Trot, 2017 Breeders Crown Champion Open Trot, 2016 Dan Patch Trotting Mare of the Year

and O’Brien Older Trotting Mare of the Year, 2017 Dan Patch Trotter of the Year and 2017 Dan Patch Horse of the Year and 2017 O’Brien Horse of the Year, and 2017 O’Brien Older Trotting Mare of the Year. She was a world champion in every sense of the word.

Hannelore Hanover began her racing career at two at the home base of Ron Burke at The Meadows. She shipped to Hoosier Park to join his Indiana string under the direction of Jamie Macomber and won her first start, a division of the Indiana Sires Stakes elimination with driver Ricky Macomber Jr. However, she made a break in the final, which would be her final start of her fresh-man campaign.

After a qualifier at The Meadows, Hannelore Hanover immediately joined the Indiana operation and blos-somed as a three-year-old. She won eight of 19 starts that season and polished off the year with a seven-race

win streak. The rest is history. Her best year was recorded at four when she won 17 of 20 races and earned her first of two back to back $1 million years. Her career best time was taken at The Red Mile at the age of five. Even as her career began to wind down last season, she still won four races and in excess of $234,000 for her owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Frank Bal-dachino and J & T Silva Stable LLC. She has now reverted back to her beginnings at Hanover Shoe Farms where she will become a broodmare.

Baldachino was on hand to accept the award from Hall of Fame members Jessica Barnes and Moore. With a little pride and a few tears, Baldachino addressed the crowd on what the champion mare had meant to her connections.

“Thank you to Indiana Standardbred Hall of Fame,” said Baldachino. “Also, a special thank you to Jamie (Macomber). She laid the foundation for her at

two and three for her career. A special thanks to lots of caretakers over the years. I hope every-body is lucky enough to get a horse like this.”

Barbara Wilfong then took the stage to intro-duce Freaky Feet Pete, a horse that needs no introduction in the state of Indiana. Wilfong went over his many accomplishments and noted he set a track record as a two-year-old in 1:50.3, a record that still stands today. She also noted he beat Wiggle it Jiggleit in the Super Final at three and in the Breeders Crown final.

“He (Freaky Feet Pete) battled through injuries as a Free for All Pacer but was still known as one of the big three, joining Always B Miki and Wiggle It Jiggleit as nationally known horses from Indiana,” said Wilfong. “People would line up to watch him race. He is the pride of the Indiana breeding program.”

Under the direction of Trainer Larry Rheinheimer for most of his career, Freaky Feet Pete was a winner in nine of 10 starts as a two-year-old and returned to win 15 of 17 races at three, including the Breeders Crown at Woodbine. His career best time of 1:47.1 was taken at Pocono Downs at four in an elimination of the Ben Franklin. In all, he won 37 races in 76 career starts with earnings in excess of $1.6 million. He also retired at the end of 2019 and as Wilfong mentioned, he struggled with injuries toward the end of his racing career, Freaky Feet Pete still won four races and earned a win in 1:49.4 at Harrah’s Hoosier Park, still showing he was as tough as ever. Freaky Feet Pete has been retired and is current-ly standing his first season as part of the stallion lineup at Ivy Lane Farm in northern Indiana.

Longtime owners Mary Jo and Marty Rheinheimer accepted the award from Barnes. Marty provided some words to the capacity crowd about their standout, Freaky Feet Pete.

“Thank you to all,” said Marty. “This is more than just our horse; this is everyone’s horse. We are so appre-ciative of all the support and there is one guy not here (referring to Larry Rheinheimer). I’m sure he is smiling down on us.”

The Hall of Fame ceremony then moved to the two out-standing individuals for the class of 2019. Jack Kieninger presented the information on Lynn Wilfong, the first inductee, and noted his contributions to Indiana racing is extensive.

“Lynn was only 12 years old when his father (George Wilfong) entrusted him with three horses for the sum-mer,” said Kieninger. “That was the beginning and Lynn went on to serve as president for 12 years of the In-diana Trotting and Pacing Horse Association (ITPHA), which was the precursor to the ISA (Indiana Standard-bred Association). Lynn helped lobby for pari-mutuel racing and for just about anything else to help the racing industry in this state.”

