INTRODUCTION

• The Indian automotive safety standards have been criticized as being insufficient

and ineffective

• India is world's sixth-largest carmarket

• India the only country among the global top ten car markets without a testing

program thatmeasures the safety of vehicles

• However, harmonizing India's vehicle safety standards with global standards is

expected to help automakers export locally produced cars globally

• Criticalsafetyfeaturessuchas Airbags, ABS,and seatbeltreminders tobecomestandardincarssoldinIndia

• Offset frontcrash,sideandrearimpact testswillberequiredby2017

• Carswillgraduallyhavetomeetmorestringentnormssuchas pedestrianprotection,whiplashinjuryandchild

restraintsystems standardsandrequirements

• ItisestimatedthatvehiclesinIndiawillcost8–15%moreresultingfromcompliancewiththesenorms
