FESTIVALSOF INDIA
Being a multicultural country, festivals form an integral part of every Indian. Each
and every festival is celebrated uniquely in different ways according to the rituals,
beliefs and its significant history behind. We have festivals celebrating harvest
seasons, Gods and Goddesses, phases of moon etc. The reason for
celebrations may be the same but the festivities differ according to the region; a
harvest festival celebrating the arrival of spring in India is called Makar Sankranti
in the Northern part of the country, Pongal & Onam in the South and Bihu in
Assam. Holi, Diwali, Dussehra, Rath Yatra, Rakshabandhan, Onam, Guru Purab,
Christmas and Eid are some of the popular festivals celebrated in India.
Durga Puja / Navratri is the festival celebrating Goddess Durga’s homecoming.
While in Gujarat, it is celebrated with Dandiya and Garba dance, in the eastern
part of the country it is celebrated in worshipping the goddess in big pandals
while down south it is celebrated with the decoration of the “Kolu” which is a
staircase of 9 stairs and each stair is decorated with beautiful dolls, and idols of
Gods and Goddesses.
Diwali is a festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Indians across the world.
The festival celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and
light over darkness. Sikhs too celebrate Diwali as “Bandi Chhorh Divas” which is
the celebration of the sixth Nanak's return from detention.
Holi, a festival of colours is celebrated in a unique manner in Mathura and
Vrindavan and is known as “Brij ki Holi”. Here, the menfolk come to play Holi with
the girls’ hope of raising their flag over Shri Radhikaji's temple. But, instead of
colours they are greeted with sticks by the girls. Hence, Holi get its new name
here. The men come fully padded as they are aware of what awaits them and
also the fact that they are not allowed to retaliate on that day. The next day, it is
the turn of the men, who reciprocate by drenching the womenfolk in colours.
There are other interesting festivals like the Kumbh Mela, Alleppey-Boat Race,
Pushkar-Camel Fair and the Goa Carnival which adds to the diversity of the
country and attract a lot of tourists always.

Yoga has become the fitness buzzword these days the world
over. Having originated in India, some 5000 years ago, the
Sanskrit word yoga has several translations and can be
interpreted in many ways but essentially, it is defined as a
method of discipline. Most of us know Yoga as Pranayam and
few Asanas but there is a lot more to it. Even before the Beatles
came to Rishikesh on pilgrimage, India was already popular as
a travel destination, with American tourists seeking spiritual
guidance. However, in recent years, there has been a distinct
boom in wellness travel to India. Madonna, Steve Jobs, Oprah
and Julia Roberts are just a few of the many westerners who
have visited India to visit spiritual and meditation retreats. With
an increasing number of people embracing healthier lifestyles
at home and now integrating them into their travel and holiday
choices as well, South East Asia is fast growing into a sought
after wellness travel destination. Yoga and meditation spa
experiences, fitness, stress reduction and holistic living are
among the experiences sought by wellness travelers.
"Yoga has a complete message for humanity”
"It has a message for the human body”
"It has a message for the human mind”
"And it has also a message for the human soul”

distances and across challenging and varied terrain (flat or undulating, usually
the latter) such as sand, tarmac, dirt tracks, mud, grass and mountain trails.

through South and West India are hosted by loads of travel agencies as they
are the most sought after.