Wilfong is noted in many areas of the Indiana racing program, from owner-trainer-driver to breeder. To date, he has bred more than 900 horses, including world champion double gaited mare No Gimmicks, Speed N The Tunnel, winner of more than $600,000, Indiana Sires Stakes champions Say Your ABC’s and It’s Time For Fun, and also the breeder on the 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Foxy Maneuver, the Don Eash-trained stand-out with multiple Indiana Sires Stakes championships and earnings in excess of $878,000.

In addition to his work with the state’s organizations, Wilfong was the first assistant to the director of racing at the Indiana State Fair and was inducted into the In-diana Horse Racing Association Hall of Fame in 2018. He has been the announcer for the races at the Newton County Fair, which celebrated 100 years this past year. Wilfong has been the announcer for more than 50 of those years.

Kieninger made the presenta-tion to Wilfong and his wife, Barbara, who he has been married to for more than 60 years and has been by his side in racing the entire time.

“I was very surprised to learn about this award, and I’m glad the Hall of Fame did this while I can still enjoy it,” said Wilfong. “I wouldn’t be here without my wife, Barb. We requested from our children and grandchildren to help us in the barn and Brett, Jennifer, Grant, Kyle, Billy, and Blake

all helped out. When I look at the USTA’s numbers, we are gaining more bets and handles from the previous year. That’s partly because of good management and that is a goal to be involved with a successful operation and there is more to come.”

The final induction process was done posthumously for Harold Barnes, who passed away in late 2019. Jessica

Barnes, his daughter in law, provided a very touching trib-ute and overview of Barnes’ involvement in racing.

“Harold devoted his life to this industry and laid the groundwork in Indiana for the future of the sport,” said Jessica. “He was leading driver and trainer at Louis-ville Downs and had nu-merous ITPHA titles. There were two things about Har-old. He was a true horseman and family was very import-ant to him. He was married to Kay for over 59 years and

he was very dedicated to his four kids, Beverly, Brian, Bob and Brenda.”

Harold was a third-generation horseman who raced from coast to coast, but he always kept his operation based in Indiana. He won his first start as a driver at the Shelby County Fair in 1958 and continued driving until 1998. Although records were not very thorough prior to 1977, he won 777 career races and more than $1 million in purses. It was his training career that blossomed in the latter part of his career. From 1991 to 2011, he won 419 races and more than $2 million in purses. He was also the top trainer at Hoosier Park in 1996.

Harold had many top horses and won some of the indus-try’s top races, including the Kentucky Pacing Derby. His career carried him to California, New York and points in between. When Indiana approved pari-mutuel racing, it allowed him to stay home for the first time in

his career. He had success with both trotters and pacers, including Master Miles, My Chief, Bombe Souffle, Mag-ical Maiden, Air Miles, Glick Plick, Simply Adorable, Lifes Tricks, Indian Kimosabe, Go Nan Go, Electric Miles and Just Another Miles, just to name a few.

A graduate of Shelbyville High School, Harold was a member of the Westport Masonic Lodge. He was a 2016 inductee into the Indiana Horse Racing Association Hall of Fame.

The entire Barnes family came up to accept the award for Harold. Bob addressed the crowd with a thank you on behalf of the family.

“My Dad loved the horses and racing,” noted Bob, who is a veterinarian in New Palestine, Ind. “I remember as a kid he ran up and down the road all the time, but he loved every minute of it. We thank you for this honor for him.”

The Indiana Standardbred community came together for a special night of celebration Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis. “A Night of Champions” was hosted by Kevin Mack with the awards ceremony beginning after a cocktail recep-tion and dinner. ISA Chaplain Claudean Webb led the room in prayer prior to dinner.

Mack led the room in a moment of silence to remember and honor those who were lost during the past year. Joe Putnam, Indiana Standardbred Association (ISA) president, addressed the crowd to kick off the evening, looking ahead to 2020. He noted the barn area at Harrah’s Hoosier Park will open March 7 and the move in date for horses has been set for Monday, March 9 with the first set of qualifiers scheduled for Saturday, March 14. The season is set for Friday, March 27 – Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020.

“We are getting three extra weeks of racing, one at the front and two in November,” noted Putnam. “We are working towards a longer racing season which is in the best interest to keep everyone at home. I had the privilege of being in attendance for the kickoff of table games. The crowds and excitement were something I hadn’t seen before like that in the casino. On behalf of the ISA, I’d like to thank Trent McIntosh, Rick Moore and Harrah’s Hoosier Park team members for a job well done.”

Putnam also noted the return of the Breeders Crown in October.

