The Centre for Lasers and Photonics (CELP) is a unique one-of-its-kind unit in theIndian academic environment since it is a truly inter-disciplinary centre for post-graduate education and research. Photonics Science and EngineeringProgramme (PSEP) of the Centre offers degrees of Ph.D, M.Tech and M.S(Research). While the course-work emphasizes on Theory and Experiments, italso provides access to students to state-of-the-art research infrastructure andcomputational facilities. The list of courses and laboratory experiments in thecurriculum will make this clear.PSEP has specialist faculty members drawn from multiple science andengineering departments such as Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering,Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. Thus, the span of research topicsranges from Optical communications to Optical Imaging and Ranging. Tomention a few of the topics of recent masters’ theses, one would find workrelated to Biophotonics, Quantum Communication, Digital Holography,Nanophotonics and Fiber Lasers, all of which are of national and internationalrelevance. The students are well-equipped in their theoretical understanding of topicsrelated to Optics and Photonics, as well as Lasers and Detectors. Most of themwork on experimental topics for their thesis while a few have very highcomputational abilities. They are also exposed to recent and emerging topics inPhotonics through our in-house seminars by experts and their own institute-supported conference visits. It is my fervent belief that our students will become leaders in their chosenprofessions due to their hard work and the strong foundation provided by IITKanpur during their studies.

The Centre for Lasers and Photonics (CELP) combines cutting-edgetechnology from engineering and theoretical advances in science tocreate new horizons in the ever growing field of Photonics.

The interdisciplinary centre collaborates with six differentdepartments (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering, and Chemistry)and pursues research in the fields of Optical Communication, LaserFabrication, Semiconductor Photonic Devices, Optical Imaging,Ultrafast Optics, Quantum Computing, Material Processing,LiDAR/Laser Scanning, Bio-photonics and related fields. The Centrehas research infrastructure worth several crores funded by agenciessuch as DST, DRDO, CSIR and MHRD.

Our alumni are working in prestigious organizations such as TexasInstruments, GE, Mathworks, Tata Steel, Sasken, Niksun, DRDO andBEL to name a few.