Manali to Leh is one route, which is a favourite of almost all road trip
enthusiasts, and cyclists are no exception. It involves days of excruciating,
but visually treating cycling on Leh-Manali Highway. On this tour, you cross
four high mountain passes, expansive plains, a series of hairpin bends and
various streams.
The north-eastern states of India have some of the most magnificent and
awe-inspiring landscapes in the country. Meghalaya is one such state and
attracts hordes of tourists every year. Shillong is the state capital and the
place, where the Meghalaya Cycling Tour starts and ends. While riding,
explore lush groves and get drenched in the tranquil environment of
Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth.
Rajasthan is often referred to by the prefix royal, and it is no exaggeration
because it truly is such, both naturally and culturally. Embark on a leisurely
road journey through the Thar Desert and to the palaces and forts in the
state. While experiencing an exotic stay by a reservoir in the desert, you can
try your luck with spotting the leopards living in the area.
BEST SEASON
Region and terrain are two of the most important factors that influence the
weather of India. To visit Rajasthan, winter is the appropriate time, and
places like Leh and the north-eastern states are best experienced from May
till September.
"The soul of India lies in its villages" these words by Mahatma
Gandhi hold true for various reasons. In India, villages are
symbolic of the earthy, traditional, rustic and relaxed way of life.
Predominantly inhabited by farmers, where people live off the
land and are in tune with nature and their local environment. In
comparison to the cities, village life is slow paced, calm and
peaceful, cuisine more authentic, organic, music, dance and
folklore are modes of relaxation.
Indian Legends helps you discover the unexplored and
untouched rural beauty of India and experience the tradition
and lifestyle of villagers, indulge in local delicacies, witness
local traditions and rituals and learn about the region’s folk art,
crafts, legends, music and dance. The destinations are located
in the rural parts of India and have been reviewed and
hand-picked by Indian Legends team for the value it offers in
terms of natural beauty, safety, accessibility, cultural activities

Ayurveda is an ancient medical science which follows a natural
healing system and has been practiced in India for over 5,000
years. Ayurveda is based on the principal of balancing the
three elemental substances, the doshas (called Vata, Pitta and
Kapha), and states that a balance of the doshas results in
health, while imbalance results in disease. Ayurvedic science of
healing involves use of natural ingredients like honey, oils,
herbs, roots, plant extracts etc.
Kerala, being the birth place of Ayurveda, is still the most
sought after destination for Ayurvedic treatments both by
Indians as well as foreign tourists. Both Kerala and the upper
regions of Northern India, with its equitable weather, natural
abundance of forests with medicinal vegetation are best suited
for Ayurvedic treatments and hence are home to several
Ayurvedic resorts.
Ayurvedic medicine is particularly effective for metabolic, stress
related, and chronic conditions and with people becoming
increasing aware of the need to “distress” and “detox’ from the
fast paced life. Given the fact that Ayurveda has been
advertised as alternative medicine in the Western world,
Ayurvedic resorts In India are quite sought after for relaxation
and rejuvenation by people world over.

The modern day tourists are no longer satisfied with the “run of the mill”
sightseeing and stay options. Paucity of time and the internet boom have
made tourists more aware and demanding. As a result, destinations are
being repackaged to add the “extra” zing to it. Customised tours and
activities are now a major attraction for tourists in many cities such as
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Varanasi, Lucknow etc. These are no random
activities and strolls around the city but are immaculately planned
around specific themes, ranging from spices to history to books to

on account of being a laid back destination with untouched beaches. To put
it in other words, it’s a less commercialized, less crowded and more serene
beach destination than the other popular ones like Goa.
SPITI, HIMACHAL PRADESH
Spiti Valley is a desert mountain valley located about 3,800 mts above
mean sea level in the Himalaya mountains. Spiti’s terrain is more
treacherous, remote and rugged than Ladakh and hence considered a
haven for adrenalin driven travelers as well as soul searching tourists.
The Spiti – Kinnaur loop makes for one of Asia's greatest road trips.
CHOPTA, UTTARAKHAND
Chopta conjures up an image of idyllic, non-commercialized, laid back hill
station where the only thing tourists can indulge in is to unwind, relax or as
they say “take a break”. For others, however, there are options for trekking,
hiking and other adventure sports. Blessed with a wide array of flora and
fauna, it also offers the perfect place for picnics.
VALLEY OF FLOWERS, UTTARAKHAND
A national park located in the Himalayas, the valley of flowers is home to a
rich diversity of both flora and fauna. Its landscape along with the natural
diversity makes it hugely popular with mountaineers, botanists, and
adventure tourists alike. Bordered by snowy mountain ranges and icy
glaciers, a vast expanse of flowery meadows interspaced with cascading
waterfalls is how the valley can be best described in words.18 19