“This is the Super Bowl of harness racing,” added Put-nam. “Last time, Indiana horses, trainers, grooms, own-ers and the track shined. I can’t wait to see that again.”

“A Night of Champions” got underway with two ISA Special Recognition awards to Senator Mark Messmer and State Representative Terri Austin. Mike McDan-iel, now in his 11th year as the longtime lobbyist for the Indiana Standardbred industry, did the introduction for Senator Messmer, noting his work and importance of being involved in the 2018 comprehensive gaming bill.

“Horse racing is a $1 billion dollar industry in the state of Indiana and it’s getting bigger all the time,” noted

Senator Mark Messmer was presented with the ISA Special Recognition award for his work on the 2018 gaming bill by Mike McDaniel, lobbyist, and Joe Putnam, ISA President.

McDaniel. “Senator Messmer had lots of meeting to ensure the comprehensive gaming bill was balanced and it was a tedious process. Finding a balance is difficult but essential. His openness, patience and willingness to work with all sides will allow us to stay competitive with neighboring states and allow for more growth.”

Senator Messmer, who represents the 48th district in the Jasper, Ind. area, was in attendance to accept the award.

“It is important to make sure the bill would not hurt your industry,” noted Messmer. “We know how import-ant horse racing is to our economy, and all sectors of gaming needed to have structure as the business model was out of date. We were able to get the gaming bill in a really good spot. Thank you for this recognition.”

Also joining Senator Messmer as a 2019 ISA Special Recognition recipient was State Representative Austin, who has served the Madison County area since 2002. Austin serves as the assistant majority leader and is known for always being successful as a good listener and striving to find the facts. McDaniel noted she dives into the specifics and ultimately asks “is it good for Indiana.” McDaniel noted she is the “best of the best” and has been a big supporter of Indiana’s racing industry for a long time.

“It is an honor and I’m really pleased to join Senator Messmer for this award,” noted Austin. “He was the champion of the gaming bill last year. I look back to Dwayne and Imy Rhule several years ago. We sat on their deck and talked about the racing industry and they educated me on the importance it has on the state. I hope all of you have a personal relationship with your legislators to help them understand your industry and the economic benefits to their regions. And, to have Mike (McDaniel) representing you is outstanding. He is very well respected in the state house.”

McDaniel noted several other legislators and former legislators that were in attendance during the banquet, including Bob Cherry, who is a former ISA Special Recognition recipient. Nat Hill IV was also recognized

for his work at the state house “almost every day” and noted the remarkable amount of time he gave during the session.

Hill was one of three ISA Directors honored with the ISA Director Recognition Award. Hill was joined by Ross Leonard and Alvin Miller for the honor. All three directors left the board after their terms were completed in 2019.

Mike McDaniel, lobbyist for Indiana Standardbred racing, and ISA President Joe Putnam presented the ISA Special Recognition Award to State Representative Terri Austin.

Newly elected ISA Directors Sarah Conrad and her son, Carder, and Emily Dever presented the ISA Director Recognition Award for outgoing directors Ross Leonard, Nat Hill IV and Alvin Miller.

The ISA Youth of the Year award was presented by ISA Director Doug Rideout to Vanessa Miller and Matt Gra-ber. Miller is a 16-year-old from Syracuse, Ind. and Mack noted she works with the foals at the family farm from the time they are born until they go to the sale. Graber, a 17-year-old from Graber, Ind., is also very involved with his family’s breeding business and attends all the sales each year and as Mack noted “loves the horses.” Both Miller and Graber received jackets.

ISA Youth Scholarship winners were announced and rec-ognized. Several were in attendance for the honor. Those receiving scholarships for the year include Aleah Barrett, Alexa Barrett, Hunter Bates, Parker Bates, Anna Boyer, Cameron Dyer, Parker Dyer, Jackson Miller, Lexi Miller, Jakob Morgan, Rachel Morgan and Allicia Wilfong.

The top pari-mutuel driver of the year was Trace Tetrick, who won 328 races at Harrah’s Hoosier Park. He was

Swandre the Giant is now an older brother. His dam, Adagio, had a healthy baby boy Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020. The colt was born with a brown tone to his coat and a white star.

The new foal, who was born at the Ruddick Stables in Scipio, Ind. at 2:30 in the morning, is a full brother to standout Indiana trotter Swandre the Giant. Later in the day after the new Swan for All colt was born, Swandre the Giant was being honored at the annual Indiana Stan-dardbred Banquet in downtown Indianapolis at the Indi-ana Roof Ballroom. Swandre the Giant took home honors as the state’s top three-year-old trotting colt for 2019.

The newest member of the Adagio broodmare family is the fourth foal from the Valley Victor mare, who took a mark of 1:57 during her racing career and earned in excess of $216,000. She is owned by Rudy Hershberger

of Ohio and is under a current lease by Stacey Ruddick through 2021.

Besides Swandre the Giant, Adagio has produced two fillies by Donato Hanover, one of which is a broodmare herself. Adagio’s daughter, Donagio, has a two-year-old filly in training in 2020 by Cornaro Dasolo, who stands in Canada.

Swandre the Giant is by far the star of the family. The dark brown horse by Swan for All now has 15 wins in 28 career starts and is among the fleet of horses trained by Ron Burke. Now four, his career best time of 1:51.3 was taken last year at The Meadowlands and he has career earnings in excess of $655,000, $400,000 of which was earned at three. His new brother will be a hot commodi-ty at the yearling sales in the fall of 2021.

The foal out of Adagio was the second one born in 2020 for the Ruddick Stables. Their first of the year arrived Jan. 18 and was a black filly by Swan for All out of the mare Just a Valley Gal. The filly is the seventh foal from the Valley Victor mare and the first Indiana sired foal of the group. The Ruddick Stable will continue to be very busy this spring during foaling season.

Osborne mare inducted into Michigan Hall of Fame

By Ellen Taylor

Fancy Arbor, a foal of 1976 with a mark of 1:59.4 taken as a three-year-old at Detroit Racecourse, was recent-ly inducted into the Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame. The Arbor Pride – Fancy Dream filly was purchased as a yearling in 1977 by C.J. Osborn, 1993 inductee into the Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame. Mr. Osborn was a Midwestern icon when it came to developing young horses in the 1970s.

A success at two and three, Fancy Arbor set multiple fair track records, a few of which still stand. She also won the Matron Stake division, the first Grand Circuit victory for the late Mr. Osborn, as both a freshman and sophomore trotting filly and various Michigan futurities. In her 78 career starts, she was victorious in 42 of them with 13 seconds and seven thirds. In all, she earned $167,931 during a time when purse money was not as high as it is today.

“I was 17 years old when we sold her to the Italians,” remembers Julie (Osborn) Rideout, C.J.’s daughter. “The memories are still so vivid – my first time on an airplane, fly-ing to New York and meeting in a

hotel room to count the cash, and my dad asking me to put it all in my backpack to carry home.”

Records indicate that Fancy Arbor did not race again after her exportation. She produced eight foals, four of which took records overseas.

The Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame was part of the annual Awards Banquet held Saturday, Jan. 25 at Cleary University in Howell, Mich. Julie and her family were on hand to accept the award for the induction of Fancy Arbor. The first class of the Hall of Fame was inducted in 2004 to honor Michigan-based individuals and horses who excelled during their careers.

Now Famous serving as therapeutic horseBy Tammy Knox

There are some people that are multi-talented in anything they tackle, whether it be business, sports or life in general. Some horses are the same way and one of those multi-talented horses is Now Famous. Now part of the fleet of horses that serve children with disabilities at Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding Inc. in Zionsville, Ind., the once veteran racehorse is serving an important role in life after racing.

“One of the horses we use in our sessions is a former racehorse that

we call ‘Famous’ and he is wonderful with the kids,” said Brad Schleppi, executive director of Morning Dove. “He is the only former racehorse we have in our barn, but he fits in well with our program. He joined us in 2018.”

Former owners Rachel and Ross Leonard suspected a job with children would fit into Now Famous’ wheel-house. She immediately bonded with the horse that came into their barn and raced for approximately six years before being claimed.

“He (Now Famous) was one of our favorite horses,” said Rachel. “He was claimed from us and went to the Amish shortly after that. When we found out, I drove to Berne, Ind. and found him and brought him back. We broke him to ride and used him lightly as a show horse.

He was a horse that anyone could ride. He is all class.”

During his racing career, Now Famous scored 24 wins in 206 career starts. His quickest mile was recorded in 1:51.4 as a three-year-old in his native Canada at Wood-bine. The Northern Luck gelding earned more than $300,000 during his career and raced at both Harrah’s

Hoosier Park and then Indiana Downs. His last race was recorded in 2014 at Northfield Park before finding his way back to the Leonard farm just south of Harrah’s Hoosier Park.

Rachel did take Now Famous to a few shows, but with horses like Pro-filer Mindale already filling that bill for her, she really didn’t have a use for him for riding. Therefore, she began seeking another spot for him.

“Since I seem to acquire a lot of retirees, he (Now Famous) wasn’t being ridden much anymore,” explained Rachel. “He is too nice of a horse to stand around in the field. I researched therapeutic riding cen-ters and decided to email Morning Dove. They liked his application and came to the farm to ride him and accepted him on a trial basis.”

However, when it came time for “Famous” to ship out to his new home, Rachel just couldn’t part with the horse that meant so much to her. Therefore, she canceled his relocation to Morning Dove. About six months passed by and Rachel reached back out to Morning Dove and they were still willing to take him. It was an emotional drive for Rachel and “Famous” as they pulled into the Morning Dove property.

“Famous excels at everything we have ever asked of him, and I knew he would be good at this too,” added Rachel. “He is an exceptional horse that exemplifies our wonderful breed.”

Morning Dove’s season begins in March and goes through November each year. Sessions for children and some adults are held daily during that time period so he

adjusted into his routine rather well and rather quickly. On his down time, he enjoys pasture time with his stablemates, but his real calling is interacting with the kids.

Morning Dove currently has 12 horses in their barn utilized for sessions, ranging from Welch ponies up to full size horses such as “Fa-mous.” Children of all ages, from five on up to 65 years, begin their sessions in the shedrow in front of the horses and graduate to the outdoor arena for actual interaction

with the horse. Wheelchair ramps are available in both

AROUND the Track

Harrah’s Hoosier Park remodeling track kitchenBy Tara Ellen Taylor

Harrah’s Hoosier Park is once again adding a nice upgrade to the backstretch area. Scheduled for com-pletion just in time for the opening of the 27th season of Standardbred racing, an extensive remodel with many upgrades to the track kitchen is now underway.

Dining room updates in-clude a fresh coat of paint, new Centiva vinyl wood-like plank flooring, new wood-wrapped columns, a new betting mutuel desk, and a new counter and countertops at the ordering window.

The kitchen galley will feature new flooring, fresh paint, and equipment upgrades.

The old public restrooms were virtually gutted and will feature all-new toilets, sinks, counters, mirrors, tiled showers and show-erheads, stall partitions, epoxy flooring, and trash cans. In addition, there

will be new lockers and benches provided.

General Manager Rick Moore expressed excitement about the project. “Harrah’s Hoosier Park is delighted

to be remodeling the Track Kitchen in time for the opening of the 2020 Race Meet. The Track Kitchen is a focal part of the barn area and our horsemen will now find it even more comfortable and relaxing in an updat-ed setting with better amenities. We look forward to the beginning of another race season and the unveiling of our completely renovated Track Kitchen.”

The new remodel of the track kitchen is fresh on the heels of a new roof for the structure that was added at the beginning of the 2019 racing season.

The bathrooms adjacent to the Track Kitchen have been totally gutted for the renovation project. New flooring, lockers, benches and trash cans will be just part of the additions to the improved facility. Photo by Ellen Taylor

the indoor and outdoor facility taking away any limita-tions for the kids to climb aboard for a ride.

The need for more horses, more sessions and more space are always an issue at Morning Dove. There is a waiting list for individuals to get involved with therapeu-tic riding, and the facility, which is now celebrating it’s 22nd year of business, matches up individuals with horses by their immediate needs and capabilities due to their disabilities.

“Our Mission is to improve the lives of individuals with physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral challeng-es,” added Schleppi. “Although most of our visitors are from the greater Indianapolis area, we do have children come to us from other parts of the state.”

The goals of therapeutic riding have all types of benefits for the children and their parents and guardians. Morn-ing Dove serves approximately 120 individuals per week, with most attending once per week for a session. Cer-tified PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) Instructors provide individual attention during the session joining two other individuals during the ride, one to lead the horse and one to walk along side for added safety. Volunteers are always needed for general help at the facility.

Horses from Morning Dove are generally retired at 20 years of age. With Famous now 17 years old, he has a few more years of serving the children at Morning Dove.

“He (Famous) is at Morning Dove on a lease,” added Rachel. “When it is time for him to retire from his cur-rent job, he will have a home with us forever.”

A look at the 2019 Pacing and Trotting Horses of the Year in Indiana.

Pacer of the Year:Odds on Osiris – What a year it was for the two-year-old pacing colt Odds on Osiris. The son of Rockin Image captured seven wins in 10 starts, including the prestigious Fox Stake during the Indiana State Fair. Campaigned by Melanie Wrenn and driven by Peter Wrenn, Odds on Osiris earned more than $343,000 in earnings and his quickest mile at Harrah’s Hoosier Park in 1:50.3 equaled the track record for freshman pacing colts set by Freaky Feet Pete in 2015. Bred by Merlie Schwartz of Peru, Ind., Odds on Osiris was purchased from the Hoosier Classic Yearling Sale under the name Swiss Rocket and brought $60,000 through the sales ring. A wise investment by Odds on Racing of Florida.

Aged Pacer of the Year:Glorious Nite – Already back on the track in 2020, Glorious Nite was more than just a winner at Harrah’s Hoosier Park in 2019. In addition to being named Aged Pacer of the year, the Always a Virgin mare marked the final start for longtime trainer Charlie Morgan, who retired in 2019. Glorious Nite also completed her four-year-old campaign on a three-race win streak, including the $25,000 Peony Late Closer Final. Owned by breed-ers Phyllis Grozich and Paula Jeanne Kind, Glorious Nite earned nine wins in 20 starts and nearly $75,000 for the year with a career best time of 1:50.2 taken in the

process. She was sold at the end of the racing season and is now competing at Dover Downs.

Trotter of the Year:Grand Swan – Grand Swan burst onto the scene at three with authority, winning her first five races of the year for trainer-driver LeWayne Miller. The Swan for All trotting filly eventually won 10 of 15 starts and even stepped out of Indiana competition to win the Circle City Stakes at Harrah’s Hoosier Park. Her dam, Queen Mum, was purchased by owner Joe Yoder of Howe, Ind. and was bred by Larry E. Miller Jr., who was named 2019 Small Breeder of the Year in Indiana. Grand Swan is now owned by Grand Swan Racing, Go Fast Stable and Never 2 Late Stable and has now earned nearly $600,000 in two years of racing. Her quickest time of 1:53.1 was taken at Harrah’s Hoosier Park during one of her many Indiana Sires Stakes wins this past year.

Aged Trotter of the Year:Bridge to Jesse’s – An oldie but goodie, Bridge to Jesse’s just keeps going and going. The six-year-old son of Jailhouse Jesse is a former Indiana divisional champ, but his success has continued, earning him another title as the year’s top Aged Trotter of Indiana. Owned by Wil-liam C., William P. and Ray DeLong along with trainer Roger Welch, the gelding won seven races this season to bring his career tally up to 42 wins in 91 starts and he’s

Stella, the potbellied pig that resides in the Mike Hol-lenback/Lexi Sarkine barn at the Miami County Fairgrounds in Converse, got a little unexpected publicity in early 2020. Her status has officially changed to “viral” in the social media world.

Sarkine spotted her black cat, Lou, sleeping on top of Stella and when Stel-la got up to walk down the shedrow, Lou never offered to move. He went along for the ride.

The video posted by Sarkine on Twitter received in excess of 151,000 “likes,” more than 36,000 “retweets” and more than 1.7 million views. The post also generated 592 comments, some of which were media out-lets wishing to share the video on their news programs.

Rob Marciano, weatherman for Good Morning America, opened up his weather segment in the eight o’clock hour

of America’s number one morning show Wednesday, Jan. 8 with the video of Stel-la and Lou. The video credited Sarkine of Converse, Ind. in the upper left-hand corner while it aired on the show.

Sarkine was recently featured in the October 2019 issue of the ISA Magazine for her passion of horses and the sport of Standardbred racing. Included in the story was information on how Stella arrived at the Hollenback/Sarkine barn as one of three piglets purchased at the Strawtown sale by Zach and

Dessa Miller. Stella immediately bonded with Sarkine’s horse, Nigel Tufnel, and the two now are inseparable in their barn.

Cart-Dashians continued from pg. 54

inching closer to becoming the state’s newest millionaire with $940,000 on his card. Bridge to Jesse’s also earned a career best time this past year in 1:51.1 at Harrah’s Hoosier Park. He now has five consecutive years of earn-ing six figures each season and a minimum of seven wins

each year. He was purchased by his current connections as a yearling for $28,000 from the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale and is only second to Buck I St Pat as the richest foal by Jailhouse Jesse.
